RESEARCH Generosity Produces Meaningful Results Jeffrey Landercasper, MD The generosity of community members and organizations that support the Steppin Out in Pink walk for breast cancer has made it possible for Gundersen Medical Foundation to support one doctor s quest to improve the quality of patient care on a national level. As a member of the Gundersen Health System s Surgery Department for the past 33 years, Jeffrey Landercasper, MD, has been continuously recognized by his patients and his peers for his dedication and patientcentered care. It should come as no surprise, then, that even as this physician transitions from surgical practice to a new role as a full-time breast cancer researcher, his focus on patients has not wavered. Despite his roots in general surgery, since 2010, Dr. Landercasper has cared primarily for patients with breast or skin cancers, but he has also been involved in clinical research for over a decade. In 2014, proceeds from Gundersen Medical Foundation s annual Steppin Out in Pink breast cancer walk made it possible for the Foundation to fund a position for a full-time research physician at the Norma J. Vinger Center for Breast Care. The position is a good fit for Dr. Landercasper, whose career has been marked by his attention to and aptitude for continuous improvement and medical advancements. My new role will allow me to devote more time and attention to local, regional and national collaborative research projects, all aimed at improving patient care, he explains. 2 GUNDERSEN MEDICAL FOUNDATION

Opportunities to know better In broad terms, research tends to be divided into two categories, both of which are actively supported by the Foundation: basic science research and clinical outcomes research. Basic science research is long-term and labbased; researchers study diseases on the molecular, cellular and genomic levels with the goal of eventually finding treatments or cures. Clinical outcomes research, which is Dr. Landercasper s focus, uses data to identify variables in the quality of patient care. Specifically, his research will focus on finding and correcting gaps in the quality of care received by breast cancer patients. There is a saying about clinical outcomes research, he shares, which is to measure is to know. The more we know, the more we can improve. When research shows that optimal care is not being reached, best practices can be identified and shared so that there is a reduction in the variability of care. When we reduce variability, we may also be reducing costs and improving the overall quality of care, says Dr. Landercasper. Even better, this process of identification of gaps in care quality, followed by corrective action, can result in near immediate improvements in patient care because some adjustments do not take long to implement. Gundersen has consistently used in-house data analysis to promote continuous quality improvement. However, Dr. Landercasper s new position, in combination with his ongoing leadership roles in several other professional organizations, makes it more likely that best practices for patient care can be identified and shared on a broader regional and national scale. When it comes to patient care, outcomes research can help us raise the bar, help us ensure that all patients no matter where they are get the highest quality of care, he explains. Award-winning research For nearly a decade, Dr. Landercasper has worked with the Quality Committees or held leadership positions in the National Consortium of Breast Centers and the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBS), professional organizations for surgeons who treat patients with breast disease. As part of his work, he developed more than 40 specific measurements for quality in breast care treatment. Some of these measures have been adopted by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services. In 2014, his research was recognized by the ASBS with its Scientific Impact Award. The submission was chosen from more than 300 entries, many of which were submitted by nationallyknown institutions considered to be leaders in breast cancer research. Dr. Landercasper s study specifically examined the reasons for secondary operations in breast cancer patients and identified actions that could eliminate up to 40 percent of repeat operations by surgeons simply following new recommended guidelines for best care. Elimination of extra operations will not only lead to cost savings for patients, but also higher levels of satisfaction in patient care. When it comes to patient care, outcomes research can help us raise the bar, help us ensure that all patients no matter where they are get the highest quality of care. Staying patient-centered Although Dr. Landercasper is proud of his research and how it reflects on Gundersen, he will ultimately measure the success of his new position the same way he measured success as a surgeon: by the impact on patients. There was no area of surgical care that I did not enjoy. In fact, I don t think any surgeon has enjoyed his practice or teaching more than I have, he reflects. I will miss the personal satisfaction of providing the best care possible to my patients and their families. The satisfaction derived from fixing a traumatic injury or removing a cancerous growth that could harm a patient is irreplaceable, and it s hard to match the community spirit of a team of nurses, assistants, social workers, geneticists, students and residents all working together to help a patient in distress. However, he also believes that because of the Foundation and the many community members and organizations that support the Steppin Out in Pink event, the work he is doing now will allow him to ultimately improve the quality of WHERE GENEROSITY CHANGES LIVES 3

