Remembrance Day University closed. Classes normally held on this day will be held on Thursday, November 27, Lectures end for the Fall, 2014 term, except as noted below. 4 Faculty of Education Post Baccalaureate Program 4 At A Glance Courses by Stream Courses in the Education for Sustainability Stream -003 ST: Global Citizenship is a core course in the Education for Sustainability Stream. Students who are not in this stream may register for this course; however, priority will be given to students who have been admitted to the stream. EDUC ST: Global Citizenship Courses in the School Counseling Stream The following are core courses in the School Counseling Stream. Students who are not in this stream may register for EDUC Introduction to School Counseling; however, priority will be given to students in the stream. Students who are not in the School Counseling Stream may not enrol in EDUC Counseling Practicum Skills. Please see the section Course Descriptions for additional information on prerequisites and restrictions for this course. EDUC Introduction to School Counseling EDUC Counseling Practicum Skills Courses in the Inclusive Education Stream The Special Education Stream is being offered on a pilot basis to student cohorts from the Winnipeg School Division and the Seven Oaks School Division. The following courses are reserved for students who have been admitted to these cohorts. If these courses have available space once cohort students have registered, other students may register with permission from the Faculty of Education. Please note that there is unlikely to be any available space in The Exceptional Child I. The Inclusive Education stream will be open to all students in the Winter term, when we will offer ST: Introduction to Inclusive Ed I ST: Assessment (Core course, reserved for SOSD Cohort) -002 ST: The Exceptional Child I (Core course, reserved for WSD Cohort) Courses in the Math Enhancement Stream The following is a core course in the Math Enhancement Stream. Students must be admitted to this stream in order to register for this course. This course is being offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and is listed as a Math course on WebAdvisor. MATH Numbers and Operations I
5 Faculty of Education Post Baccalaureate Program 5 General Information Applying for Admission To be eligible for admission to the PBDE, students must have maintained a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all degree or after-degree programs hold a Bachelor of Education degree (or equivalent) students who hold a Bachelor s degree in an area other than Education may apply to the General Stream only, provided that they have two years of full time work experience in a school setting (students must submit a resume and references verifying this experience). To apply for admission, students must submit the following documents: an application form available to download from the Faculty of Education website at an application fee of $80.00 (payable by check, money order, or credit card) official university transcripts (students who graduated from UW, and who have not attended any other institutions since, do not need to submit a transcript) proof of name change if applicable please see the application form for additional documents that may be required Visiting Students A Visiting Student is someone who is currently enrolled in a program of studies at another post-secondary institution, and who wishes to complete University of Winnipeg course(s) for transfer credit back to their home institution. To apply as a visiting student, you must submit an application form (check Visiting Student ), the $80.00 application fee, and an official transcript. You must also submit an official Letter of Permission, approving your intended courses, from your home institution. If your home institution requires a course outline, please contact the Faculty of Education at Please be advised the course outlines may not be available until shortly before a course begins. Visiting students may only register for those courses listed on the Letter of Permission, and only if there is space available. Visiting students must have completed course work equivalent to any UW prerequisites. Certain courses, such as practicum courses in the School Counseling Stream, and Project courses in the Education for Sustainability Stream, are not available to Visiting students. Please keep a copy of your Letter of Permission, in case you need it to register in courses. Deadline to Apply August 1, 2014 for courses that begin in September, 2014 November 1, 2014 for courses that begin in January, 2015 Please note that registration for Fall and Winter begins in late June. Students are encouraged to apply by early May so that they may register before courses fill.

