Students will learn strategies necessary for writing and communicating effectively in English in technical and scientific profession through practices. Students will be required to write a short research paper and to give two presentations based on the paper. Course objectives 1. 3 2015/7/11 Business Model Development English / Japanese 0M Business Model Development School Graduate School of Engineering and Science(Master's Program) Course Common subjects Grade Semester Fall Semester Credit 2 hirano makoto Course content The purpose of engineering is to apply it to practical usage and establish business by using it. However, there is a big chasm between engineering invention and business innovation. To overcome the difficulty of bridging over the chasm between invention and innovation, we have to learn and train the manner of business planning and how to build a business model. This course provides the intensive training to image up how to make your research plan or business idea toward actual business creation or how to build a business itself. Basically, this class is designed for the students who are not familiar with management or business itself. For those students, the class leads to the process of planning actual business step by step. In this class, increasing global population, environmental pollution, resource shortage and so on as contemporary social issues are also discussed in the aspect of business creation. Course objectives 1. To understand some basic concepts of establishing business. 2. To understand the process of planning business and building business model. 3. To be able to write down the business model/plan of your idea or your research objectives. Class schedule 1. Introduction: what is business plan/model? Introducing the lecturer's personal business experience and talking about future perspective. <Home work before joining the class> Make clear what you want to learn in this class. 2. How to make a business by producing innovation. <Home work for the next class> Make your own business idea, or a business idea by using your researching technology or else. And make 5 10 pages slides for your presentation in the next class. 3. All Students will make a presentation on their business idea. By hearing the other students' presentation, everyone should make a comment on how to advance the idea by considering some other viewpoints. And all students will discuss which idea is most interesting and hopeful. 4. How to generate ideas and how to breed the idea. We will learn about KJ method by using cards to breed original idea. And also we will learn some other methodologies to advance idea. <Home work for the next class> Make slides on breeding your idea. 5. All students will make a presentation on how to breed the idea by using the methodologies that they have learned in the last class. We will discuss which methodology is effective in which situation, and how to select methodology to fit to the situation. 6. All students will make a presentation on how to make a profit by the business. We will sue the concept of break even point, fixed cost and variable cost in order to realize the business and to earn money. 8. Value network and business model. We will learn about the basic concept of value chain and the advanced concept of value network. <Home work> Reconsider what kind of value creation you can produce. And make slides to explain your value creation through your business or your research. 9. All students will make a presentation on their business regarding value chain or industrial architecture. We will think about positioning about the business, and the strategy in the real industry. 10. Marketing. We will learn about some basic concept of marketing and marketing research. The concept of "Insight marketing" will be introduced and discussed. <Home work> Reconsider what kind of market researching you have already done. And make slides on the result your marketing. 11. All students will make a presentation on the result of their marketing. And we will discuss what kind of marketing research will be suitable for some situation. Through discussion, we will obtain a new idea on marketing. 12. Business strategy, industrial architecture, organization characteristics. We will learn about some basic concepts of business and strategy. We also will learn about what kind of strategy is relevant in some situation. <Home work> Reconsider about business strategy, industrial architecture, organization characteristics on your business. And make slides for the next class. 13. All students will make a presentation on organization strategy of their thinking business. We will discuss about the effectiveness and the possibility of the other strategy and step by step we will close to the real business. 14. Talking about increasing global population, environmental pollution, resource shortage and so on. And some contemporary social issues are also discussed in the aspect of business creation. <Home work> Reconsider about your plan. Prepare the final presentation on your business plan/model. 15. All students will make a final presentation on their business plan. We will discuss about the possibility and thread for each business. And also we will review many basic concepts of business and management. Wrapping up the whole classes. The lectures are composed of two categories. The first part is visits to factories of Japanese companies. Students observe the production way and learn how technologies are managed in the factories. This year, in addition, an embarkation class in cooperation with Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology will be implemented. The second part is talks of engineering managers on technologies, products development, and business strategy of their companies. Course objectives 1. To understand the production way and technology management in the factories 2. To understand technologies and business strategy of the each company 3. 8 2015/7/11 Global Internship English / Japanese 0M Global Internship School Graduate School of Engineering and Science(Master's Program) Course Common subjects Grade Semester Spring and Fall Credit 2 nakayama chiaki murakami masato Course content Overseas experience is indispensable for becoming a researcher or engineer who can play an active role in international society. In this course, students independently plan technical training activities related to their research themes at overseas companies, universities, or public research institutes, and then submit their plans to the teacher of the course. Provided proposed plans are evaluated, students implement the overseas technical trainings according to their plans. SIT provides support for travel expenses and overseas living costs. After returning to Japan, students compile and submit a post report. And they present their activities to the teacher and other students. Course objectives 1. To enhance your expertise in the research field through the overseas training. 