1 Doctoral Program in Social Sciences and Statistics Overview The University of Naples Federico II, was established in 1224 through an Imperial Charter of Frederick II Hohenstaufen, King of Sicily and Holy Roman Emperor. It is the first publicly funded University in Europe. The Doctoral Program in Social Sciences and Statistics is among the first in Italy besides being the very first in Southern Italy to provide graduate students with advanced education in social and statistical sciences with a specific emphasis on qualitative and quantitative research methods and with an international perspective on the side of theoretical debates. The PH doctors in statistical and social science is able to undertake an international academic career, to take on responsibilities, draw and coordinate research and surveys in the social and economic field, thanks to the competencies acquired in the data analysis of social science, statistics, social history, demography, marketing and public policies evaluation. It is a three-years program offered by the Department of Social Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II. The program aims to produce high-quality researchers with strong analytical skills and international exposure. Students are trained for positions in academia as well as in research centers, international organizations, think tanks, NGOs, public institutions and business enterprises. The PH Doctor will have a strong International opening at the end of his\her path, thanks to the well-developed work and research relationships of the members of the board with foreign universities; through research networks they ensure bilateral cultural exchanges both for the teachers and the PHD students. The program combines a common set of core courses (including both review and advanced courses in statistics, sociology, social history, anthropology, social psychology, social research methods) with elective courses, seminars and dissertation work. The diversity of research areas covered by the member of the board (coming mainly from the Department of Social Sciences and the Department of Economics and Statistical Sciences) allows students to structure their coursework and write their doctoral dissertation in several different areas of social and statistical sciences, with a focus on research quantitative and qualitative methodologies and on theoretical international trends. Admission Up to seven students are admitted to the program each year. Three-year scholarships are available for five of the admitted students. Admission takes into account excellence in previous Master programs or equivalent. The candidate are expected to have a strong interest in Social Sciences, to be fluent in written and spoken English and to have two recommendation letters (language certifications are not required but, if they are submitted, they will be considered by the admission committee together with other credentials).

2 Course organization The PHD course is divided in two paths over three years for a total of 180 ECTS; the first year is the same for both paths, in order to create common basis for all the students: a) analysis of socio-cultural transformations b) statistical methods for social research. The PHD program is divided in two specialization paths, with a common education path in the first year, and partially differentiated the second year. Third year The third year is mainly spent in researching for the thesis. Every year, the PHD program provides a seminar where students discuss their own research projects and their thesis as well with the board of teachers. Classes are held at the headquarters of the Dept. of Economic and statistical science and of the Dept. of Social Science. By the end of each year, students must prepare a report of all activities and research progress and present their research activity in a seminar. On the basis of this report, the program s Faculty Committee decides at the end of each academic year (in October, for programs starting in November; in February, for programs starting in March) on the admission to the subsequent year and, in the third year, to the final examination. During the three years, all students will have to perform some coursework and pass the corresponding exams Organization of the doctoral program First year (60 ECTS): in the first year students are required to take core courses (25 ECTS) aimed at improving and integrating participants competencies in the sociological and statistical fields and to encourage the establishment of a common research language, to actively participate in the seminars (20 ECTS). By the end of the first year, students define their research plan (10 ECTS) for the final dissertation and choose a research supervisor with the help of the PhD Director (all students are encouraged to start their research as soon as possible). From then on, they work in close contact with their supervisor on the elaboration of the PhD proposal. Students must attend their fellow students presentation during the Annual Doctoral Seminar Second year (60 ECTS): Over the second year, the teaching activity differentiates according to the specializations, even keeping a common background; at the same time, students will start the research for the Thesis. More in detail students are required to take further advanced core courses (15 ECTS), actively participate in the seminars and workshops organized (10 ECTS) and to produce at least one chapter of the doctorate thesis, table of contents and overall bibliography (30 ECTS). Pdh students may spend all or part of the second year abroad, attending elective courses relevant to their research. The program s board will attend and offer comments and suggestions. The Phd Board may select other department members or external academics for the evaluation of the student s progress, together with the advisor. A

3 satisfactory presentation and a positive evaluation of research progress is a necessary condition for admission to the third year. Third year (60 ECTS): during the third year students are required to complete their dissertation. The admission to the final Thesis Defense is conditional on a positive assessment of a presentation of the entire thesis by the supervisor and the PhD Board that assesses the scientific results achieved, originality, the degree of in-depth analysis, methodology and education profile of each candidate. If the doctoral dissertation is promising but requires further work or if there are other serious reasons, the Examination Committee may authorize postponing the dissertation submission, with no extension of the fellowship ECTS per year I year II year III year All years Core course Seminars/ workshops Research activities Totale International experience requirements and cooperation During the three years program, every student must have at least one direct international experience, including visits for research purposes in non-italian research institutions (a period of at least three months being required), attending an international school or an international conference, and presenting personal research results. The PhD director discusses with the student and with the Faculty committee whether his/her teaching activities are compatible with the doctoral program. The PhD program currently has agreements with national and international partners. Such agreements are specifically outlined to promote and support research cooperation and to facilitate student mobility. It entertains stable research collaborations with international leading universities and research institutions. She is o annual visiting professor at the ASRO-Faculty of Engineering, within the Erasmus Bilateral Agreement between the KU Leuven and the University of Naples Federico II (the course European Module in the Spatial Development Planning has been awarded by theaesop Excellence in Teaching Prize 2011; Her researches havefocused on urban poverty and immigration in Southern Italy in an European comparative perspective. Other domains of investigation are social policies evaluation and gender issues.
