Second Year beat First year by 37 points to 18. Athletics Captain D F Allen Secretary C B Cloete D Allen was awarded the Victor Ludorum and Athletic Colours at Sports Day on 3 rd March, Heavy rain cancelled some events but Course 23 beat Course 24 by 61 points to 25. Rugby Club Captain J S Versfeld Secretary H S Gifford Coach Andrew Lang extended the team to their limits and the first team was unbeaten. A tour to Natal was arranged and two out of the three matches were won. Both the Governor s Bowl and the Matron s Bowl were won by Course 23.

4 4 Colours were awarded to D F Allen, P J Cloete, C W Stanton, J S Versfeld, M A Woodhouse and N R Wrench. Cricket Club Captain P E Crouch Secretary M M Bentley Players gave priority to celebrating after their rugby successes. The Inter-year match was won by Course 23 by 106 runs. Students beat the Staff by 4 wickets. Regular members of the College team were: P N Ashby, M M Bentley, Colin Cloete, P E Crouch, D J Ferreira, L L Johnstone, Peter Keen, I Prior, R C H Smith, A S Topham, J S Versfeld and N R Wrench. Hockey Club Captain T D McCusker Secretary J P Wheeler Seven-a-side League Games were played on 2-3 June, Squash Club Captain P G Baker Secretary M M Bellis The team played in the Lomagundi League. The Inter-year match was narrowly won 3-2 by Course 23. Tennis Club Captain A S Topham Secretary M A Woodhouse A friendly match was drawn with Bromley and Course 23 won the Inter-year 3-2. Weightlifting Club Captain P Kramberger Secretary T McCallister Gun Club Captain C Boddy Secretary S Branch There was much enthusiasm this year and Warren ran the show with a clear run of ten. 7 7 First Year Ron Creswell was Gwebi s top ploughman and finished eleventh in the National Championships. Cricket Club Captain C B Cloete Secretary P J Dick Gwebi bowling was of a high standard notably Wes Hall and Peter Dick but lack of depth in batting let several matches slip away. Course 25 won the Inter-year match by default. Colours were awarded to Dave Ferreira, Peter Dick and Wes Hall. Rugby Club Captain H S Gifford Secretary M D Stobart-Vallaro After the previous year s successes, the College was elevated but due to petrol restrictions they had to climb two leagues up to the First League. After acclimatising to their hardened opponents, Gwebi won some tough matches towards the end of the season. The U20s enjoyed many wins but the academic year finished before the season. Course 24 convincingly won the Inter-year Colours were awarded to: C B Cloete (re-award), D J Ferreira, H S Gifford, E J Lyons, P F Mellon, C W Stanton (re-award) and M D Stobart-Vallaro. Squash Club Captain M A Woodhouse Secretary J A Gaskell Course 24 won the Inter-year contest 4-1. Tennis Club Captain D J Ferreira Secretary M P Belinsky Course 24 gave the youngsters a sound beating 3-0 in the Inter-year match. Hockey Captain Secretary J P Wheeler M Sorenson Cross Country The cross-country was run on 5 th March, First G Baier Second G K Otterson Third S P D Duff Course 25 won the Inter-year contest. Athletics Captain G J Baier Secretary P B C Owen Course 25 won one of the closely contested Sports Days. Percy Owen was awarded his Athletics Colours and became Rhodesian Junior Javelin and Shot-put Champion.