2. To gain meta national ability through overseas experiences. 3. To discuss with foreign engineers and researchers on your specific fields in English Class schedule 1. Introduction to the course: The procedure of the internship is explained by the teacher in charge of the course. 2. Planning of technical training activities related to their research themes at overseas companies or universities For the international students, technical trainings at Japanese companies or research institutes are acceptable. 3. Compilation and application of an overseas technical training proposal 4. Preparation for the internship The student should make arrangements for the internship by themselves. 5. Implementation of the internship: the first week The student should send a weekly report to the teacher. 6. Implementation of the internship: the second week The student should send a weekly report to the teacher. 7. And there should also be a consideration of the social significance of the fellow student s research theme. In this course, students write papers on their research themes focusing on the social contribution through the research. And they present papers in the class, and discuss with the teacher and other students. And then, they present papers at the intensive workshop held during the SEATUC symposium. Course objectives 1. To understand the background of the research topics and overlook the research field 2. To write a research paper focusing on the social significance of the research 3. To make an impressive presentation at the intensive workshop Class schedule 1. Introduction to the course. The outline of this course is explained by the teacher in charge of the course. 2. 12 2015/7/11 Management of Innovation English / Japanese 0M Management of Innovation School Graduate School of Engineering and Science(Master's Program) Course Common subjects Grade Semester Spring Semester Credit 2 hirano makoto Course content For realizing innovations for encouraging industries and economy, it is important to manage technologies, organization and business operation strategically. In this course, students learn processes of innovations and industry developments and how to produce innovation and how to build our thinking manner through class discussion. In this program, we will discuss many issues surrounding innovation, so that, students are requested to think by himself/herself on many issues and to make a presentation and discuss with each other in every class. It is somewhat tough, but it is very effective for students to increase their capability and knowledge. Each assignment theme and process of class will be somewhat flexibly changed along the students' status and interest. Another class titled "Managing Innovation" in Japanese is designed to learn some basic theories and doctrines on innovation. So that, if you can take that class first to obtain basic knowledge on innovation issues and secondly take this class in next year, you will get better understanding on innovation. Course objectives 1. To gain basic knowledge on innovation and make an idea on how to produce innovation. 2. To understand the relationship among product development, technology strategy, industrial architecture, managing enterprise, and society. 3. To understand the thinking manner on how to produce innovation by your research/idea. Class schedule 1. <Why Innovation?> To think about why innovation is needed for contemporary enterprises/businesses through our daily lives. To share the common issues such as severe enterprise competition, social disparity, lack of natural resources in globalization. 2. <Basic concepts for enterprise and it's function> Introducing definition of enterprise, and discussing about their stake holders. Discussing how to think about employees and human resource issues or organization issues. <Home work 1> 3. <Students' presentation and discussion> All students will discuss with some other members in a team on how they think about a case of Kurabouas as an assignement. Through discussing with others, we will recognize the significance of thiking way or philosophy. 4. <Relationship between enterprise and society> We will review there are many issues and many ways of thinking on our daily lives, particularly on enterprise and society. We will discuss these issues together, some philosophical issues and search a manner on how to think them. <Homework 2> 5. <Students' presentation and discussion> All students will make a presentation on the case of alternative issues that they picked up in their daily lives. We will discuss about what kind of thinking manner is relevant and how we can produce innovation. 6. <Value proposition and concept of innovation> Introducing some definitions of innovation and methodology on how to activate economics and enterprise. We will learn know how of logical thinking and how to utilize it. Many cases will be introduced and discussed regarding this issue. <Homework 4> 9. <Students' presentation and discussion> All students will discuss about how to produce innovation by using logical thinking manner. We will also use SWOT analysis and learn how it is effective. 10. <Breeding ideas and making insight> We will discuss about other manners on how to produce innovation. By using cards, we will make many hints for innovation. KJ method produced in Japan will be introduced. <Homework 5> 11. <Students' presentation and discussion> All students will discuss with other members in a team on how to breed idea of innovation. Each team will make a presentation about the result of their discussion. 12. <Changing a view point> Some quite different methodologies to produce innovation will be introduced. Changing a view point is very important manner. Some basic ideas on how to change a view point will be discussed in the class. <Homework 6> 13. <Students' presentation and discussion> All students will discuss about how to change a view poin on some cases. We will discuss many kinds of innovation through this process. We will also learn how to advance the idea through discussion. 14. <Reviewing whole discussions in the class> Taking a look at many issues discussed in the classes, and reviewing what we could learn through discussions. Wrapping up our discussions and thinking about the remained issues. <Homework 7 > 15. <Final Presentation by students> All students will make a presentation by PPT about the content of final assignment, in order to discuss what is innovation and how to produce it. We will wrap up whole discussion through this class.
