4 World Language in Spain s Educational System English (world Language) mandatory: from Early Childhood thru grade 12 German, French, Italian, Portuguese: electives 7-12 Regional Departments of Education: Bilingual Programs from 1st grade to 12th grade, where English (French or German ) Spanish and cooficial languages are the content languages of instruction

5 BILINGUAL PROGRAMS RATIONALE Students are learning the language through content English Language Arts class is part of the students program CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning): both Spanish and English are languages of instruction. AICOLE or AICLE Objective: learn the contents of the different disciplines and become literate through the two languages

6 STUDENTS IN CLIL PROGRAMS IN SPAIN Total Elementary Secondary Total ,205 English ,591 French ,742 German , % of students in Elementary education participate in an educational experience that uses a foreign language as a language of instruction, with 11.6% in those who do learning programs integrated content and language, 2.5% in other experiences and the remaining 1.1 % are enrolled in foreign institutions. In Secondary Education, 10% of the students are participating in these experiences, and 7.0% which makes learning programs integrated content and language

8 Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) A common model and framework for language teaching, learning and assessment in Europe. The CEFR describes language ability on a scale of levels from A1 for beginners up to C2 for those who have mastered a language. It is simple to identify the level of competence by easily comparing qualifications and how they relate to exams they already know in their own country.

12 El programa de profesores visitantes de España comenzó en Nuevo Méjico en Francisco Vázquez de Coronado trajo en su expedición de estas tierras a los dos primeros maestros de España. Fray Juan de Padilla y Fray Luis de Escalona no necesitaron ningún tipo de visado ni de licencia de maestro para comenzar a enseñar a los habitantes de Nuevo Méjico. Tal vez por esto, decidieron quedarse cuando Coronado decidió volver a Nueva España (Méjico). El primero se quedó en Quivera y el segundo en Cicuye. Guía de Nuevo Méjico. 18 US and Canada Language and Culture Assistants in Spain It provides recent graduates with an opportunity to visit Spain, improve their Spanish language and have an intercultural experience. Candidates must have completed a Bachelor s degree, or be in their junior/senior year Candidates work for most of our 17 Autonomous Regions Working conditions: hours per week ( monthly grant)

20 Spanish Language and Culture Assistants in the United States Spanish young graduates are placed in Schools or Spanish Resource Centers at Universities in the United States and Canada in order to support the teaching of Spanish.

25 SCHOOL OF THE YEAR Award for Academic Excellence in Spanish Competition open to K-12 public, private and charter schools in the US that: Have implemented language programs following CLIC methodology. Use Spanish in the program (25% HS, 35% MS, 50% ES). The project counts on the sponsorship of: Santander Shareholders, Fundación Comillas, Instituto Cervantes and groups Anaya and Santillana.

27 Summer Courses in Spain for Teachers and Administrators The Summer Courses Program is offered in 11 Spanish Universities: Spanish Language and Culture Spanish as a Foreign Language and special courses Masters in Spanish Language and Culture. Duration: Courses are 3 weeks in July to August. Graduate credits are awarded by Universities in the U.S
