Physical Therapy at the Medtronic 2013 Twin Cities Marathon By Deb Roberts, PT, APTA member since 1975 A total of 22 physical therapists, student physical therapists and student physical therapist assistants provided physical therapy services at the 2013 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon on October 6. The record number of physical therapy volunteers made it possible to staff the finish line medical tent and numerous on-course aid stations. Working on the course is different from working in the medical tent at the finish. Course volunteers take care of runners without the relative luxuries of shelter, cots, and heat. This year s rainy and cool weather put the on-course physical therapy volunteers to the test, forcing them to use both their problem solving and treatment skills. While the physical therapists and students at the finish line managed muscle spasms and kept runners walking to avoid them, those on the course were helping participants return to the race and finish the marathon. Physical therapists are an important part of the marathon medical team. Working at the marathon is a great opportunity to integrate the profession into the acute care medical team and for students to get hands-on experience in race-related medical problems. It also gives physical therapy additional exposure to both the public and other medical professionals, in line with the guiding principle of collaboration. In addition, volunteering at a marathon or other endurance event supports the outward perspective of the APTA s new vision statement: "Transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience."

Evidence in Action Online Evidence Based Practice Resources By Jena Ogston, PT (APTA Member Since 1994) and Reviewed by the MNPTA Research Committee The Research Committee would like to share a few highly recommended filtered online evidence based practice resources. The term filtered as applied here is synonymous with secondary resources, meaning that the information has been evaluated and provides a summary of findings. Time is one of the top limitations for integrating evidence into practice. Filtered resources may assist in overcoming time limitations as other organizations have completed the search process for you! Rehabilitation Measures Database (rehabmeasures.org): This online resource lists over 140 outcome measures related to physical therapy. It was developed for clinicians to identify reliable and valid outcome measures. Statistics and references are included for nearly every listed assessment tool. National Guideline Clearinghouse (guideline.gov): This website provides information on clinical practice guidelines in healthcare. The NGC is supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, an initiative of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). PT now (.ptnow.org/efault.aspx): This is a recently developed website for physical therapy practitioners to efficiently access numerous forms of evidence based practice information. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (cochrane.org): This database is a collection of systematic reviews conducted by an international group on a wide variety of healthcare topics. Save The Date: Legislative Day Scheduled for February 27th Be sure to mark your calendars: the Minnesota Physical Therapy Association's annual Legislative Day has been scheduled for February 27th, Our legislative team is hard at work shaping our 2014 agenda. We will continue to protect our scope of practice, advocate for access to physical therapy, work toward fair reimbursement policies and position physical therapy in the health care reform discussion in the next legislative session. However, we cannot do this without your support. Please save the date and join us for Legislative Day on February 27th. We are excited to announce that once again this year, everyone is invited to join us at Legislative Day free of charge. Registration information will be provided in mid-january.
Minnesota PT Program Accepts 2013 Challenge to Raise Funds for Research By Rachel Sand, SPT and Allison Czaplewski, SPT The annual Marquette Challenge is a grassroots fundraising effort coordinated and carried out by physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students across the country. The Challenge supports the Foundation for Physical Therapy s mission of providing doctoral scholarships, fellowships, and grants for scientifically-based and clinically-relevant physical therapy research. Since its inception in 1989, 170 different schools have participated in the Challenge, and PT and PTA students have raised a grand total of $2,530,950. This year marked the 25th anniversary of the Challenge. A total of 80 schools participated in the Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge and raised $222,008 in support of the Foundation for Physical Therapy. This year s first place winner was the University of Miami, whose students raised $28,807. The University of Pittsburgh won second place, raising $28,450. New York University students raised $16,275 and earned the third place title. The Foundation wishes to thank and congratulate the students of the Mayo School of Health Sciences for earning an Honorable Mention for raising more than $3,000. Laura Prosser, PT, MPT, PhD, a research scientist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, is the recipient of the 2012 Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge Research Grant. Her 1-year project, "Motor Outcomes and Neural Correlates of Asymmetrical Gait Training in Children with Acquired Hemiplegia," will study the motor and neural responses to an asymmetrical gait-training program in children with chronic hemiplegia from prior stroke. Prosser received her master's in physical therapy from the University of Scranton, and her PhD in physical therapy from Temple University, with a specialization in neuroscience and biomechanics. The Challenge also funded a PODS I Scholarship in 2013, which went to Kendra Cherry, PT, DPT of Washington University in St. Louis. The University of Miami will serve as co-host for the upcoming Miami-Marquette Challenge. Miami and Marquette students are launching the "Get on the List" campaign for the Challenge. PT and PTA schools can Get on the List by donating any amount of money to the annual Challenge effort. The Challenge organizers hope that all PT and PTA programs in the state of Minnesota will "Get on the List" for and support the Foundation for Physical Therapy and physical therapy research. To learn how you can support the Challenge, please visit the Foundation s Web site at call the Foundation at 800/ , or Marquette student coordinators at [email protected]. Contributions for the Miami- Marquette Challenge should be submitted by April 21, 2014.

