Security features of BES12 Cloud Security features of BES12 Cloud 1 The BES12 Cloud infrastructure includes the following features to help provide security, privacy, and continuity to your organization: Encryption to keep your data protected while it's in transit Access controls to keep your data confidential from other tenants Physical security to keep BlackBerry data centers safe A software development model that focuses on security Security policies and rules for conduct for BlackBerry administrators who manage IT systems High availability, disaster recovery, and contingency plans to handle emergencies An architecture that is designed to provide a secure link between your organization's mail and content servers and devices Tenant control of device behavior using IT administration commands, IT policies, and profiles For more information about securing devices, visit help.blackberry.com/detectlang/bes12/current to read the security content. For more information about IT policies, download the Policy Reference Spreadsheet at help.blackberry.com/detectlang/bes12- cloud/current/policy-reference-spreadsheet-zip/ How BES12 Cloud protects data stored in BlackBerry data centers BES12 Cloud stores the following data in BlackBerry data centers: Your organization's information such as your organization's name and location Names and addresses of users BlackBerry device PINs or serial numbers Device hardware and software versions Device carriers and telephone numbers Free space on devices BES12 Cloud does not store your organization's messages, calendar entries, or organizer data sent to and from devices in BlackBerry data centers. BES12 Cloud includes capabilities that help keep your organization's data highly secure from denial of service attacks, malware, data loss, and compromise of data integrity while the data is stored. 4
Security features of BES12 Cloud The capabilities include: Firewalls between BES12 Cloud and the Internet Access control lists Network scanners (for example, intrusion detection systems and intrusion prevention systems) Antivirus solutions and antispam solutions Solutions for data-loss prevention Monitoring by IT security personnel Full backup and restore functionality How BES12 Cloud keeps your organization's data private BES12 Cloud helps keep your organization's data private by restricting access to its hardware and software to only the individuals and systems that have valid requirements and business needs. BES12 Cloud uses the following methods to help keep your organization's data private: Logs and audits all access to the infrastructure. Log files are reviewed regularly by BlackBerry administrators. Maps your organization and your organization's users to specific tenants during the provisioning process. Allows for directory authentication of administrators and users before permitting the administrators and users to access the BES12 Cloud consoles (requires BlackBerry Cloud Connector). Controls access to the management console so that only your organization's administrators or partners can manage your organization's user accounts and devices. Controls access to features such as contact lookup so that your organization's users can view only contacts that are part of your organization. Security and high availability for BlackBerry data centers BlackBerry data centers are located around the world, and are designed to provide high availability and disaster recovery. BlackBerry data centers provide highly secure physical access to buildings, monitoring, and hardware redundancies to help protect BES12 Cloud from natural disasters and unauthorized access. BlackBerry data centers have disaster recovery plans for service outages. The plans are designed to have minimal impact on device users. Data and applications are backed up in near real time to avoid data loss. 5
Security features of BES12 Cloud Data center security All BlackBerry data centers have physical access controls in place to protect them from unauthorized access and safeguard against environmental hazards. BlackBerry data centers are geographically distributed globally, and each facility undergoes a thorough risk assessment. Facilities have multiple redundant power supplies, climate control systems, fire suppression systems, and Internet connections. These environments are monitored at all times by a dedicated team and the systems and failover procedures are tested regularly. Servers and gateways are protected through a combination of antivirus software, enhanced monitoring, redundancy, segregation, intrusion-detection, and intrusion-prevention systems. BlackBerry implements multiple layers of control to protect against distributed DoS attacks. We have deployed both local and cloud-based DoS mitigation technology across our systems. Security policies and procedures for managing the IT system for BES12 Cloud BlackBerry employs security experts who create security policies that are designed to comply with various international standards and help make sure that IT system procedures meet the security requirements of various organizations. For example, security policies control any changes to IT systems and are designed to reduce unplanned outages. Security policies also control how BlackBerry monitors for and responds to security incidents. BlackBerry employees who manage the IT system for the BES12 Cloud use the security policies to help verify that BES12 Cloud maintains the security, continuity, and privacy of your organization's data. 6
Architecture: BES12 Cloud Architecture: BES12 Cloud 2 Component Your servers BES12 Cloud BlackBerry Infrastructure Devices Description The mail servers, content servers, and application servers that your users' devices can access and that are located within your organization's network. BES12 Cloud is a cloud-based EMM solution that is hosted by BlackBerry. The BlackBerry Infrastructure registers user information for device activation and validates licensing information for BES12 Cloud. BES12 Cloud supports BlackBerry 10, ios, Android, and Windows Phone devices. 7
Protecting data in transit to and from devices Protecting data in transit to and from devices 3 Data in transit between devices and your resources and between devices and BES12 Cloud is protected by different forms of encryption, depending on the communication method. How devices connect to your resources Devices can connect to your organization s resources (for example, mail servers, web servers, and content servers) using a number of communication methods. By default, devices try to connect to your organization s resources using the following communication methods, in order: 1. Work VPN profiles that you configure (VPN profiles are supported on BlackBerry 10, ios, Samsung KNOX MDM, and Samsung KNOX Workspace devices only) 2. Work Wi-Fi profiles that you configure 3. Personal VPN profiles and personal Wi-Fi profiles that a user configures on the device By default, work apps on the device can also use any of these communication methods to access the resources in your organization s environment. 8
