2 Abstruct Business Performance Management System is a new trend. It is a useful systems to the companies with normal transaction systems. But how to design a BPM System, how to match the use s requirement and business situation? We need a systematic theoretic framework. Summarize the experience acquired from real system development process, is a possible way to answer this question. 2

3 Why BPM is important? Challenge of delivering consistent and improved performance regardless of company size or structure, while maintaining investor confidence The need to align the organization with goals, objectives and strategy, including managing business drivers Pressure to more effectively manage costs, improve profitability and increase visibility into performance and information Excessive time is spent consolidating and validating data, not allowing time to provide insight, analysis, scenario planning and judgment Corporate planning, functional groups, service organizations and business units utilize diverse processes that are not fully integrated, resulting in labor intensive efforts 3

4 A case of BPM system development A Chinese television media group considered to construct a BPM system. The group has 15 business centers, 4 subordinate organizations, and 5 business companies, there are all about 60 divisions in this group with more than 10,000 employees. Several patterns of ownership are existed in this group and the business process is also quite complex. 4

5 Current Information Management situation They has over 20 years experiences for using Information Systems, Now there are several systems to deal with all routine information including finance, facilities, human resource and television program etc. Though It has multi-information Systems and mass data store, but the range of IS using is confined to their routing business. 5

6 The vision of the BPM project New System will help the executives of group in four basic process: Strategizing, planning monitoring and adjusting/action. To this media group, the IS should give a systematic information to reflect the situation and change of Industry, environment, and the competitive. Using indexes, data and model to depict the Input- Output situation of every channel, program and whole station, and help the use to do multi-dimensional analysis. 6

7 The 5 Steps in System Analysis Define the users of the System and their working Style of the System. Investigate the Organization, Business process and Data store, to understand the current information processes and the relationship in all data. Collect all related performance factors with Top-down methods, and define all of data sources for these factors. Design the Performance measure indexes, and discuss them with the people who concerned the measuring business. Then translate them into measurable KPIs. Design a set of models for KPI manipulation, and select appreciate presentation form. 7

8 Some lessons we learned The most important things occurred in front phases of project, and in performance indexes design and data analysis. Therefore, the team of project should allocate the resources and all the tasks appropriately, and they must be familiar the structure of organization, business, and the user of the system during the period. Then, the team should communicate with every key user in important divisions, and collect all information concerning their performance. These information is the basis for designing the KPI and models. All models and indexes should be connected with detail data items, it should investigate all data sources from different systems, and draw the relationship chart from them. 8
