3 MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING DIVERSE LEARNERS DUAL ENDORSEMENTS IN CLD AND SPECIAL EDUCATION Since its founding as the State Normal School in 1889, the University of Northern Colorado has earned a reputation for educating highly-qualified teachers. In keeping step with the needs of an ever-changing society, UNC s commitment to teacher education has evolved over the years, becoming increasingly diverse and inclusive. Mission Statement The mission of the Teaching Diverse Learners Master of Arts is to provide preparation and qualification to licensed teachers interested in strengthening their ability to teach diverse learners. This program includes not only a master s degree but also, after meeting the endorsement requirement, dual endorsements in both Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education and Special Education Generalist. As designed, the program will facilitate the development of educators who are able to implement professional standards and advocate for children and youth who are diverse learners. Graduate students who complete this program will acquire dispositions and skills needed to work with an increasingly diverse population. Extended Campus program Overall Structure of the Program 33 credit hours, cohort format, completed over 5 semesters A combination of 18 credits in discipline-dedicated courses, 9 credits in discipline-blended courses, and 6 credits in a blended field experience course leading to the Colorado state minimum requirement of 24 credits/endorsement is realized. Course completion pattern by semester: Fall, 2 courses (6 credits); Spring, 2 courses (6 credits); Summer, 2 courses (6 credits); Fall, 2 courses (6 credits); and Spring, 2 courses (9 credits). 3

4 Teaching Diverse Learners MA Program Courses TDL/Dual students are required to complete the following courses during the program. Courses are offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Students take 6 credits for 4 semesters and 9 credits the final semester. (Courses are not in order.) EDS Basic Principles of CLD & SPED Education (3) This course is designed to provide the political, historical and legal foundations of special education and the education of culturally and linguistically diverse populations, and addresses the educational implications for the teacher and children with unique learning needs. EDS Assessment: Special Education and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (3) Students gain knowledge and skills to select, adapt, and conduct assessments, develop Individualized Educational Programs, and use data from assessment to plan instruction within a continuum of service delivery models for diverse children and youth. ECLD Foundations of Language and Linguistics for ESL/Bilingual Educators (3) Provides teachers of English language learners with an introduction to linguistics and its application in the ESL classroom: linguistic concepts about oral and written language use and development. ECLD Effective Instruction in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education (3) This course examines methods of instruction and assessment that target systematic integration of language and content in specific curriculum content areas. Course readings and projects strengthen teachers theoretical foundation while providing hands-on experience in implementing effective instruction and assessment that address the new Colorado English Language Proficiency Standards (WIDA) to enhance student learning. Topics include selection and effective use of resources and materials, instructional and assessment strategies, program planning and improvement, communicating results of assessments to stakeholders, emphasizing culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogies. EDSE Behavioral Interventions (3) This course is designed to provide special educators with researched-based assessment and intervention strategies for working with individuals who have behavioral needs. (Instructor override required.) EDS 603 Field Based Experience CLD/SPED (6) This course is designed for the CLD/SPED graduate student to be provided with opportunities to observe in a variety of special education and second language acquisition settings; reflect on the observations and develop teaching related artifacts suitable for use in specified field experience settings (specifically serving students with special needs and/or those students with culturally/linguistically diverse needs). EDSE Effective Instruction in Special Education (3) This course addresses how to provide curriculum access and effectively teach skills in literacy, math, and general education content areas for students with exceptionalities. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based practices for targeted and embedded instruction of discrete skills in reading and math, and evidence-based strategies for adapting lesson plan formats and delivery modes to assure content access and student progress. 4