I am currently a 2nd year PTA student at Anoka-Ramsey Community College (ARCC). In mid- November I will start a clinical internship at Hopkins Health & Wellness. What are some special interests/special accomplishments in your career? I graduated from Saint Cloud State University in 2010 where I studied Psychology and Biology. For my senior capstone I interned/volunteered at Courage Center Golden Valley, analyzing the behavioral aspects of patients in the Physical Therapy, Aquatic Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy Departments, as well as Adapted Yoga classes. Through working with several patients recovering from brain and spinal cord injuries, I developed a special interest in neurological rehabilitation and was inspired to pursue a career in physical therapy.
This year I am especially excited to be assisting two of my classmates, Julianne Beisswenger and Anna Frahm-Cox, in establishing a Physical Therapy Club at ARCC How are you involved with MNPTA? Thanks to my outstanding instructors at ARCC, I developed a seemingly unquenchable enthusiasm for physical therapy in my first year as a PTA student and sought to get involved as much as possible. It was brought to my attention that there was a group of students with a similar passion for physical therapy that met on a regular basis: the MNPTA Student Special Interest Group. This year, I am excited to be serving as the Public Relations Coordinator. As the Public Relations Coordinator, I am responsible for creating and distributing marketing materials for SSIG events, managing the SSIG Facebook page, and promoting student involvement in the MNPTA and APTA. Being involved in the MNPTA has also opened the door to several volunteer opportunities such as promoting concussion awareness at the MNPTA State Fair booth and working in the finish-line medical tent at the Twin Cities Marathon. Why are you a member of APTA? I believe it is the therapist s responsibility to provide the highest quality and most beneficial treatment available. The APTA is an excellent resource for keeping up with the latest research and therapeutic strategies and enhancing treatment effectiveness. What other hobbies or special interests do you have? Since graduating from SCSU, I have become a certified personal trainer with advanced specializations in corrective exercise and fitness nutrition. As someone who has a difficult time sitting still, I enjoy channeling my extra energy into a positive outlet. Through my extracurricular education in personal training I developed a 5 year plan ultimately resulting in completing an Ironman Triathlon in Gradually increasing the distance each year, this past summer I completed my first Half-Ironman Triathlon. I am looking forward to improving on my time in a second Half-Ironman in the summer of 2014 and running the Twin Cities Marathon that fall. December Student Spotlight: Julianne Beisswenger, SPTA What is your current setting? I am currently a 2nd year PTA student at Anoka Ramsey Community College. This past summer I took part in my first clinical experience at Rivers Edge Hospital in St. Peter, MN. I am currently on my second clinical with Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute of St. Croix in Stillwater, MN. The focus of my current clinical is with pediatrics and neuro and I feel very fortunate to be able to experience such variety in this setting. What are some special interests/special accomplishments in you career? I am keeping an open mind until I graduate regarding where my focus will be. After my first clinical I grew quite fond of geriatrics and am looking forward to more experience in this area on my third clinical. I have really been enjoying the pediatrics and neuro field. The young ones have been so inspiring to work with and have brought on a new love for physical therapy. I have been honored
with being the Class President for the ARCC PTA Program class of 2014 and with that have been able to establish a PTA Club open to all students at ARCC. Why are you a member of APTA? How are you involved with MNPTA? As a first year PTA student we were informed of different outlets for our interests in physical therapy and the Student Special interest Group really caught my attention. It is great to meet and work with so many other students who share your passion for this field. I am the PTA Liaison for the SSIG Executive Board and am excited to not only take part in this great group, but share and promote with others. Some tasks I have enjoyed doing while in this position have been organizing baskets for the silent auction for spring and fall conference, planning volunteer events, recruiting speakers for meetings or our upcoming conclave, and encouraging classmates to take part in all of these wonderful activities and opportunities. I feel it is important to be a member of the APTA because our field is constantly changing and what better way to stay informed than with the APTA. As a PTA, it is my responsibility to keep up with the latest news in the physical therapy world. Being a member with the APTA there are so many opportunities to further your knowledge, get involved, and advocate for your field. Since becoming a member last year I have truly benefited from the APTA and it has helped me to grow into a better new professional. What other hobbies or special interests do you have? During my time away from the class and books I enjoy dance, colorguard, traveling, scrapbooking, and especially spending time with my adorable 2 year old niece and my best friend s new little girl. This winter I am hoping to make some time for snow tubing, snowshoeing, and to learn how to snowboard!