care for breast cancer patients on a more national level. Just recently, he was asked to lead a national workshop to improve the quality of breast conserving surgery for patients with breast cancer. The workshop will include breast cancer surgical specialists from all areas of the U.S., as well as non-surgical breast cancer specialists. I will miss my surgical practice, he admits, but I now have the opportunity to help more patients than I ever could reach as a surgeon. I ve always believed that every patient deserves world-class care. u Above: Dr. Landercasper at Steppin Out in Pink. Right: The Landercaspers farm near La Crescent, Minnesota. Lessons from his rural roots While most elementary-age school children dream of a different career every other month or so, Jeffrey Landercasper, MD, locked in his career choice early on. I knew before I was even 10 years old that I wanted to be a doctor, he remembers, and I never really thought of being anything else. Though he does not recall for certain why he settled so early on a career in medicine, Dr. Landercasper enjoys talking up the influence of his rural roots, attributing much of his success as a physician to the lessons he learned from his hard-working, altruistic parents and his inventive country school teachers. He grew up in a rural community in Dawson County, Neb., where the cattle outnumbered the people about five-to-one. His grandparents homesteaded and lived on the farm he grew up on, but his parents operated the farm during his youth. Since the family was seven miles from the nearest small town, he and his brother attended school in a nearby one-room country schoolhouse. Though the building didn t offer indoor plumbing, it did feature outstanding teachers and small class sizes no more than six students, grades K-8, all learning in the same room. In a one-room schoolhouse, often with no one else in the same grade, students had to be accountable. I knew assignments had to be completed and lessons had to be learned; the teacher wouldn t be asking questions of anyone but me. There was no place to hide. They always knew who was misbehaving, too, he recalls, smiling. The school schedule was more flexible compared to most other schools. During harvest, sometimes students could be excused to help work on the farm. With one teacher creating lesson plans for multiple grades, students necessarily developed independent study skills a practicality that suited Dr. Landercasper perfectly. Scholarship is a personal responsibility, he shares. For me, the best method of learning was to identify a goal, then learn about a topic, unsupervised. I have used this same method nearly every day for three decades of patient care. I never stopped reading the literature after passing board examinations. The purpose of learning, for me, was to provide optimal patient care, so it was a rare day that I thought I knew everything I could know about a patient s condition. I read just as much and as often in my last year as my first. Dr. Landercasper eventually left Dawson County to attend college at the University of Denver and medical school at the University of Colorado. He came to Gundersen Health System in His rural influences have stayed with him and have been passed down to the next generation. In 1976, he married his wife, Betty, who is a large-animal veterinarian. The two of them live on a farm near La Crescent, Minn., raising livestock and growing grass and alfalfa hay. Their oldest son, Samuel, works in quality improvement for the Department of Health and Human Services in Colorado, and their younger son, Christopher, is an organic farmer specializing in organic heirloom tomatoes in California. u 4 GUNDERSEN MEDICAL FOUNDATION

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Meet Board Member: Mary Jo Werner Mary Jo Werner, JD, CPA, CFF, a partner at Wipfli LLP, has had a connection to Gundersen Medical Foundation for 25 years. She is currently serving her third term on the Foundation s Board of Directors and says she admires the organization s community-centered philosophy of leadership, as well as its patient-centered care. I have great respect and admiration for the Gundersen family, starting with Dr. Adolf L. Gundersen. He was not only a person of great character, says Mary Jo, but he helped encourage others to reach their full potential. He was also a great problem solver. That kind of leadership spoke to Mary Jo, but her personal experiences with patient care impressed her, too: Another, more personal, reason I wanted to serve on the Board was in gratitude for what Gundersen did for my now husband, Shawn Werner. Shawn and his family were in a house fire in January 1996, and he lost his youngest