2 CDAP is Giving Back Lives Mission Statement Our mission is to use state-of-the-art research to discover and disseminate scientific knowledge to improve the lives of those consuming alcohol and/or suffering from alcohol and drug use disorders. CDAP is...world-class Research, Education, Patient Care, and Outreach The Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs is one of the nation s premier centers for the study and treatment of alcohol and substance abuse. Situated within CDAP is the Charleston Alcohol Research Center, one of only 15 National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Alcohol Research Centers in the United States. Our world-renowned researchers participate in the nation s major clinical trials for alcoholism and cocaine abuse. U.S. News and World Report ranks CDAP as being one of the best graduate drug and alcohol programs in the United States. Since 1995, our faculty has provided state-of-the-art training for future addiction scientists and clinicians. Recognized internationally for discoveries of advanced treatment options, our clinical and medical professionals utilize state-of-the-art tools, such as brain imaging, genetics, behavioral pharmacology and therapies to provide better treatments for alcohol and substance abuse. We are dedicated to promoting greater community awareness on the effects of alcohol and drug abuse. Our addiction experts share the latest research on treatment options for drug and alcohol addiction with physicians, mental health professionals, lawyers, and the public. 3 CDAP is...cutting Edge Research CDAP is...world-class Education CDAP is a national leader in the search for the causes and prevention of alcohol use disorders and drug addiction. We are providing new insights into addiction as a disease and how to treat it. Our basic scientists use modern technology and our clinical researchers participate in most of the nation s major clinical trials for alcoholism and cocaine abuse. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the pharmaceutical industry heavily invest in our clinical trials which focus on: U.S. News and World Report has ranked CDAP as one of the best drug and alcohol graduate programs in the nation! The effects of alcohol and drugs on the brain Cravings for alcohol and cocaine using brain imaging The role of genetics in developing addiction How stress threatens sobriety Drinking to cope with social anxiety Alcohol tolerance and excessive drinking Understanding relapse and withdrawal CDAP is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop the next generation of addiction medicine researchers. Our faculty train future physicians, psychologists, neuroscientists, dentists, and pharmacists in the newest techniques to research, identify, prevent, and treat substance abuse and alcoholism. Training for our scientists includes programs in basic laboratory science, addiction biology, neuropharmacology, alcohol liver disease, clinical research, and alcohol/substance abuse treatment. Research is the gateway to understanding any disorder. By understanding, we can find cures. Finding cures, we can prevent suffering. That is the reason I went into medicine. 4 CDAP is...from Bench to Bedside CDAP is...patient Care Part of our mission includes translating research into clinical practice, educating health care professionals and the lay public. We are strongly committed to the successful translation of our research findings to the real world; without such technology transfer, our mission would be incomplete! We are doing this by: Using modern basic science lab techniques to understand the effects of alcohol and drugs on the brain Developing new medications for treatment of alcohol & cocaine cravings Partnering with the pharmaceutical industry in the discovery of medication Immediately bringing research into practice to benefit patients As highly trained addiction specialists, our clinicians offer a full spectrum of treatment. CDAP s alcohol and substance abuse treatment philosophy encompasses a variety of biological, psychological and social interventions that have been shown to be effective. Unlike many other treatment programs, no single approach characterizes the CDAP program, since we know from experience that not everyone responds to the same therapies in the same way. What is unique about CDAP is that we use medications and therapies that have been shown, in clinical trials, to be effective in reducing risk of relapse. In addition, our therapists have received specialized training in using these therapies with addicted individuals. Patients are provided with several different treatments, thereby maximizing the chances that they will benefit from the treatment experience. CDAP offers both inpatient treatment at the MUSC Institute of Psychiatry in downtown Charleston as well as several different types of outpatient treatment programs. CDAP - Getting Your Life Back! 5 CDAP is...community Outreach CDAP is...reducing the Stigma The Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs is dedicated to promoting greater community awareness on the effects of alcohol and drug abuse. Annually, CDAP reaches over 15,000 parents, teachers, and students through presentations about the human brain and the effects of drugs on the brain, and has developed curricula for SC educators about the biology of addiction. Many people believe that addiction to alcohol and other drugs is a weakness or lack of willpower that is primarily a moral or character problem. Contrary to this popular opinion, scientific research, especially in the last 10 years, has convinced experts that addiction is definitely a disease of the brain. CDAP Faculty serve in leadership roles with state and national organizations involved in the prevention and treatment of substance abuse Our addiction experts share the latest research on treatment options for drug and alcohol addiction with physicians, mental health professionals, lawyers and the public Faculty are involved with educating the community on a variety of topics, such as: Positive/negative health effects of alcohol use Risk factors for developing an addiction Warning signs of adolescent substance abuse Role of stress and alcohol use Dangers of binge drinking and dangers of cocaine/stimulant abuse We are expanding our efforts toward the prevention of substance abuse and alcoholism through education and advocacy. We want to partner with you to share the latest research findings in an effort to help individuals better understand both the positive and negative aspects of drinking, and to more fully appreciate that while drinking can improve health, it also puts certain people at risk for alcohol and substance abuse.
