Welcome session for Economics & Business Students Angel Gil (Exchange Coordinator) Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences Office hours: Thursday 12 13:30 or by appointment Office (Jaume I building) incoming.facecon@upf.edu UPF September 19, 2015 Angel Gil (UPF) Welcome session for Economics & Business Students September 19, / 12
Index 1 Introduction 2 Academic calendar 3 Grades Angel Gil (UPF) Welcome session for Economics & Business Students September 19, / 12
Introduction Hints 1 Forward your UPF (@...upf.edu) which is a Google account to the one that you check more often. 2 Read carefully the course plans ( Pla docent ). You can find them (soon) in Aula Global. 3 In case of any doubt ask the instructor or your Spanish/Catalan classmates. 4 Each group has a representative for the students ( delegado/delegada ). You can contact him or her. 5 Should you have any problems regarding academic issues you can contact me. 6 Other subjects (add&drop and enrolment, issues regarding your stay at UPF, certification requirements of your home university) please go to OMA. 7 Links at the end of the presentation. Angel Gil (UPF) Welcome session for Economics & Business Students September 19, / 12
Academic calendar Courses 1 Course codes 2015-YYxxx-T1 Name is the group (section) 1 of the course unit 2015-YYxxx (T for Teoria ) with name NAME YYxxx-S203 which is the seminar number 3 of the group (section) number 2 in course unit YYxxx) (S for Seminar ). 2 Check times and classrooms in our Schedule at the Intranet of the Faculty. Find them at School Web Site Time tables (by Degree (Cerca per estudi) or by Course Module (Cerca per assignatura) where Teoria= Lectures and Seminari= Seminar ). Angel Gil (UPF) Welcome session for Economics & Business Students September 19, / 12
Academic calendar Seminars 1 Seminars usually start on the 2nd or 3rd week of the term, beginning October (or January or April)... (ask instructor and/or classmates). You have to attend only one seminar per course and week. 2 For the first term, seminars are assigned randomly. Assignation to be published in Campus Global soon. 3 Courses added in the add&drop: you have to enrol by yourselves for the seminars after you ve been added. Angel Gil (UPF) Welcome session for Economics & Business Students September 19, / 12
Academic calendar Exams Academic Calendar 1 First term: December 9th-22nd 2 Second term: March 29th April 8th (after Easter) 3 Third term: June 18th 29th. 4 Check rooms by code in exam calendar Available end of September. 5 Pass=5; Excellent=10. Your university is responsible for the translation of the UPF grades to your system. 6 If overlapping contact instructors. 7 Grades published in Campus Global and also in your phones. 8 During the first week after exams you can complain (each instructor publishes date and place for the revision of the exam). 9 Transcripts sent by OMA to your university directly. Angel Gil (UPF) Welcome session for Economics & Business Students September 19, / 12
Academic calendar Exams and resits 1 If you fail, there will be resits (or retakes or recoveries) on First Term: 6/2/15 or 13/2/15 (Saturdays!) Second term: 7/5/15 or 14/5/15 (Saturdays!) Third term: 6/7/15 22/7/15 July. 2 Retakes only for those who fail the first exam; you have to attend the exam to be allowed to take the resit. Some other restrictions may apply. 3 No September exams. Please don t fail. 4 We do not send exams abroad. 5 If you have problems during the term (absences, illness... ) tell the instructor soon; do not wait to know the grades to inform us. Angel Gil (UPF) Welcome session for Economics & Business Students September 19, / 12
Grades Calculation 1 Check in plan docent how you will be assessed. Usually assessment takes into account Attendance to seminars (and sometimes to the lectures). In some courses it may be compulsory (to lectures, seminars or both). Participation. Midterm exams (announced by the teacher and/or in Aula Global ). Essays Work in group... Final exam 2 Sometimes a minimum grade is required in some item to pass the course (e.g., a minimum of 4 in the final exam). Check the Pla docent. Angel Gil (UPF) Welcome session for Economics & Business Students September 19, / 12
Grades Exams 1 Be careful with multiple choice quizzes. Sometimes we use special forms to be automatically graded. Wrong answers (nearly-)always give negative points (ask the instructor in case of doubt). 2 If you are taking a course in Catalan or Spanish ask the instructor well before the date if there s an English version and/or you can bring a Dictionary. 3 If you don t understand some word or sentence during the exam, ask the invigilator. Angel Gil (UPF) Welcome session for Economics & Business Students September 19, / 12