daughter and first wife. He was severely burned in the fire. Gundersen employees were there to assist him, working with Shawn to rehabilitate him from the damages caused by the fire. I am forever grateful to them. After a decades-long connection, Mary Jo cites countless examples of this type of patient-centered and community-centered perspective. Gundersen encourages collaboration and leads by example, she explains. The organization operates in a culture that encourages a positive attitude and teamwork. I am drawn to people and organizations that work together for a common goal. u Gundersen medical foundation Board of Directors Johnny C. Brevik Manager, Marketing Services Logistics Health, Inc. 8 For me, success cannot be measured in the number of dollars raised, but rather in the number of needs met. ~ Phil Schumacher, acfre, CFRE Gundersen Medical Foundation s retiring Executive Director of Development, Phil Schumacher, plans to spend more time on hobbies, volunteering, and traveling with wife his wife, Becky. A legacy of gratitude When Phil Schumacher, ACFRE, CFRE, joined the Gundersen Medical Foundation as the Executive Director of Development more than two decades ago, he was inspired by the leaders who had come before him. He remembers in detail a conversation he had with Dr. Adolf Gundersen who reminded the new director that saying thank you would be the most important part of his job. That lesson stayed with Phil and helped shape him both as a professional and as a person. As Phil prepares to retire on July 15, 2015, he is quick to point out the many others who have contributed to his success. However, those who have worked closely with him recognize that it s his own unique qualities the professional expertise and the sincere desire to help others that will be part of the outgoing director s legacy. Setting the standard There are few others in the fundraising field who are so well-respected. Phil has been a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) since 1986 and served on the board as the past vice chair of member services and treasurer. He is also the current chair for Certified Fund Raising Executive International and is one of only 102 people in the world to be certified as an Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive, the highest credential possible for the field. He is the consummate professional in his field, says Dr. Mark Connelly, retired chairman of Gundersen Medical Foundation. He is a sought-after lecturer on a national and international basis for his expertise on philanthropy and 6 GUNDERSEN MEDICAL FOUNDATION

development. We are blessed to have had him with us for more than twenty years as a trusted professional and a role model. The measure of success Perhaps even more impressive than credentials, though, are his accomplishments. The Foundation s Chief Development Officer, Robyn Tanke, shares that under Phil s leadership in 2002, the Home for Hope Capital Campaign reached its goal of $11 million to build a new cancer center. At that time, it was one of the largest capital campaigns to occur in the La Crosse area. These funds were raised over a threeyear period from more than 11,000 benefactors in the region. That success was repeated during the most recent Campus Renewal Campaign. Along with several Foundation and Health System staff, Phil worked with volunteers to raise more than $45 million in philanthropic support for the Gundersen Health System s new Hospital and Behavioral Health Facility, with 14 individuals or organizations making gifts of $1 million or more in support of this historic initiative. The success of these projects is a testament to Phil s leadership and experience, shares Tanke. When it comes to measuring success, though, Phil offers a different perspective. For me, success cannot be measured by the number of dollars raised, but rather in the number of needs met. I ve been privileged to meet a lot of giving people many of them grateful patients who feel they were well cared for along with hundreds of other generous donors. Through their gifts, the Foundation has been able to support children, improve patient care, educate doctors, fund research and improve our facilities. We could not support all of these programs without philanthropy. Putting people first Though Phil is highly respected for his experience and knowledge, the colleagues and donors with whom he has worked recognize other characteristics set him apart. There are many traits that make Phil unique: he is sincere, intuitive and thoughtful. He also has a great sense of humor, offers Tanke. Most importantly, though, he cares about people as individuals. Phil makes people feel special because he is genuinely interested in them and in helping others achieve their goals. Betty Zane Kabara is a longtime supporter of Gundersen Health System who has experienced Phil s care for others first-hand. In 2008, Betty and her late husband, Dr. Jon Kabara, made a gift of $1 million to establish the Kabara Cancer Research Institute. As the couple furthered their dream of aiding in the fight against cancer, they worked closely with Phil to make the donation possible. There are not enough words to describe the man that Phil Schumacher is, says Kabara. He is