5 ECLD Second Language Acquisition Theory (3) Designed for educators who are preparing to teach or who are already teaching, English language learners. Introduces students to the existing body of theory related to second language acquisition. EDSE Secondary Services (3) This course includes an overview of transition services, academic strategies, community-based instruction, and contextual learning in a standards-based framework. Student self-determination and interagency coordination is included. (Instructor override required.) EDS Graduate Research with Diverse Learners (3) This course introduces students to educational research and design and its applicability when conducting and reading educational research, particularly research conducted with students from diverse backgrounds. Capstone Experience A final, comprehensive examination consisting of 1 question from SPED, 1 question from CLD, and 1 question that blends the two fields will serve as the final product of the program. The examination will be provided online, and students will have one week to complete their work. Answers must be both accurate and comprehensive in terms of research and practice, they must provide at least 8 literature citations per question, and products must contain original elements of thought that show evidence for ability to synthesize findings across the fields and in relation to general education practices. Comprehensive examinations are graded Pass/Fail by faculty members from both departments. A student who receives a Fail has one chance to repeat the examination process, which must occur within one year of completing program coursework. Special Notations: 1. The CLD endorsement program requires evidence of a second language experience (course or immersion) and at least one literacy course prior to completing the dual endorsement program. 2. Special Education licensure in Colorado requires passing two content tests: Elementary and Special Education. First, if you are not an already licensed elementary education teacher, you need to pass either the Elementary Praxis or the Elementary PLACE test (choose one). This can be done anytime before starting or while completing your Master s program. Second, all teachers need to pass the Special Education PLACE licensure test. This should be completed near the end of your Master s program. 3. Teachers coming from outside of Colorado will need to obtain Colorado licensure before institutional recommendations for dual endorsements can be provided. 5

6 Advising and Counseling The Office of Academic Support and Advising assists new students and their family members with their transition to the University of Northern Colorado. The Office of Academic Support and Advising coordinates the Tutoring Center ( and Supplemental Instruction programs. Nationally certified tutors provide free individual and group tutoring sessions in approximately 130 different courses encompassed by the major subject areas. Graduate students are assigned an advisor (Dr. Jackson or Dr. Milian) prior to beginning the program at the Orientation Meeting. Students are advised to contact their advisor at least once a semester for individual guidance if they have questions or concerns to help with a variety of academic issues, procedures and opportunities. Advising takes place through the following: 1. There are group advising sessions each semester for each geographic location 2. Appointments are available each week at each campus for individual advising appointments. 3. Phone appointments can also be made for convenient student advising. 4. and online advising take place throughout the program. 5. Handbooks help advise through the Program Handbook. This can all be found on our website. An advisor fills out the Plan of Study Form during the advising session (or an is printed out). The completed forms are then placed in the student s file. Information recorded on the advising sheet documents: semester in program, number of past advising session(s), purpose for the advising appointment, advising recommendations, and plan for resolving any problem(s). The advisor and student then initial the advising form or . Please make sure to include your bear number and cohort with all correspondences. POLICY FOR REQUESTING WAIVER OF A COURSE: To waive a course in the Teaching Diverse Learners MA program, you must have taken an equivalent course from UNC or another university. Faculty in UNC s School of Special Education or School of Teacher Education will determine course equivalence. All UNC Graduate School rules and policies apply to requests for waiving and course: (1) graduate level course credit was earned from an accredited university AND A GRADUATE DEGREE EARNED; (2) course(s) must not be more than 5 years old; (3) you received a letter grade of "B" or better; (4) credit hours were earned in semester hours, not on a quarter system; (5) course(s) taken are equivalent to the UNC course you are attempting to waive. To ensure that proper procedures are followed, you will need to contact your academic advisor to review your request. Please Dr. Milian or Dr. Jackson at [email protected] or [email protected]. Bearmail Bearmail is your UNC account. It is free. You will need to check your Bearmail account daily to look for updates from staff and faculty at UNC. You will log on to Bearmail via your URSA account. Blackboard The online portions of your courses will be available via Blackboard. For information on this tool, please click Books Books will be listed on each professor s syllabi online (website on page 11) and can be accessed in URSA under your course schedule. You may contact individual professors if you do not see a book or syllabus listed. When ordering books please double check the syllabus and make sure you are getting the correct editions. You may get your books online, or at bookstore (call first) on campus. UNC Campus Bookstore in Greeley: UNC Bookstore Inside the UNC University Center at 14 th St and 10 th Avenue in Greeley. Catalog For all UNC program policies please see Computer Labs The labs at each campus vary. The labs at Centerra and Lowry are closed occasionally for other courses, which will be posted on the lab doors. You have an $8 printing account, and will be charged more for additional copies. There are no free copy machines on campus-to make copies, please scan in your document and print it out with your account. Extended Studies Degree Program Graduate Student Guide. Financial Aid Please contact financial aid as soon as possible at: in regard to loans or any questions you may have or feel free to contact the financial aid office with questions. Any student enrolled in a program administered through the Graduate school will not be 8

