Outline SEER for IT brief overview Estimation Features Demonstration Reporting with SEER for IT Inside SEER for IT
SEER for IT: Providing Credible Estimates, Achievable Plans = Project Success SEER IT helps you estimate the effort and cost of IT projects and their ongoing support SEER IT helps you build project plans SEER IT has parametric estimation capability that helps you objectively estimate costs SEER IT gives a consistent framework for estimating and planning IT projects SEER IT helps you understand projects cost drivers SEER IT will get you to a realistic plan, increasing the probability of project success
What Can You Estimate with SEER IT SEER for Information Technology Hardware rollout Software rollout 3 rd party licenses Network Support Staffing Services Data Infrastructure Helpdesk Training
Types of Projects New deployments Upgrades Maintenance Support Decommissioning Estimate can be a combination of the above
SEER IT Provides Total Costs Of IT Systems & Support IT Infrastructure Project Support IT Services
SEER for IT Planning & Estimation SEER for IT Content Description Infrastructure - Initial purchase and ongoing maintenance agreements for hardware and software assets Development Engineering, design and planning of IT systems and applications. Includes software development and maintenance Deployment Installation, setup and check out of hardware, installation & distributing applications Operations Ongoing effort to support IT operations including data centers, network, user services, etc. Business Support - Activity that directly supports specific business functions such as training, help desk and content management Note: Management is included as a part of all activity Development Infrastructure Business Support Operations Deployment
Comprehensive life cycle estimates SEER for IT covers all components of TCO Labour and material costs Project and ongoing support Plus schedule estimates giving time phased estimates
Labour categories or roles SEER IT allocates estimates into labour categories or roles Management Analyst Architect Software Development Technician Test/QA Documentation Training Administrator Operator Support Each category has a labour rate for both in-house and contracted effort
SEER for IT report examples
Deconstructing a project with SEER for IT SEER IT evaluates and estimates projects based on key phases Analysis. Evaluation of requirements and determination of general approaches. Design. Detailed design of systems to be built including drawings, schematics and engineering studies. Procurement. Time and cost for purchased goods and services. Construction. Building of systems including unique setup efforts. Testing. Test and checkout of systems being deployed. Training. Development of user documentation, courseware and training activities. Distribution. Setups and installation of hardware and software for end users. Ongoing Support. The effort required to maintain and support the systems once operational. SEER IT allows you to estimate any or all of these phases
SEER for IT Functional Process models WBS Elements Process Models provide logical groupings of IT activities Each process model has a set of inputs, calculations and outputs An IT project will typically use a combination of WBS elements Purchased Hardware Purchased Software Application Development Training Service Desk Software/Database Services End User Services Infrastructure Services User Documentation Facilities Additional Items elements that estimate labor elements for labour or purchased costs
SEER for IT Phases SEER IT estimates are allocated into general phases of an IT project or initiative
Demonstration Departmental Reporting Application Rollout Implementation of reporting package with custom web portal development for department of users Technolgies used: Dell Blade server Websphere AS Oracle DBMS Standard desktops Existing network Estimate to include initial development, training and rollout only; i.e. no ongoing support
SEER for IT Project Layout
1 WBS Element Menu Insert WBS elements by clicking on an element choice (or from the edit menu or toolbar) Projects generally have multiple elements Some elements estimate labour Software/Database Services Facilities End User Services Service Desk Infrastructure Services Training Architecture/Design Documentation Some elements allow you to enter labour or purchased costs Purchased Hardware Purchased Software Application Development Additional Items
2- Work Breakdown Structure Elements can be organized in any way Choose from many element types to create a project WBS
3 - Parameters Each element has a set of parameters used to drive calculations Most parameters are expressed as least, likely and most inputs Each parameter can be annotated to keep track of the assumption behind the input
4 Reports and charts Choose from several report and chart types to view results The reports displayed will be for the selected WBS element If the selected element is a rollup, the result will be a summary figure
SEER for IT Example Navigate estimate elements in the WBS Review and enter estimation inputs View and evaluate results
Knowledge Bases Allow Quick Estimate Setup Knowledge bases set default parameter values based on the selected attributes Knowledge bases are configurable
Purchased items Configurable database for storing purchased items cost for hardware, software and even labour tasks
Additional Items Although SEER for IT covers a wide range of IT processes, there is always something not covered Additional items allows you to enter any pass-through costs
Scenarios Pre-configured WBS structures may be stored as a scenario Scenarios may be configured with options for the user to select which elements to include
Tailoring SEER for IT Terminology may be tailored to fit your company culture Activities Roles WBS element names Labour types Estimate categories standard name custom name
Reporting Results are reported For each WBS element At any rollup or summary level Outputs may also be exported to support nonstandard formats
SEER-IT reports and charts
SEER-IT report examples Summary Reports Quick Estimate - Quick view of total costs, allows trades against references, configurable Labour Detail - Detailed breakout of labour details showing hours and cost for each discipline and in-house vs. contractor hours Phased Activity - Outlines labour hours, material cost and total cost by activity Time Phased Cost by Fiscal Year - Provides cost by month or year Activity by Month - Shows the project labour hours and ongoing support labour hours for each activity by calendar month Labour Category by Month - Shows the project and ongoing support labour hours or cost for each labour category by calendar month Monte Carlo (Risk) Reports Project Risk Shows project labour, schedule or cost risk for different confidence levels Ongoing Support Risk shows ongoing support labour, schedule or cost risk for different confidence levels
Report preview, print and export
Inside SEER-IT Logic SEER-IT estimates labour associated with IT projects Effort is estimated for each phase Phases are sometimes broken down into sub-tasks and estimated at that level Each phase (or sub-task) has an effort estimating relationship, typically of the form: EffortTask k = pi StdTime i StdTime is a nominal time found in the standards database (e.g. Hours to set up a server) p i are adjustment factors used to adjust the nominal time to the estimate s specific scenario (e.g. experience level, reliability level) k

Infrastructure Services
Training
Software/Database Services
Facilities
More on the standards database The standards database gives an opportunity to customize/calibrate SEER-IT Only administrators will have access to this database Sample tables
Allocating effort into roles Each phase is allocated into labour categories using a configurable table Some phases are allocated at the sub-task level
Accounting for In-house vs. Contractor SEER IT Economic Factor inputs allow you to specify the percent of in-house labour and contractor labour rates:
