9 ROADM Benefit Typical Sonet/SDH network with ADMs and DCS WDM engineering rules and scalability can be quite complex, especially in a metro environment (rings, mesh, every node an OADM) SDH/Sonet networks much simpler to plan: Access to entire bandwidth at every ADM Simple engineering rules (single hop only) Easy addition of new network elements Optical layer reconfigurability addresses many, but not all of those issues: Single wavelength granularity Power budget and dispersion (but not OSNR) reset at every node Reduced module variety (compared to filters dedicated to part of the spectrum) Reconfigurable WDM network with eroadms and SCE-WSS ROADM simplifies engineering rules; WDM network scales more like an SDH/Sonet ring KEY ENABLER: CONTROL PLANE 9
10 ROADM Network Topologies Interconnected Rings 4+ Degree Interconnection Any wavelength to any ring Metro Access Interconnect 3 and 4+ Degree Interconnection Optical pass-through from access to metro/regional Metro Access Interconnect 3 and 4+ Degree Interconnection Multi-path optical routing option 10
11 ROADM OPEX Savings Simplification Savings Network Planning Reduced number of parts Typical ~10% savings in accurate network planning time NE Installation and Commissioning Service Provisioning Network Maintenance and Upgrade OPM allows optical diagnostics within minutes vs. hours. Network can detect impairments and dynamically adjust from headend vs. truck roll. Tunable lasers and colorless ROADM simplifies fibering Need only to visit end sites to install transponders with ROADM. FOADM required visiting all intermediate OADM site to patch through. Similar simplification as described in service provisioning. Depending on network size, diagnosis can take a several days (i.e., visiting 15 intermediate sites) or a single day for a PT-PT link. Up to 80% time savings in general rings Save truck rolls to intermediate site to patch fiber through OADM. Up to 1/2 day for each remote intermediate site. Up to 80% saving in circuit provisioning by reducing visits to intermediate sites. (10 node linear system.) Up to 80% saving in circuit provisioning by reducing visits to intermediate sites. (10 node linear system.) Nominal 10% savings in Network Planning 80% savings where truck-rolls are avoided 11
