2 what is grid? a non-printed system of horizontal and vertical lines that divides the page and helps the designer align elements consistently. the skeleton of the design. a two-dimensional structure made up of a series of intersecting vertical and horizontal axes used to structure content. the grid serves as an armature on which a designer can organize text and images in a rational, easy to absorb manner.

[grids are] designed in response to the internal pressures of content (text, image, data) and the outer edge of frame (page, screen, window), an effective grid is not a rigid formula but a flexible and resilient structure, a skeleton that moves in concert with the muscular mass of information. note the metaphors used: not a formula; flexible skeleton moving in concert with muscle ~ellen lupton
