4 Safety in Road-Building areas! The safety of road work areas and road users! Today s focus is on how road equipment are approved, why is it important to use approved products, why is it so important that the products are used properly

10 Temporary safety barriers! Others consideration: Adequate space is required for heavy vehicles working width must be related to the available space Consideration for access points at the work zone Exposed barrier ends must be protected The installation manual

11 Truck Mounted Attenuator

12 Premise! A European Standard for Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) is under development An initial meeting was held on the 10 th November 2011 Topics discussed included: The name of the items being covered by the standard Methods of working Currently existing and published National requirements Scope of the work Time scales! 15 countries were represented test houses, manufacturers, researchers and National Authorities

13 Output! There might be: Small and simple TMA s for urban areas, Effective TMA s for the rural roads, High containments for higher speeds roads and heavy trucks! General agreement on: Concentrate on reducing the risk for both road users and workers Have the possibility to connect them to different structures/vehicles try to use the already existing standard

14 NCHRP report 350 and M.A.S.H! Test series 3-50, 51, 52, C kg 2270 P kg! Shadow vehicles 10 tons

15 Test with shadow vehicle! Shadow vehicles are moving trucks with attenuators spaced a short distance from a moving operation giving physical protection to workers from traffic approaching from rear

16 Roll-Ahead Distance! TMA position:upstream from the obstacle/road-workers at a distance Examples of Spacing for Support Vehicle Speed limit Calculation Roll-Ahead Distance 50 km/h (50 / 2) + 10 = meters 70 km/h (70 / 2) + 10 = meters 90 km/h (90 / 2) + 10 = meters 100 km/h (100 / 2) + 10 = meters! When TMA is located on roads with low friction (snow or ice) the roll-ahead distance must be increased of 15 meters.! Follow the requirements within HB51 and 62

17 Our experience! Norwegian experience is based on the Swedish one! TMA s has been used in Sweden since the beginning of the 1990-ies and has grown to about 500 units until today.! There has been only few accidents with high injuries and fatalities related to TMA s.! The two mandatory NCHRPR 350 crash tests 3-50 and 3-51 plus at least one of the two (in US optional) tests 3-52 or 3-53! Exception can be given to the vehicles used in the American standard if the cars tested are representative of the means of transport on the European roads.

18 Alternatives! alternative TMA carriers such as: Articulated front-end loaders, Tractors, Rigid frame. has been accepted!! This can resulted in a safer work environment and a cost effective way of work!

TMA Installation and removal costs make safety barriers less cost-effective for shorter term installation Safety barriers are less cost effective when used throughout work zones where work activities are present at a specific location for relativity short periods of time High risk for workers and road users to be exposed to hazard during installation and removal It is important that the safety equipment is used correctly because incorrect use can result in major, unforeseen consequences with respect to the safety of both workers and road users.