professional in every way, always keeping me informed and paying attention to the details but he also adds a personal touch. Over the past few years, Betty has continued to support cancer research through additional donations for research and lab equipment. Phil has become a great friend, she adds. He has been there for me and my husband even during times of illness and has provided comfort and support. There are so many qualities that set him apart and make him the successful person he is. An extended family Betty s statements illustrate what his colleagues in the Foundation have witnessed people and relationships are what Phil values most. When the hospital and medical Foundations merged in 1997, we brought together two very distinct cultures and staff with different personalities, he remembers. However, it didn t take long to learn how to not only play nice in the sandbox, but to become an effective team. With respect came admiration and then friendship. As we added people to our team, the sense of friendship and family has grown. Today, my colleagues are my friends, and they are definitely part of my extended family. That won t change as I retire, and I plan to stay connected to Gundersen wherever I can help. That knowledge makes it easier for the Foundation family to accept the upcoming retirement. As Phil prepares to spend more time traveling with his wife, Becky, and enjoying other hobbies, his colleagues are preparing to carry on the director s legacy. Phil has been such a great mentor, says Tanke. We have all learned through his example. We will miss him, but it s a testament to his leadership that he s leaving the Foundation in such a great position. u WHERE GENEROSITY CHANGES LIVES 7

A Tangible Reminder that Generosity Changes Lives Gundersen Health System opened its new Hospital to patients in January One year after its opening, the Hospital stands as a tangible reminder of the difference generosity can make on individual lives and on a community. It also represents the kind of patient-centered, technologically advanced care that places Gundersen among top health systems in the United States. A project like this could not be successful without visionary leadership, community support, dedicated staff and volunteers and a lot of collaboration. Because funding for this project came from a variety of sources, including support from Gundersen Medical Foundation, the Hospital is a prime example of the difference generosity can make on individuals today, and for generations to come. Impact on Patient Care What matters to patients is Gundersen s focus. In this new facility, patients experience top-notch care in a more private, healing environment. These experiences are shared by Gundersen staff. I truly believe that environment is one of the most crucial pieces to the healing of our patients and families. Our move to the new space has had quite the impact on many of the patients that I have taken care of. Whether it s a Hospice patient or one who is completely independent and ambulatory, the natural lighting (especially on a sunny day) takes immediate effect on my patients. ~ Courtney Oldenburg, BSN, RN, Medical and Oncology Unit Many of my Short Stay overnight patients used to share hospital rooms, and they don t have to anymore. We have individual Neonatal Intensive Care Unit rooms now, so parents can sleep right next to their baby and have private conversations with their care team. These are amazingly big improvements. ~ Deb Simon, MD, Obstetrics and Gynecology We are often working on very personal issues using a bathroom, getting dressed, taking a shower things you as a patient do not want to do in front of other therapists or a roommate. To be able to have private rooms with enough space for equipment a patient needs, makes it so much easier to provide the comfort and patient care they all deserve. ~ Nicole Bujnowski, Occupational Therapist 8 GUNDERSEN MEDICAL FOUNDATION

Impact on Community Gundersen s Hospital was designed to be a tool for exceptional patient care and a symbol of pride for a region that values innovation, continuous improvement and the environment. In July, I transferred to the RN role up on Level 6 Surgical. It is so cool seeing what our new Hospital has to offer for a new nurse. The technology alone is incredible! The extra space and the equipment on hand make caring for patients easier and more efficient. Working in the new Hospital has really made a difference being a new nurse! ~ Karen Slack, RN, Surgical-Digestive It was always a challenge during robotic surgery, in the old operating rooms, to manipulate the robot in the right position. Now that we have bigger rooms, I don t have to worry about that. It s the simple things that you don t think about until you have a nice, big, wide space available. ~ Deb Simon, MD, Obstetrics and Gynecology My husband was diagnosed with cancer in April and continued to have multiple complications. We found ourselves in five different levels in the Hospital and cannot express how the beautiful environment aided in the healing process the walk-in shower, GetWell Network, the beautiful views, the outdoor patio, the healing garden, the private discharge I could go on and on about the building itself. But the