Be sure to keep this information in a safe place, as you will use it throughout your program. Your single login username ID and password gives you access to these systems: WebAdvisor the University s online registration system Webmail ( ) the system to use for all communications with the University Nexus the new learning management system Campus Computers located in various places, including the Library and Uplink on the 4th floor of Centennial Hall Registration Appointment An message will be sent in early June to your University webmail account giving you a Fall/Winter Term registration start date/time for the WebAdvisor online registration system. You can also find your appointment through WebAdvisor. Log on to WebAdvisor, click on Current Students, and under Registration, choose View My Registration Time. 8 Faculty of Education Post Baccalaureate Program 8 Graduation Applying to Graduate Students must must apply for graduation, even if they do not plan to attend Convocation. Students can download an Application to Graduate from the Student Records Office website: There are three Convocation dates each year. The following is general information. Please check the current UW Calendar for specific dates. Spring Convocation is typically held in June. Students must have completed all courses by April. The deadline to apply is mid-february. Fall Convocation is typically held in October. Students must have completed all courses by August. The deadline to apply is mid-august. Winter Convocation There is no formal ceremony, but degrees and diplomas are conferred in mid February. Students must have completed all courses by December. The deadline to apply is mid-november. Applying for a Salary Reclassification Please note that the following is general information only. The University is not involved in matters related to salary reclassification and employment. Questions should be directed to your employer, or to the Professional Certification Unit in Russell. This can take up to three weeks. If you would like to purchase additional transcripts, please see the website for more information: To be eligible for the School Counsellor or Special Education Teacher certificates, candidates must have completed the PBDE, and must have accumulated a minimum of two (2) years successful teaching experience while holding a valid Manitoba Permanent Professional teaching certificate. Students applying for this certification will also need to submit a Verification of Teaching Experience form available on Manitoba Education website:
9 Faculty of Education Post Baccalaureate Program 9 PBDE Requirements General Requirements Applying to All Streams Students must complete 30 credit hours of course work to earn a PBDE. A maximum of 12 credit hours may be taken from other post-secondary institutions and, upon approval from the Faculty of Education, transferred to the University of Winnipeg s PBDE Program. Generally, only formal university courses will be accepted for credit toward the PBDE. Except in cases where PD sessions have been pre-approved as part of a formal partnerships between the Faculty of Education and a particular school division. Students must achieve a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 (C+) across 30 credit hours in order to graduate with the PBDE. Provincial Certification School Counselor Certificate Students who complete the School Counseling Stream may apply to Manitoba Education for a School Counselor Certificate. In order to be eligible for certification, students must have completed the 30 credit hour PBDE, and must have accumulated a minimum of two years successful teaching experience while holding a valid Manitoba Permanent Professional teaching certificate. Special Education Teacher Students who complete the Special Education Stream may apply to Manitoba Education for a Special Education Teacher Certificate. In order to be eligible for certification, students must have completed the 30 credit hour PBDE, and must have accumulated a minimum of two years successful teaching experience while holding a valid Manitoba Permanent Professional teaching certificate. Special Education Coordinator A Special Education Coordinator certificate may be given when the candidate: Holds a valid Manitoba Special Education Teacher s Certificate Completes five (5) years of approved experience in two or more of the following areas: Regular classroom teaching, Resource or special class teaching, or both, Approved clinical or special agency work at a professional level such as psychology, reading, social work, speech and hearing, and school counseling, Consultative or supervisory experience such as school administrator or department head. Requests must be made in writing to the Professional Certification Unit, and must include a statement from a current or former employer verifying experience.
10 Faculty of Education Post Baccalaureate Program 10 PBDE Stream Requirements General Stream (30 credit hours) A minimum of 18 credit hours must be University of Winnipeg Education courses at the 5000 level (which fulfills the Residency Requirement). A maximum of 12 credit hours may be below the 5000 level (but must be above the 1000 level), and may include courses from faculties other than Education, and/or courses completed at other universities (all 30 credit hours can be 5000 level Education courses) Educating for Sustainability Stream (30 credit hours) To receive a PBDE in Education for Sustainability, students must complete 30 credit hours, of which at least 21 credit hours are approved Education for Sustainability courses. An Introduction to Sustainability I and II and the Project course are compulsory. Courses are open to all students, and students who do not complete the Education for Sustainability requirements will still be eligible for a general PBDE. Fall and Winter courses are offered on campus one Saturday each month, with an online component in between. Summer courses are typically on campus for four to five days, and may include an online component as well. 13 Faculty of Education Post Baccalaureate Program 13 Math Enhancement Stream (30 credit hours) The PBDE in Math Enhancement is designed to give K-8 classroom teachers a thorough understanding of topics in the K-8 Curriculum, and a foundation of pedagogical approaches that will engage math learners in their schools. The program will consist of 30 credit hours, and will include courses offered by both the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and the Faculty of Education. Students will explore standardized, norm and criterion-referenced assessments, and the interpretation of specific programming for identified students. This course will also give students the opportunity to work with strategies and direction in working collaboratively with administrators, classroom teachers, students, parents, and auxiliary professional personnel who may be involved with the students personal and educational goals. Its focus is to provide an introduction to the extensive scope of children with exceptionalities and to the field of special education in Manitoba. The primary emphasis will be on the causes, characteristics, and implications of specific exceptionalities. This overview will encompass children with special needs including those with communication disorders, intellectual challenges, and learning disabilities. The course will include creative, gifted, talented children, as well as children with sensory impairments, at-risk children and youth, and children with behavior and emotional problems. Important Note: The University of Winnipeg has established a special partnership with the Winnipeg School Division. This course is reserved for students in this program only. There is not likely to be any available space for other students.