Protecting data in transit to and from devices Types of encryption used for communication between devices and your resources Communication between a device and your organization s resources can use various types of encryption. The type of encryption used depends on the connection method. Encryption type Wi-Fi encryption (IEEE ) VPN encryption SSL/TLS encryption Description Wi-Fi encryption is used for data in transit between a device and wireless access point if the wireless access point was set up to use Wi-Fi encryption. VPN encryption is used for data in transit between a device and a VPN server. SSL/TLS encryption is used for data in transit between a device and content server, web server, or mail server in your organization. The encryption for this connection must be set up separately on each server and uses a separate certificate with each server. The server might use SSL or TLS, depending on how it's set up. Work Wi-Fi connection encryption In a work Wi-Fi connection, devices connect to your organization s resources using the settings that you configured in a Wi-Fi profile. Wi-Fi encryption is used if the wireless access point was set up to use it. VPN connection encryption 9
Protecting data in transit to and from devices In a VPN connection, devices connect to your organization s resources through any wireless access point or a mobile network, your organization s firewall, and your organization s VPN server. Wi-Fi encryption is used if the wireless access point was set up to use it. The device can use either password or certificate-based authentication to connect. Protecting data in transit between BES12 Cloud and devices BES12 Cloud protects the data in transit between itself and devices. During the device activation process, a mutually authenticated TLS connection is established between BES12 Cloud and the BlackBerry 10 device or the BES12 Client on an ios, Android, or Windows Phone device. When BES12 Cloud sends device management data such as IT policies, profiles, or IT administration commands to BlackBerry 10 devices and devices send data back to BES12 Cloud, the data can travel between the device and BES12 Cloud through a work Wi-Fi, VPN, personal Wi-Fi, or mobile network connection. Regardless of the path, the data is protected by client and server certificates over the mutually authenticated TLS connection. 10
Protecting data in transit to and from devices Types of encryption used to send device management data to devices Sending device management data between devices and BES12 Cloud uses various types of encryption. 11
Protecting data in transit between BES12 Cloud and your company directory Protecting data in transit between BES12 Cloud and your company directory 4 The BlackBerry Cloud Connector is an optional component that you can install behind your organization's firewall to provide a secure connection between BES12 Cloud and your company directory. If you use the BlackBerry Cloud Connector to give BES12 Cloud access to your company directory, you enable the following features: You can create user accounts by searching for and importing user data from the company directory. Users can use their directory credentials to access BES12 Self-Service. Administrators can log in to the management console using their directory credentials. BES12 Cloud synchronizes user data with the directory daily. You can also start the synchronization process manually for an individual. For more information about configuring the BlackBerry Cloud Connector, see the Administration content. Data flow: Establishing a secure connection between BES12 Cloud and the BlackBerry Cloud Connector 1. You download the installation and activation files using the management console and install the BlackBerry Cloud Connector on a computer that can access the Internet and your company directory. 12
Protecting data in transit between BES12 Cloud and your company directory 2. The BlackBerry Cloud Connector establishes a connection with BES12 Cloud and sends an activation request. 3. BES12 Cloud verifies that the activation information is valid. 4. The BlackBerry Cloud Connector and BES12 Cloud generate a shared symmetric key using the activation password and EC-SPEKE. The shared symmetric key protects the CSR and response. 5. The BlackBerry Cloud Connector performs the following actions: a b c d e Generates a key pair for the certificate Creates a PKCS#10 CSR that includes the public key of the key pair Encrypts the CSR using the shared symmetric key and AES-256 in CBC mode with PKCS #5 padding Computes an HMAC of the encrypted CSR using SHA-256 and appends it to the CSR Sends the encrypted CSR and HMAC to BES12 Cloud 6. BES12 Cloud performs the following actions: a b c d e f Verifies the HMAC of the encrypted CSR and decrypts the CSR using the shared symmetric key Packages a client certificate using your organization's information and the CSR that the BlackBerry Cloud Connector sent Signs the client certificate using the enterprise management root certificate Encrypts the client certificate, enterprise management root certificate, and the BES12 Cloud URL using the shared symmetric key and AES-256 in CBC mode with PKCS #5 padding Computes an HMAC of the encrypted client certificate, enterprise management root certificate, and the BES12 Cloud URL and appends it to the encrypted data Sends the encrypted data and HMAC to the BlackBerry Cloud Connector 7. The BlackBerry Cloud Connector performs the following actions: a b c d e f Verifies the HMAC Decrypts the data it received from BES12 Cloud Stores the client certificate and the enterprise management root certificate in its keystore Establishes a TLS connection with BES12 Cloud Creates a registration request that includes the tenant ID, the client certificate signed with its private key using SHA1 and ECDSA, and the time stamp of the signing action Sends the registration request to BES12 Cloud 8. BES12 Cloud performs the following actions: a b c Validates the registration request Verifies that the time stamp of the signing action isn't older than 3 minutes Performs one of the following actions: If the validation is successful, registers the BlackBerry Cloud Connector instance and sends the BlackBerry Cloud Connector an authorization token that the BlackBerry Cloud Connector uses for subsequent connections with BES12 Cloud. 13
Protecting data in transit between BES12 Cloud and your company directory If the validation fails, BES12 Cloud closes the TLS connection with the BlackBerry Cloud Connector. After the BlackBerry Cloud Connector is activated and registration is complete, when BES12 Cloud sends a directory request to the BlackBerry Cloud Connector, a mutually authenticated TLS connection is established using the trusted certificates and the authorization token and the BlackBerry Cloud Connector sends your company directory information to BES12 Cloud over the secure TLS connection. Directory information stored by BES12 Cloud If you use the BlackBerry Cloud Connector, BES12 Cloud stores the following information about users: First name, last name, and display name address User principal name Distinguished name objectguid BES12 Cloud never stores user credentials. When a user logs in to the BES12 Self-Service or the management console, BES12 Cloud sends the encrypted credentials to BlackBerry Cloud Connector for authentication. The BlackBerry Cloud Connector verifies the credentials and sends only a Yes or No response back to BES12 Cloud. 14
