The environment surrounding children and their families is under severe transformation due to the rapidly decreasing number of children in society. Adults who have no experience in associating with small children will increase in number in the near future. The lack of medical care for children is also a cause for serious concern, together with the cut in budget for medical expenses and the slow reaction of the government to the aging society, and the rapid development of medical technique in general. The contents depicted in this course are based on caring for children and the family, related social systems, and policy making. CNS Course for Cancer Nursing Cancer nursing nurses with expert knowledge are expected to take active part in the general care of cancer patients and their families, as recent rapid progress in medical treatment of cancer makes it possible to increase the rate of recovery and survival of the cancer patients. Being aware of the social systems and policies related to cancer patients, great emphasis is laid on home care nursing of the patients who may hope to stay longer as long as possible in their familiar surroundings. Medical management and palliative care for the patients are also a focus. The Goals of Education As the clinical scene is full of complex elements in putting nursing theory into practice, the most essential point in the doctorate course is the acquisition of the ability to grasp the nature of problems in medical practice and the characteristics of nursing practice. This course will thus aim to develop competence in leading a nursing practice and study activities. Another aspect greatly emphasized is to build up skillful nursing directorship with the overall capacity to accomplish improvement and reform of the field of nursing. 1. Ability to lead the study of renovation and reformation of nursing practice from the deep understanding of complex elements in healthcare, medical treatment, and welfare institutions 2. Ability to clarify and solve problems in prefectural-level nursing practice in pubic nursing administrations and policy-making processes 3. Ability to deal with ethical problems from a technical study perspective in order to achieve recipient-oriented nursing 4. Ability to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in higher education institutes for the improvement and reformation of nursing practice Outline of Curriculum Major Subjects 1. Methodology in Integrated Practical Nursing Studies I/II The goals of nursing while exploring issues concerning health promotion, growth and development, and convalescence time based on the human life cycle are treated in I. Management of the conditions and surrounding environment in order to support families, communities, and general situations involving child-rearing, care, giving, and medical treatment are the focus in II. 2. Seminar on Integrated Practical Nursing Studies This special seminar attempts to inquire into the perspective for reformation of nursing practice based both on care-recipient demand and on basic skills as a teacher of nursing. This course consists of three classes: Nursing Administration and Policy, Nursing Ethics, and Nursing Education. The first one is on the reconsideration of concrete problems in prefectural policy making processes. Ethical issues in the medical field concerning the patient rights of the recipients are the central points of the second. The final class emphasizes the systematic method in exploring and teaching nursing practice. These classes require written work, which leads to supplementary treatises for the doctorate dissertation. 3. Dissertation Research on Integrated Practical Nursing Studies The students are required to select and decide their own topics, make research process plans and write a doctorate dissertation. Academic supervision is on an individual basis. Basic Subjects Three elective classes are provided in order to broaden perspective in the study of nursing practice. Methodology in Practical Teaching deals with pedagogical issues and methods in general society. Organization Management lays its emphasis on the characteristics of nursing service at health maintenance, medical, welfare, and care institutions. Basic skills in technical research activities are the main point in Inquiry into Health Care Needs