Henderson Dates and Times: The course will be held September 3 to November 25 online, and one Saturday per month on campus. Students may complete the online component on their own schedule but the on campus dates are compulsory. Online September 3 to November 25, 2014 On Campus Saturday, September 27 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, October 25 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, November 22 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Location: 3C14 (3 rd Floor, Manitoba Hall) Course Description: The terms Citizenship and Global Citizenship often generate a myriad of definitions and reactions. In this course, we will debate, discuss, and critically analyze the concept of Global Citizenship by investigating the political, social, economic, and ecological connections humans have with each other, with other species, and the biosphere. An introduction to early understandings of citizenship and well-being leads to an examination of our relationships with all systems in the 21st century. Participants will be pushed to think of how teachers can create transformative learning environments for learners which foster ecologically literate and empathetic citizens. This is a core course in the Educating for Sustainability Stream. Students in the General stream may register for this course, but priority will be given to students who are in the Educating for Sustainability Stream. Educ Introduction to School Counselling Instructor: C. Pitura Dates and Times: September 9 to November 26, 2014 Tuesdays, 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Location: Room 2M74 (2nd Floor, Manitoba Hall) Course Description: This course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the profession of school counselling. The objectives of this course are to provide students with an overview and general understanding of (1) historical perspectives and current activities of counsellors, (2) the role and function of counsellors in a variety of settings, (3) techniques utilized by counsellors, (4) multicultural considerations in counselling, (5) organization of counselling programs, and (6) legal and ethical guidelines. This is a required course in the School Counselling Stream. Students who are not in this stream can take this course as an elective.
16 Faculty of Education Post Baccalaureate Program 16 EDUC Counseling Practicum Skills Instructor: P. Locken Dates and Times: September 9 to November 25, 2014 Tuesdays, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Location: St. James School Division Educational Support Services Jameswood School, 1 Braintree Crescent Course Description: The practicum skills course provides students with the opportunity to practice counselling skills and techniques in a supervised lab setting. Students analyze case studies and use digital recordings to practice counselling, consulting and coordinating skills. Students are required to conduct 10 individual counselling sessions with a client. Students are expected to demonstrate a progression of skills that allow gradual progress into direct service with students in a school setting (under guidance of a site supervisor). Prerequisites: Completion of 24 credit hours in the Counselling stream, including Introduction to Counselling; Theories and Issues in School Counselling; Counselling Ethics; ONE of Group Counselling, Early and Middle Years School Counselling, or Senior Years School Counselling; and 12 credit hours of Counselling Electives. Co-requisite: Students registering in this course must register in Educ Supervised School Counselling Practicum in the Winter term, All students registering for this course will require permission from the Faculty of Education. MATH Math for K-8 Teachers: Numbers and Operations I Instructor: TBA Dates and Times: September 8 to November 22, 2014 Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Location: Room 3M64 (3rd Floor, Manitoba Hall) Course Description: Numbers and Operations I is a post-baccalaureate course designed to give K-8 classroom teachers a thorough understanding of topics in the K-8 curriculum and to link those concepts to topics covered in later years. Topics covered include history of number systems, laws of operations, standard algorithms for the base 10 system, arithmetic in other bases, rational numbers and decimals, ratios and percentages, divisibility rules and problem solving. Prerequisites: Must hold a B.Ed. and must be a classroom teacher. Restrictions: Students who do not hold a B.Ed. at the time of registration may not receive credit for this course. Must hold a B.Ed. degree and must be a classroom teacher. This is a core course in the Math Enhancement Stream. Students must be admitted to the stream in order to register for this course.
17 Faculty of Education Post Baccalaureate Program 17 CLAS /758 Integrating the Ancient World into School Curricula Instructor: TBA Dates and Times: Online (section 750) September 3 to November 25, 2014 On Campus (section 758) September 3 to November 25, 2014 MWF, 9:30 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. Location: 1L10 (for students in section 758) This course, offered by the Department of Classics, is a web based, video-on-demand course. Students can choose to either attend on campus classes, or to view video classes on the internet. There are two sections of this course. Students enrolling in section 758 will attend classes in the university s On Campus Studio, Room 1L10. The professor and students will be video recorded for broadcast on the internet. Students enrolling in section 750 will view classes on the internet at High speed internet is mandatory. Course Description: Intended specifically for Education students and professional teachers seeking a post-baccalaureate, this course provides instruction in aspects of Greek and Roman antiquity that could supplement or enhance primary, middle school, and high school curriculum. Special focus is on ideas and methods of integrating this material effectively into ore-existing courses in the language arts, history, social studies, mathematics, and sciences. Topics may include etymology (both words in common English usage and scientific vocabulary), influential historical events, seminal works of ancient literature, lines of philosophical inquiry, salient aspects of architectural design, and legal processes and governmental organization that resonate with our own.