most wonderful part about the experience has been the people who work here. I am so proud to say I work at a place that really treats a patient as a person. Impact on Employees The environment inside the Hospital was designed to promote health and well-being. Every part of the design, function and aesthetics was planned to promote the best in patient care, and allows physicians and staff to feel proud of the environment in which they work. Every single day I come to work and think, Man, this is not an ICU! It is so surreal to see the bluffs, beautiful sky, weather changes everything here in the new Hospital. If nothing else, it s a mental break for me and the patients to just look out and enjoy the view together! I am a nature person and love to take it all in! It keeps my heart light in the darkest of situations, and I think patients can feel that, too. ~ Gabby Hansen, RN, Critical Care Working at the front desk, I love seeing people s reactions when they enter the Hospital lobby. They are always in such awe. Whether it s a patient, visitor or an employee stopping by, I am told time and time again what a healing atmosphere the new Hospital is. ~ Allyse Oliver, Information Desk Receptionist, Service Excellence Staff and patients have commented on the feeling of serenity and peacefulness that our space provides. With the private rooms and bathrooms, it is healing and comfortable. The confidentiality has been frequently noted by both the patients and staff. ~ Diane Olson, RN, Clinical Manager, Pre-op and Recovery ~ Sue La Crosse, Quality Improvement Specialist, Service Excellence WHERE GENEROSITY CHANGES LIVES 9

Dr. Jeff and Sandy Thompson have always approached their giving as a team A PAIR OF INDEPENDENT THINKING, HARD-WORKING FOLKS As longtime supporters of Gundersen Medical Foundation, Dr. Jeff and Sandy Thompson believe in the capacity of individuals and organizations to do more than one thing and do it really well. Before he became CEO of Gundersen Health System in 2001, before he became executive vice president in 1995, and before he became a member of the Gundersen Clinic Board in 1992, Jeff Thompson, MD, was a young physician who, along with his wife Sandy, supported Gundersen Medical Foundation. Together, they made their first gift in the spring of 1985, a multi-year pledge to the hospital building fund. At the time, they had only recently moved to La Crosse, were parents to two small children, and counted their education as their sole assets (Sandy as a surgical ICU nurse, Jeff as a neonatologist). With that first gift they began what has become 30 consecutive years of giving to the Foundation. Among their hundreds of recorded gifts was one of the earliest (and major) gifts to 10 GUNDERSEN MEDICAL FOUNDATION

the Campus Renewal Campaign that culminated with the opening of the new Hospital. Earlier this year, Dr. Thompson announced he would be stepping down from his executive leadership role (see page 12). Before that transition, he and Sandy agreed to reflect on their long relationship with the Foundation and the impact of philanthropy at Gundersen Health System. On their role models in philanthropy Having both grown up in small communities (Jeff in Platteville, Wisconsin; Sandy in Princeton, Illinois), it s not surprising that their biggest inspirations were close to home. For Sandy, it was her grandmothers. She recalls how Mom and Dad didn t have a lot of money or free time while running a dairy farm, so we learned a lot from my grandmas. They were great caretakers of the elderly in their community; I remember visiting nursing homes with them and attending every funeral so nobody would ever be there by themselves. These were working grandmas who were generous with their time and money, which was just as limited as anybody else s. Jeff gives credit to his mother for providing his earliest impression of generosity without agenda. My mom worked as a church secretary. She was very thoughtful about people in the community and took a genuinely caring interest. It was just natural that if they had a problem, it was her problem. If I brought home a hungry kid from school who was even more ragged than me, that kid ate with us. She made a huge impact in the lives of many people by being so gracious and so caring. On forming their own approach to philanthropy It stems from their mutual belief that philanthropy is about more than giving money to a cause, it s about the essential act of caring and wanting to make a difference. Early in our marriage when I was in my residency, I was working really long hours, making maybe $14,000 a year, recalls Jeff. We didn t save a lot, but we were doing fine and we both understood there would be many opportunities to help contribute to our community, so our approach was to start small and give support as we were able. As their young family settled into La Crosse and Sandy became involved in their children s schools, their church council and other organizations, she discovered the nice thing about this community is you know where your gift is going. If you give to the Salvation Army, you know who the captain is. From the very beginning, they approached their giving as a team. Sandy cares about everyone, and I tend to pay attention to