1 DIVISION OF ENGINEERING AND PHYSICS EGR201 Professionalism and Ethics Course Outline Spring 2010 GENERAL INFORMATION Instructor: Vijay K. Arora, Ph. D., Professor of Electrical Engineering and IEEE-EDS Distinguished Lecturer Contact Info SLC 237, Phone , Lectures There are no lectures for this course. Most work will be conducted online. Office Hours MW 09:00-11:30 AM or by appointment. Textbook FE Review Manual (FERM2), 2nd Edition Michael R. Lindeburg, PE, Exam Cafe gives you the ability to take tests on FE exam topics. The exams will be set up for an on-payment exam testing little later using the following website CATALOG DESCRIPTION ( ) EGR 201. Professionalism and Ethics One credit Responsibility of an engineer as a professional; ethics in science and engineering; role of professional societies; recent trends in technological innovations; career planning. Review of professional exam. Prerequisite: Junior engineering standing. After the 2009 ABET review of Wilkes Engineering programs, ABET asked for evidence of registering as a professional engineer in passing the professional engineering exam. That is why the course contents is being changed where students must demonstrate that they have passed the FE/EIT exam or have taken practice tests as a way to assess the learning outcomes on fundamental engineering courses. GLOBAL ATTRIBUTE OUTCOMES The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredits Wilkes engineering programs. ABET has identified general ability outcomes in Engineering Criteria 2000 (EC2000) for all graduating engineers, regardless of their discipline or university. These a-k attributes, as these are popularly known, are listed in the Global Attribute Outcomes Assessment Form attached. We need to assess that the learning objectives are in concert with Wilkes University mission, the objectives of the engineering programs, and professional-practice attributes (including those required to be business savvy) contained in EC2000. The difference between engineering and business is that engineering executes and business reports. Unless we are good in communicating the value of engineering and science to those making decisions, we will not be successful in our profession and personal life. The primary goal of this survey is to assure that the students are able to perform well in the profession beyond college. You will assess your ability attributes as a result of taking this course. Another instrument that will be used is the Student Response Survey (SRS) that will measure the scholarship of learning and teaching. The primary goal is to assess that the students have learned well the material contained in the syllabus. Both of these surveys, along with assessing the contributions as a team player, will be conducted at the end of the semester. COURSE OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES EGR201: Course Outline/ page 1

2 Given that you have satisfied the prerequisites above (junior standing), as a result of taking this course, you should be able to: 1. Develop comprehension of professional and ethical responsibilities of engineers, including code of ethics of professional societies. (f) 2. Use computer tools to prepare weekly reports to be uploaded on WebCT. (k) 3. Communicate outcomes in project reports and comprehension on contemporary issues. (h) 4. Demonstrate competency to be able to pass FE/EIT exam. (b, d, f, g) 5. Evaluate learning outcomes and pose questions in periodic surveys (a-k) The letters in parenthesis refer to ABET s a-k ability attribute outcomes. GRADING PROCEDURE The grading of the course is based on two major components, weekly reports and EIT/FE sample exams: Weekly reports on Professionalism and Ehtical issues 50 EIT/FE Review 50 Total 100 In fairness to all, no late homework will be accepted. The following are guaranteed grades if your accumulated percentage over the semester falls into the following brackets: A (85 and above), B + (80-84%), B (75-79%), C + (70-74%), C(65-69%), D + (60-64%), D(55-59%). For those exhibiting superior performance in projects, homework, and classroom participation, up to 5 bonus points may be considered especially if the exam average falls below 70%. The course runs on an honor system that expects each student to put an honest effort in meeting the learning objectives. The purpose of the homework and project assignments is to provide a working environment for you to enhance your skills in analyzing, synthesizing, using correct syntax, computing and networking on problem/project-based learning (PBL). It is meant to create an interactive environment for sharing ideas and experiences, to work together as a team, brainstorm, and fill gaps that may be left in the classroom. General Remarks I would like to make the following suggestions to improve the quality of course offering as it relates to the challenges of personal and professional life.
