2 Abstract: Over the past few years, sector of education, particularly higher education, has made a substantial investment into the use of information technology as tools to enhance the pedagogic process and student support in order to improve both student services and performance. Many universities have substituted entirely the classic teaching by online courses, where programs and courses are provided electronically to learners using different media or directly online via internet. Given the advantages of online teaching which offers student the possibility to choose the appropriate planning, to deal with learning requirements and to manage learning duration, online programs and courses are spreading quickly and attaining different education phases and covering the majority higher education areas. However, online teaching has to deal with quality matters and with the challenge of achieving learning outcomes. Scholars, researchers, accreditation institution, public authorities and education managers are concerned by mechanisms of quality assurance in online courses and proposed many models and frameworks. This study explored the literature discussing the quality matters in online teaching, and found that the main important areas in quality assurance in this kind of education are the institutional commitment, availability of learning resources, web site design, learning content design, students support and services, faculty support, students' assessment and program evaluation. Furthermore, the study examined the quality assurance system used by the enhanced program for distance education in King Faisal University as case study where quality is assured by many procedures and supported by electronic tools and software. 2
