6 Natural gas and climate protection. NATURAL GAS NOT ONLY REDUCES EMISSIONS BU T ALSO REDUCES COST S. Protecting the world s environment begins on our own doorstep. If the energy transition is to be successful, energy policy must be designed in a climate-friendly way and geared towards meeting our climate change goals. That only can work if traditional and renewable energy sources work together efficiently. Serious efforts to protect the environment require consensus, and this will only happen if the reduction of CO 2 emissions remains affordable and we improve the carbon footprint of traditional energy sources in the long term. As the most environmentally friendly fossil fuel, natural gas makes a crucial contribution and is an ideal solution as we move towards a low-carbon future. To reduce CO 2 emissions in an affordable way, we must use existing energy sources as efficiently as possible. In this context, we focus our efforts on using natural gas to develop efficient solutions which don t cost the Earth.

7 Natural gas the fuel for now. The best of both worlds. Natural gas is an essential pillar of our energy supply. In 2011, it supplied approximately 24% of the primary energy consumed around the world. This is slightly less than oil (33%) and coal (30%), and significantly more than nuclear power and renewable energies, which together only contributed 13% of the global energy supply. We all want to move to a more sustainable energy mix, and as the cleanest fossil fuel, natural gas has an important role to play in cutting carbon emissions. It produces around 50% less carbon dioxide when burnt than coal and is in abundant supply. As we make the transition to more renewables, natural gas is the perfect energy partner. The future of gas. Natural gas has been used as a fuel for hundreds of years and has a big role to play in our future energy mix. According to estimates by the International Energy Agency (IEA), there are still around 330 trillion cubic meters of naturally occurring gas below the ground, but at WINGAS UK we re just as excited about new technologies which are revolutionising how we use and think about gas. Combined heat and power (CHP) technology allows our customers to use natural gas much more efficiently. CHP can work in a number of different ways, depending on the ultimate use of the excess heat. For example, mini-chp plants can be installed on buildings such as schools, hospitals or offices. Gas is used to generate electricity on site, with the thermal energy this process creates used to heat the buildings. CHP can be used on different scales, from homes and small businesses to power plants and energy-intensive sites. Improving energy efficiency means we can substantially reduce fuel (or primary energy ) consumption, without compromising the quality and reliability of the energy supply to customers. Combined heat and power (CHP) is innovative technology which captures and uses the excess heat produced in electrical and thermal generation. It is most effective when used with natural gas as the fuel, and units are now so advanced they can be installed on individual homes, as well as larger industrial sites. CHP is the perfect solution for affordable efficiency, minimising wasted energy and maximising the potential of fuels while reducing emissions. While CHP technology continues to advance, it has in fact been around for a long time in various forms. The world s first commercial power plant Thomas Edison s Pearl Street Station, built in 1882 used the excess heat it generated to heat nearby buildings. This allowed the plant to achieve approximately 50% efficiency. We ve come a long way since then, and today WINGAS has its own CHP plant in Lubmin, Germany, where the Nord Stream pipeline enters the continent. This is the pipeline which supplies Russian gas to Europe. The Lubmin plant is one of the most advanced CHP plants in the world and is capable of reaching efficiencies of around 90%. Overall, the plant generates about 47 megawatts (MW) of useful heat and 39 MW of electrical power enough energy to supply half a million households for a whole year. We pass this knowledge on to our customers, ensuring they can also benefit by reducing costs and emissions. Constant gas supply pressure is key to the Manchester operation, as its equipment is carefully set up to operate at specific levels. When the transporter announced pressure levels would be reduced for one of Cargill s sites, the company faced considerable challenges. This had the potential to cause the business real issues, Russ commented. My team at WINGAS UK are always at the end of the phone, so I raised it with them. They were excellent they presented our case to the transporter, using their extensive knowledge of our business to outline the importance of maintaining pressure levels at our site. As a result, the proposed changes were not implemented and our business was protected. 16

Edgbaston Cricket Ground, the home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club and the Birmingham Bears, and of course a regular host of the England cricket team, is one of the most energy-efficient stadiums in the country, thanks in part to a pioneering partnership with WINGAS UK. Edgbaston s efficiency drive is part of a wider strategic plan to become the most socially responsible sport stadium in the UK. Using energy as effectively as possible and reducing emissions are big parts of this. As well as reducing costs in the long term, they make Edgbaston more attractive for businesses and organisations to use its facilities as a conference space or a cricketing venue. Within cricket, we are certainly one of the most energy-efficient stadiums, and we re going to continue this push, comments Gareth Roberts, commercial director at Edgbaston. The stadium was redeveloped in 2010/2011 with energy efficiency in mind. Buildings were upgraded and supporting infrastructure was installed, replacing inefficient facilities. Edgbaston also led an education programme to change behaviour of the people who work across the stadium even small things like switching lights off can make a big difference. The boilers and kitchens use up a lot of the stadium s energy, so making sure the people who work in those areas have energy conservation in mind has been crucial to Edgbaston s success.