everything at the same time, says Jeff. They both feel strongly that as the capacity to make a difference increases, so does the responsibility. On what inspires the depth and breadth of their giving For the Thompsons, everything is connected. Our feeling is that communities are built by multiple initiatives in multiple directions, says Jeff. So to single out a piece The Thompsons both feel strongly that as the capacity to make a difference increases, so does the responsibility. [to support] never fit with us because in our view it all ties together. It isn t enough to have a good educational system if the streets aren t safe and kids are going hungry. It isn t enough to have a great healthcare system if there s no safety net when people s finances, food or housing fall apart. That perspective has informed his leadership style, where we ve had the chance to demonstrate to the community that Gundersen takes responsibility for more than our sick patients. We want to make things better and connect with our community. We teach and we conduct research. We don t pollute the environment or spend money for energy if we can produce it here. We believe we should respect the choices seniors make about their end-of-life care. So I don t feel that an organization can only do one thing at a time when Gundersen is proof that you can do more than one thing and do it really, really well. That thinking is reflected in the diversity of the Thompsons support for the Foundation over the past 30 years. From capital campaigns WHERE GENEROSITY CHANGES LIVES 11

to Children s Miracle Network Hospitals, to special events, patient programs, equipment acquisitions and everything in between, There is no one Foundation program that s the be-all and end-all for us personally, says Sandy. There are many. On how the Foundation has evolved over 30 years For Sandy, it s the increased visibility and involvement in the community. She points to Global Partners and Steppin Out in Pink as great examples of how the Foundation is providing opportunities outside the walls that connect Gundersen staff with the community in a shared effort to make things better and stronger for everybody. That extended responsibility for the health and well-being of community as a whole can also be seen in the Foundation s advanced care planning and bereavement programs. The growth and expansion of Gundersen s medical education program is something Jeff is proud of, since it reflects the commitment of the entire System as well as the Foundation. However, he sees the most important development as something broader, and it has to do with how the nature of fundraising is changing. Our Foundation is focusing on really connecting with people who want to be a part of the mission based on what s important to In his future, Dr. Thompson sees more time for traveling with Sandy and their family. them, and then finding a way to make that happen. Whether it s through education or research or whatever the individual feels strongly about, connecting their generosity to the work is what brings people joy and a deep satisfaction that goes way beyond the funding part. u I have loved leading this organization. After guiding Gundersen Health System through significant periods of growth, innovation and change, CEO Jeff Thompson, MD, is stepping down from his executive leadership role this year. He announced his intent in January, saying, The timing is right for Gundersen, right for the community and right for me personally. I think the time to step down is when we have strength, momentum and staff to continue to do great work. To ensure a smooth transition for his successor, Dr. Thompson has continued to serve as CEO while he and a committee of Gundersen s governing boards conduct their search for the organization s next leader. It is expected their selection could be announced as early as June. Dr. Thompson has emphasized that he is not retiring, I plan to continue to help Gundersen in any way I can, he says. In his future, he sees time for teaching, mentoring staff, enhancing our innovation efforts, working with the community, sustainability and global efforts, as well as writing, doing speaking engagements, and more traveling with Sandy and their family. I don t think boredom s going to be an issue, he smiles. As the end of his tenure as CEO approaches, Dr. Thompson readily admits to having mixed emotions. I ve loved leading this organization. It s a fantastic job. It s also a really hard job. Every day it means responsibility for hundreds of thousands of patients, 6,700 employees and a billion dollars of the community s money. You have to put your heart and soul into this job, but I m not so naïve to think that I m the only the person who can do it. One thing is clear: Dr. Thompson s leadership and vision have been a driving force behind Gundersen Health System s rise to national acclaim in the healthcare industry and beyond. His impact as CEO has been remarkable. Gundersen Health System Board Vice President Greg Prairie agrees: Dr. Thompson s countless contributions to Gundersen s success, his inspiration to an immensely dedicated, innovative and hardworking team of employees, and his drive to improve the health of the communities which Gundersen serves will be his lasting legacy. u 12 GUNDERSEN MEDICAL FOUNDATION

