1 PUBLIC HEALTH SEATTLE & KING COUNTY ABOUT THE DIVISION The mission of the Prevention Division of Public Health Seattle & King County is to provide King County s disease surveillance and investigation, health promotion, death investigation, and related regulatory services to County residents to prevent disease and injury, improve the residents quality of life, and reduce disparities in health status. Programs within the division include the following: vention, Services, and Control, trol, The Division is funded largely by dedicated funding sources: 72% of the Division s services are funded by dedicated resources such as grants and fees for service. The remaining 28% is core public health funding from King County and the state of Washington. The Division has an annual budget of over $43 million and includes 170 FTEs. operating divisions in the department, along with Environmental Health Services, Jail Health Services, Community Health Services, and Emergency - Cross-Cutting Public Health Services. The entire department has a budget of $319 million and 1,400 FTEs. While public health has made great strides in combating infectious diseases, a new set of preventable Washingtonians are living longer, they are still dying early from preventable causes, often following years of preventable illness and disability. Chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease, resulting from underlying causes such as tobacco use, poor nutrition, and physical inactivity, continue to cause long-term illnesses and disability and emerging as a leading case of disability and death. Health will improve from place rather than treating them after they have occurred. This will require a public health system that assists individuals in adopting healthy behaviors, in encouraging these lifestyles, and assists policy makers in implementing policies based on the best available evidence to change the conditions in which we all live. to address these actual causes of morbidity and mortality is the lack of reliable core funding support for chronic disease and injury prevention.
