2 Who s using tobacco among students? In Ohio, 26.1% of high school students reported being current tobacco users (Ohio YTS, 2010) In the U.S., 30.5% of young adults (18-24) are current smokers (BRFSS, 2011) Almost 40% of college-aged smokers either began smoking (11%) or become a regular smoker after starting college (28%) (Wechsler, et. al., 1998)

3 Cost of Tobacco in Ohio A per pack a day smoker will spend: $6.25 per day $ per month $2,325 per year Smoking-caused costs $9.19 per pack $4.37 billion in annual healthcare expenditures

4 Critical Messages Tobacco is leading cause of preventable and premature death In US, 3,800 youth under age 18 smoke 1 st cigarette each day 1 in 4 high school seniors, 1 in 3 young adults under age 26 smoke 100% of adults who smoke started before age 26

5 Critical Messages Tobacco use among youth = critical issue Institutions of learning must lead environmental change

6 The Importance of Passing 100% TF Policies Changes the social norm of the college/ university campus Reduces health care costs Reduces campus clean up costs Eliminates risk of exposure

7 What s the trend? 281 colleges/universities in US are Tobacco Free 711 colleges/universities are 100% Smoke free with NO EXEMPTIONS 3 states and 1 territory require all colleges/universities to be 100% SF

15 Return on Investment to 2.88 The best data on the state s ROI comes from the American Lung Association, which shows that for every dollar spent on smoking cessation treatment, $1.26 will be saved. America s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) illustrates the employer s perspective in their ROI calculator, and shows a positive result due to productivity gains in year one of a cessation program. AHIP s ROI calculator estimates the ROI of evidencebased cessation interventions over one to five years, with a positive result within three years.