8 8 Soccer Captain G Coubrough Secretary N St J Jackson Course 25 entered their own team in the Gwebi Inter-departmental league and progressed to the Finals of the Chibuku Trophy where they were beaten by the Domestic Workers 2-0. Water Polo Captain P J Mellon Secretary N St J Jackson Course 24 won the Inter-year match 8-5. Gwebi Old Students Association Award to Best First Year Students in Animal Husbandry Project: S A I NORTON and E C DAVIES Rugby Club Captain M D Stobart-Vallaro Secretary P L Steyl Changing of the College academic year caused the withdrawal from the Rugby league so only friendly matches were arranged. The First-years fought back from a 18-3 deficit at half time to win the Inter-year match Congratulations went to G K Otterson, C R S Simmonds, P L Steyl and P Zietsman who were awarded Colours and to E J Lyon and M D Stobart-Vallaro for re-awards. Cricket Club Captain P J Dick Secretary T C Millar Great expectations after victory over Cedara Agricultural College in a friendly did not materialise in the Cup when revelry the night before the first match resulted in defeat by minnows Shamva. Good bowling resulted in a total of four wins out of eight matches. A close Inter-year match was won unexpectedly by 5 runs by Course 26. Colours were presented to T C Millar and G K Otterson. Cross Country First R D Rapson Second G K Otterson Third A D Young Athletics Captain P B C Owen Secretary R G Steel Course 26 own the Inter-year trophy. Colours and Victor Ludorum were earned by R G Steel, colours were awarded to A B Hyland-Smith and re-awarded to P B C Owen. Squash Club Captain G K Otterson The academic year only allowed one round of the Lomagundi Squash League to be completed then social games were arranged. The Inter-year match was the highlight of the year, as the result for the Governor s Bowl was in the balance. With both matches equal going into the top-seed final, First Year Millar downed Percy Owen and secured victory of the Squash Inter-year together with the Governor s Bowl.

11 11 Gun Club Captain R M Stirling Secretary J Bickmann Six successful meetings were held with steady progress recorded. Tennis Club Captain J Barton Secretary A Hyland-Smith The Inter-year match was won by the First Year. Mike Belinsky was singles champion. Water-polo Club Captain N St J Jackson Secretary C Simmonds A 9-all draw was the outcome of the Inter-year match. National Service intake Neil St J Jackson and Michael Stobart-Vallaro were commissioned officers from the School of Infantry and Neil was awarded the Sword of Honour. Jeffrey Sommer passed out as No 1 Recruit in BSAP National Service and Anton Seabrooke was No 1 Cadet in Internal Affairs. Regulations changed after this course and it was mandated that all perspective students were required to complete their National Service before entering the College. 14 14 Athletics Club Captain R G Steel Secretary A J Christie Course 27 won both the Cross Country and the Fielding Trophy overall by 61 to 45. R Steel, Course 26, was awarded the Victor Ludorum and scored most points in Field. Cricket Club Captain T C Millar Secretary M B Ewing Strength this season was from the bowlers and only Tommy Millar showed some batting consistency. Eight matches were played and the first seven were won. Colours were awarded to T C Millar and K P Moor. Tommy played for the Mashonaland Districts Senoir side and Kevin toured South Africa with the Mashonaland Districts Senior side. Course 27 won the Inter-year match by five runs. Gun Club Secretary K E Worsley Six meetings were held and Rod Steel was by far the best shot probably because he was closer to the clays than anybody else. Hockey Club Captain A Rose Secretary E Meikle One friendly match against Standard Bank Women s League gave a hard fought win but the return match under harsh field conditions went the wrong way. The Danielz and Ferreira Memorial Match was won by the College 20:19 over the Old Boys. The college year did not fit into the Country Districts season but the Umvukwes Rugby Festival was attended and an enjoyable tour through to Umtali was a substitute for the planned SA tour. The college entered a team in the Salisbury Police Reserve Rifle Club Christmas Shoot. Tim Templar obtained the highest score for the students. As many games that were won by Gwebi were lost. The Rodney Mundy Memorial Double Wicket was won by the Erwine brothers, Neil and Barry, for the second year in succession. In the final of the Loser s Plate, Leith Bray and Angus Chisholm of Tengwe beat Tommy Millar and Butch Vaughan-Davies of Ayreshire. Congratulations to Skea, Millar and West on being selected for the Mashonaland Country District Colts and Millar was Captain. Rugby Jake Bremner got the season off to a good start. Generally the season went well and Gwebi lost most matches. A fine time was had on the tour to South Africa which Colin Campion managed and some rugby was played. Fund raising benefitted from the Gwelo to Salisbury relay run. Hockey Seven gruelling matches were played. Athletics Michael Hallam and Mark Fraser stood out in their performances. Squash Captain A Strathearn Secretary C D Croxford

23 23 No matches were played but social squash was very popular as it was difficult to get a game on the busy court. Tennis Students played regularly amongst themselves, as did the staff. The contest of three pairs between both remains undecided at 1-1 matches. Ploughing Disc results were Odendaal, followed by Oosthuysen, Bosman then Mitchell. Mouldboard was Oosthuysen, Odendaal, Rowley then Layton Mitchell. Overall Champion was Odendaal and runner-up was Oosthuysen.