9 eligible for Pell Grant or state grants. UNC has a small amount of institutional funding for students in Masters programs and we use the FAFSA to determine eligibility. Cash-funded programs are not eligible for foundation scholarships. Students can refer to for information about private funded scholarships. Graduate School Online Orientation Graduation You will be celebrating your graduation upon completion of your coursework at UNC s Butler Hancock Gym in Greeley. Health Insurance UNC s SHIP is a major medical insurance plan using a CIGNA network of physicians and can be used anywhere there is a CIGNA provider. The plan includes a pharmaceutical benefit, mental health coverage, physician visits and hospitalization coverage. Some things you should know: Affordable health care premiums will be charged each fall unless you opt out of the plan. Summer benefits are included at no additional charge. Graduate students taking 6 credits or more automatically receive this benefit. o To be eligible, you must be registered for more than 6 credits by Sept. 9th. If your courses starts later in the term, you will need to register before Sept. 9 th in order to meet the minimum 6 credit requirement. If you already have insurance, and do not wish to be charged for SHIP coverage, you must opt out via an online waiver process every Fall semester o Log in to click the "Financial" tab and look for the "Health Insurance Waivers" on the bottom left o Students who fail to opt out will be automatically charged for this plan. 10 Name/Address Change information Parking Parking is free on all campuses except UNC in Greeley. To obtain a permit, please go to Registering for Classes You will register for your classes as soon as possible on URSA. Click the student tab, and then go to registration tools. You will go to register a class section and plug in the course registration number (CRN) and follow the directions. Please register for all of your courses on one list. Your CRNs are on the included schedule. Note that you will be able to register for your fall courses now, and you will register for additional semesters when courses are posted on your cohort webpage. Make contact with University administration through one designated party in your facility or monitor news stations for instructions. 11 Tuition Tuition Costs for Extended Studies: UNC Card UNC Card- Your UNC Student Card will be brought to your campus by Mr. Shaw. Your card will not have your picture on it. If you wish to obtain a card with your photo you will need to let Mr. Shaw know after the orientation meeting and go the University Center on your own. Withdrawing from a course or the program must be done in conjunction with the UNC Registrar at and is subject to all dates and time frames at the Registrar s calendar. URSA URSA is the University of Northern Colorado s online single point of access to secure information and tools for students, faculty and staff. Students use URSA to register for and withdraw from classes, view their grades and transcripts, access and pay their student bills, view information and messages about their financial aid, fill out and submit forms and more. Faculty members use URSA to post textbook information, produce class rosters, assign and submit grades and perform degree evaluations, among other things. Staff use URSA in conducting the administrative and financial business of the university as well as to access information about their paychecks. 13 Language Program Exit Requirement for CLD: You must show evidence of having studied a second language or you must meet this requirement in some appropriate alternative manner before you complete the program. On the lines below, explain how you have met/expect to meet this requirement. Also, at the beginning of the term you plan to graduate from this program, you will be expected to submit relevant documentation to your academic adviser to show you have done so. Some examples are: (1) You have previously taken a foreign language course while in high school (it can be any language except ASL); (2) You have previously taken a college level foreign language course (any language except ASL); (3) You have attended a Study Abroad program in a country where English is not the primary language; (4) You are bilingual (an interview may be required); and/or (5) You will take a language course while you are enrolled in the program, either at a 4-year institution, a community college, or a community language course such as offered in a library (45 hour minimum). State Tests Program Exit Requirements and Licensure Requirements for SPED: If you do not have a Colorado Elementary Education Licensure, you must pass the Elementary PLACE (or PRAXIS) exam before signing up to take the field experience course (EDS 603). We advise you to take this test, if needed, within your first year of study. You will also need to have passed the Special Education Generalist PLACE test prior to completing the field experience course. We advise you to complete this activity during the semester just before applying for EDS 603. Please pre-plan -- Check the applicable state websites for dates the tests are offered early in your program.
