2 HASTINGS A Itfhhi h'd/c&ti Published by Hastings College of the Law Alumni Association Vol. 11 JUNE, 1961 No. 2 President's Message We are happy to report of two highly successful Spring meetings recently conducted by the Governors of your Association in the southern part of the State. On the afternoon of February 4, the Board met in Visalia, California. This meeting followed a luncheon sponsored by the Tulare County Bar Association at which Dean David E. Snodgrass was the honored guest. The Dean spoke of the great importance of the contribution made to the law and to society in general by those who have passed their sixtyfifth birthday. Later a reception honoring the Dean was held by the local Alumni group. The attendance at each affair was excellent and Hastings' graduates were attracted from the surrounding Counties of Kern, Kings and Fresno. Co-chairmen for the affair were Orly 0. Davis, '34, of Visalia, and Kenneth A. Kuney, '49, of Tulare. The second meeting of the Board was held in San Diego, California on the afternoon of April 7, It was preceded by an earlier luncheon meeting of the San Diego Bar Association held in the U.S. Grant Hotel. This gathering of over 140 lawyers and judges had been called for the purpose of hearing our inimitable Dean discuss the unique advantages resulting from the establishment of the sixty-five year old minimum age for full-time Professor at Hastings. A subsequent reception for all Hastings Alumni in the area was held at the fashionable Kona Kai Club. It was an outstanding success. Chairman for the day's events was Henry A. Dietz, '33, Board Governor and County Counsel for San Diego. The next meeting of the Board will be held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Alumni Association during the State Bar Convention in Monterey, California. This Annual Meeting and luncheon will be held in the Mark Thomas Inn, Monterey, at noon on Wednesday, September 27, Governor Edmund G. Brown will be the guest of honor and luncheon speaker. The Hastings' Man of the Year Award will be conferred upon a distinguished alumnus, and new members of the Board will be elected for the coming year. Be certain to plan your presence early, as a record attendance is expected by Thomson J. ("Tom") Hudson, '49, the General Chairman. The 1961 Alumni Directory was recently mailed to all graduates. It reveals the names and addresses of 2,238 members of the Association who are dispersed throughout every section of the State and over adjacent borders. It can be readily understood that, through our common ties, we are able to and should respond to each other's need, particularly when the expense and effort is insignificant. So, if you need or hear of an opening for an Hastings' graduate, may we urge that you communicate with the Alumni Placement Bureau? Richard Timm, Placement Director, 198 McAllister Street, San Francisco, will welcome your cooperation. INGEMAR E. HOBERG

KENNETH SAY, '31 Editor RUTH CHURCH GUPTA, '48 Editorial The onset of the summer months means vacations for some Hastings students, summer jobs for others, and a period of preparation for the Bar Examination for the graduates. For Hastings lawyers it means that we earmark our calendars right now for the Annual Meeting of the Alumni Association. Wednesday, September 27, 1961 at Monterey, during the State Bar Convention. Attendance at our annual meetings is always of record proportions. Advance reservations, however, never reflect the size of the crowd that will arrive. If you do not like to eat lunch sitting out in the lobby, where you cannot see or hear much of what is going on, the remedy is simple. Send your reservation in, when you receive your mailed notice of the meeting. President Hoberg will see to it that the program for the Annual Meeting is outstanding, so you should not miss this one. Remember, Monterey, September 27. Dean's Message The academic year has ended, with the graduation of 117 Seniors. Both Faculty and Students will be subjected to crowded and difficult conditions, in the meantime; but the situation will be more favorable in Of one thing every Alumnus may be sure: the growth and development of Hastings are nowhere nearly over.