Leading by example < Dr. Ron Schneider an staff dinner in ed at a medical d wife, Michelle, pictur We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit. - Aristotle Director of Gundersen Medical Foundation s Oral and Maxillofacial residency program, Ron Schneider, DDS, passed away on January 2, 2015, due to cardiac complications. Dr. Schneider was a dedicated physician and family man who had recently shared with his wife, Michelle, that he was happy with every aspect of his life. Dr. Schneider s friends and colleagues recognized him as a family man who enjoyed spending time with his wife and their blended family, as well as a sports enthusiast. In college, he co-captained the lacrosse team at Penn State University and later became a coach. Several years ago, he also completed an Ironman triathlon. 18 G U N D E R S E N M E D I C AL FO U N DAT I O N Aside from his love of family, Dr. Schneider will be remembered for his love of teaching. For the nearly seven years that he worked at Gundersen Health System, this physician and educator influenced many residents by pushing them to achieve excellence and through leading by example. The loss of Dr. Ron Schneider, my friend and colleague, was quite a blow to us all. He left a big hole in our residency program and to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) community as a whole. He contributed to the specialty in a way few could. He had insight and a keen sense of how to teach the vast scope of OMS to so many over the years. He will be missed and remembered by those of us who were close to him and those whose lives he touched, shares Dr. Thomas MacKenzie, program director and section chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency. u

Gundersen Medical Foundation Children s Miracle Network Hospitals The Miracle Connection Dr. J. Michael and Vicki Hartigan Passion beyond profession Dr. J. Michael and Vicki Hartigan have served for years as passionate advocates for children with a variety of healthcare needs, which is why they were honored as the King and Queen of the Children s Miracle Network Hospitals 7th Annual Emerald Ball. Each year, the Emerald Ball celebrates the children and families whose lives have been positively impacted by CMN Hospitals, a service of the Gundersen Medical Foundation. As a pediatrician and Gundersen Health System s first neonatologist, Dr. Hartigan was a leader in the establishment of Gundersen s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). He was also an early supporter of bringing CMN Hospitals to Gundersen. At the same time, his wife, Vicki, was a respiratory therapist in the ICU. For these healthcare professionals, caring for sick children was more than a job it was a passion. Once Gundersen was established as a CMN Hospital in 1986, the Hartigans donated their time and provided financial support to help the organization grow. Vicki and I worked on the telethon phone banks for many years. Vicki was a devoted participant in many softball tournament fundraisers, too, Dr. Hartigan says. Later, I served on the committee deciding how to spend the money raised to best help kids in our area. The Hartigans are truly an example of how generosity in its many forms changes lives. u The staff of Children s Miracle Network Hospitals would like to thank our friends and community partners for their generous support of this year s Emerald Ball! 30 Clinical Research Coordinator Sandy Wee, CCRP, is dedicated to helping fight cancer by finding new and improved treatments. Children s Miracle Network Hospitals Top-notch research for pediatric patients It s difficult to think of any news that would be harder to cope with than a child s diagnosis of cancer but knowing that child has access to the newest advancements in cancer treatments right here in our region is reassuring. treatments for pediatric cancers of the central nervous system, blood, bone marrow and lymphatic systems. Treatment trials may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or some combination. That s why charitable gifts made to Children s Miracle Network Hospitals, a service of Gundersen Medical Foundation, make such an impact. Local donations help fund cuttingedge pediatric research, such as the trials being conducted by Sandy Wee, CCRP, clinical research coordinator in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Department. Because Gundersen Health System is part of the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center, there is full access to the Children s Oncology Group, the only cooperative clinical trials organization for children, adolescents and young adults in the United States. Sandy believes the ability to share in research taking place on a national level is important. The funding we receive for our program allows patients in our area to have access to clinical trials that offer the same highquality cancer care that s available at other major institutions around the country, she says. Therefore, local patients can remain in our region to get state-of-the-art care. Clinical trials help researchers understand more about how cancers grow and spread. They can also help researchers understand how cancer cells develop resistance to current treatment methods. The trials that are in progress today study various I enjoy the daily challenges of my job, as well as the opportunities to work with new advances in cancer treatment, shares Wee. But there is nothing like seeing a critically ill patient arrive at our facility for treatment and be in remission after only a few weeks of therapy or, even better, when former patients return healthy many years after their treatments have ended. Thanks to the generous donations made to CMN Hospitals, Gundersen is able to provide the very best care to sick children from our area who need it the most. u 28 CHILDREN S MIRACLE NETWORK HOSPITALS

