The Scholarship covers the cost of registration and one banquet ticket plus $500 to help with travel and room costs for attending the SWFS Triennial meeting. Consideration will be given to past academic performance, the application, essay, and presentation abstract. A Selection Committee will review the application and select the two applications that are most qualified. Chosen applicants are required to give a minute presentation on their presentation abstract topic at the Society for Wildlife Forensic Science Triennial Meeting. The purpose of this application is to acquaint the Selection Committee with the candidate. It should be thoroughly completed. Please remember that this is the minimum you must complete to be considered for the scholarship. Please feel free to attach letters of recommendation or any other documentation that will reflect those qualities being sought by the Selection Committee. Photocopies, etc. are acceptable. Abstract Instructions In order to incorporate your abstract and author information into the meeting program, we ask that you format and submit your abstract using the following instructions. Content of Abstract Your abstract should be informative and contain the following information: A short, specific title. A sentence statement of the paper or poster s hypothesis. A brief synopsis of the content or statement of the methods, whichever is pertinent. A summary of the results obtained. A general statement of conclusion. Your abstract should contain a maximum of 300 words, not including the title. Abstracts that do not meet these requirements will not be accepted. A brief statement of what impact the presentation or research will have on wildlife forensic sciences. Abstracts should NOT be written in the first person. Format of Abstract Your abstract must be typed and submitted in a legible format following the instructions provided below: Use Times New Roman, 10 point font. Use 1-inch margins on all borders. Text should be single-spaced. Use left justification with indentations for new paragraphs. Abstract should contain no more than 300 words, not including the title. The preferred file format is Microsoft Word. Abstract title should be in bold. Presenting author should be in italics and indicated by an asterisk (*). Gonzales and Maggie H. Broadwater, the 2010 recipients of the Society for Wildlife Forensic Science Inaugural Meeting funding awards. Attendees will also find that others who have been conducting research in the area of wildlife forensic science will present interesting, beneficial information. These presentations will impact the wildlife forensic community by serving as a venue for the exchange of information between and among laboratories currently performing diagnostic analyses of samples for various wildlife law enforcement agencies. Novel methods and improvements upon old methods of determining species of origin will be discussed. Access to a computerized hair database for analysis of class characters, and new techniques for discovering the origin of marine oils in dietary supplements through the use of GC/FID, GC/MS and LC/APCI-MS will add invaluable tools to the wildlife forensic scientist s collection of species identification methods. Attendees will also have the opportunity to attend workshops in the fields of wildlife and statistics, hair identification, chemical identification of species, and real-time PCR given by experts in their respective fields. For those who are planning to expand the capabilities of their laboratories or are interested in gaining additional knowledge in these areas, the workshops offer the chance for people to ask questions and discuss with others the merits and drawbacks of each particular area of research. Presenters and attendees alike will discover the field of wildlife forensic science is ever expanding, and novel research is being conducted around the globe to find new procedures for identifying species, individuals and populations. The goal of protecting and conserving wildlife is shared by many and is an extraordinarily worthwhile pursuit. Oral Presentation Format Please use Microsoft Windows version 7 or earlier for PowerPoint presentations. Presentations will be between minutes with a couple of minutes for questions (length of the presentations is going to be dependent on the number of presenters; this information will be forwarded after the March 1 st deadline). Please plan on providing a copy of your presentation on a USB drive. The presentation will be downloaded and the USB drive returned to you. Poster Instructions Posters should be printed on a single page measuring no more than 36 x 56, landscape format is preferred. Poster papers may be set up on the afternoon of May 23 and should remain on display throughout evening poster session. At least one of the authors is expected to remain with their poster during the evening poster session. Page 3