Partners in Pediatric Safety In 2014, Tri-State Ambulance, Inc., and Tri-State Regional, Inc., received a grant from Children s Miracle Network Hospitals that will go a long way to helping first responders provide the best care to our region s tiniest patients. In the past, first responders had to rely on traditional car seats to transport sick or injured children. According to Tri-State s Clinical Operations Supervisor Daren Wendel, this system was not ideal either for patients or for first responders. Standard car seats are not designed for use in an ambulance, says Wendel. They are not designed to connect to a stretcher, and they do not allow for children to lie down. Depending on the child s size and injuries, the car seats could pose a variety of restrictions. Injury sites were not always easy to reach, and some procedures, such as introducing IVs, were sometimes awkward. Aside from impacting patient access, standard car seats were not always practical, either. Bulky car seats (often in various sizes) would take up precious space inside the The Pedi-Mate system helps Tri-State s first responders transport children safely. ambulance, so they typically had to be stored in outside compartments. The car seats also posed a financial challenge because they had to be replaced often to meet changing state regulations. The answer to all of these challenges was a relatively new transport system called Pedi-Mate. Pedi-Mates have a fully-adjusting, five-point harness system that straps on to an adult-sized stretcher and securely holds children between 10 and 40 pounds. The system allows children to be transported safely while they are sitting upright or lying down, whatever makes the most sense in each case. Using a piece of equipment that is purpose-based designed specifically for ambulance use gives us confidence that we can continue to provide the best care possible, shares Wendel. The harness system is also convenient because it is made of an easy-to-clean, nontoxic vinyl, rolls up easily for storage, and lasts five years. A grant from Children s Miracle Network Hospitals allowed Tri-State to purchase this new tool sooner than they would have been able to otherwise. As of November 2014, each of Tri-State s 20 ambulances has been equipped with a Pedi-Mate system, which means that our region s pediatric patients will receive the best care. u Children s Miracle Network Hospitals WHERE GENEROSITY CREATES MIRACLES 29

Happenings An app that helps save lives The Gundersen Medical Foundation recently partnered with Tri-State Ambulance, Inc., to provide funding to support the acquisition of the PulsePoint app a lifesaving piece of technology that unites victims of cardiac distress with nearby citizens trained to administer CPR. According to the American Heart Association, a victim of cardiac arrest has just five to six minutes before brain death can occur, shares Tri-State s Executive Director Tom Tornstrom. The overall national survival rate of cardiac arrest (out of hospital) is lower than 10 percent. However, with bystander intervention, survival rates double or triple. Currently, the app works in La Crosse County when citizens who are trained in CPR download the app and properly adjust the settings to receive notifications. When an emergency call comes in to Gundersen s dispatch center that a person is experiencing cardiac distress in a public location, the PulsePoint app will notify all appholders within a quarter-mile radius of the victim. The app will zoom in on a map to allow an app-holder acting as a Good Samaritan to locate the victim and begin CPR. App-holders can also get information to help locate the nearest Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to aid in helping treat the sudden cardiac arrest. Tri-State already has some of the best cardiac arrest outcomes in the nation, but we are hoping to further improve on those numbers with the PulsePoint app, shares Tornstrom, who knows that every minute counts when it comes to saving lives. The app has been available since November 2014 and has already been downloaded by 886 people in our region. To download the app, users should visit the itunes App Store or Android Play Store, download the app, and choose Gundersen Tri-State Ambulance. Partnering with Tri-State Ambulance, Inc. to provide the initial funding for this app, making our region the first in the Upper Midwest to offer this life-saving technology, is one more way that Gundersen Medical Foundation is able to achieve its mission of improving patient care. u 32 GUNDERSEN MEDICAL FOUNDATION
