1 EDUC& 121 Child Development I Winter 2015 T & Th 10:00-11:30 a.m. Professor: Gayle Dilling Voic Office: SBCDC gdilling@olympic.edu Office hours: Mondays 1-3, Wed 4-5 and Thurs 1-2. These are the best times to drop in for advising. Otherwise, please make an appointment by calling Kara at Course Description: this course provides students with an overview of the physical, cognitive, and social/emotional development of typically developing young children, pre-birth through age eight. In addition, developmental sequences and milestones, the interrelated nature of all areas of development, the application of developmental principles, and observation of young children. Text: The World of Children, Cook, 3rd edition. In addition, the hybrid piece will be accessed through the Canvas site on the OC website: Student Outcomes: upon completion of the course, students will be able to: Outcome (the student will.... ) discuss classical and contemporary theories, current topics, and current research on physical, social/emotional and cognitive domains of child development. describe tools necessary for appropriate assessment of children s growth and development. describe the developmental milestones of physical, cognitive, and social/emotional development of children ages birth through age eight. identify concerns and determine necessary referrals in order to meet a child s or family s specific needs. identify whether children s development is progressing normally and if not, make recommendations about appropriate follow up as needed. Washington State Core Competency I. Child Growth and Development 3e, 3f, 4a I. Child Growth and Development 2f I. Child Growth and Development 1a, 1b, 2b, 2c, 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e I. Child Growth and Development 2h, 4d IV. Family and Community Partnerships 1d, 1e, 2b, 3a I. Child Growth and Development 2f, 2h Olympic College Core Abilities: Core abilities address the broad-based general education requirements that will prepare a student to pursue her/his chosen profession or field of study and to develop themselves as individuals and as citizens. They are taught across programs and disciplines so that each Olympic College student can expect to work towards improving and applying these core abilities regardless of their program or area of concentration. This course meets the following Core Abilities: Communication (core ability 2) Global Perspective and Lifelong Learning
2 Course Policies: most policies can be found in my introduction letter to students. My basic philosophy is that I am here to teach, and you are here to learn. Students sign, date and submit the last page of this syllabus to reflect understanding of these specific policies: Students are responsible for attending class. If absent, students are responsible for missed notes, work due and any announcements made in class. Please do not assume we did nothing important that day, as each class session is carefully planned and organized by the instructor. Attendance will be taken by student signature and is factored as part of the final grade for the course. Professionalism will be exhibited by both instructor and student, and the expectation of classroom etiquette will be strictly followed. Students can expect that the instructor will come to class prepared to teach and the instructor will assume that students will come to class prepared to learn. The instructor values classroom participation. However, please be conscience of your own classroom participation and consider the following: it is not acceptable to be a passive (as in not speaking at all during small or large group instruction) or distracted (as in texting during class or leaving class early) participant, nor is it acceptable to overshare or use the class time as a personal therapy session. No matter how sophisticated a texter you feel you might be, I am a mother of a teenager and I can tell when you text under the table or in your lap or pocket. It is completely disrespectful and my biggest pet peeve. Unless you are a surgeon, there is no need for you to have your phone on at all. Your cell can be set to vibrate if there is a child care/family related issue. Otherwise, it is off in the building the entire building (that means from the moment you come through the reception doors until after you leave the reception area). We are present in the lives of children in this building and that means being respectful of those who work and play here. Assignments are due when they are due not a moment later. Sometimes students choose to turn in an assignment late. With that choice, the consequence of a lowered grade follows. Assessment Methods: students will be evaluated on the following course requirements: Online Discussion Questions & Responses 10 pts. each Weekly Assignments 30 pts. each 8 Chapter Exams 200 pts. Infant Essay 30 pts. Developmental observation of a toddler 40 pts. Developmental observation of a preschooler 40 pts. Attendance/Participation (5 pts. per class) 50 pts. Final Exam 100 pts. Total Points Possible 850 pts. A note about this course: you will attend 20, 1 1/2 hour lecture classes. In addition, you will complete 2 additional course credits (or minimum 4 clock hours per week) working online. Attendance points will be affected if the instructor deems that you have not completed the 2 credit hour online hybrid part of the class in addition to the course lecture. Course Topics and Schedule Generally speaking, discussion questions & weekly assignments will open the day we begin a chapter and are due a week later by midnight. Exams will open the day we finish a chapter and are due one week later by midnight unless otherwise announced.

4 Assignments and Grading Criteria Work receiving a grade of A will be neatly prepared, well organized, free of grammatical, spelling, and syntax errors, typewritten (unless otherwise specified by the instructor), and will indicate critical thought. It will be submitted on time. All other criteria will be discussed further in class. A general note about grading: if you vanish from the course, a grade of 0.0 will be submitted for the final grade. The final grading scale can be found at the end of this syllabus. Discussion Questions and Responses This will be conducted online through the Olympic College Canvas portion of our website. Please refer to the rubric found on the netiquette document for scoring. Answers must indicate critical thinking skills, use terminology discussed in class (or the text), and be written in clear professional language. Brief answers, or those with errors, will score fewer points. Responses must indicate critical thought as well, and points will be deducted for good job or I agree with you simple statements unless followed by discussion that indicates critical thought. Chapter Exams Taken on line and downloaded automatically into the instructor s grade book online. You will take 9 exams for chapters 1-9 and drop the lowest score for a total of 8 exams plus the final exam (which cannot be dropped). Infant Essay Must be typewritten, submitted in Canvas. Students will choose to explore a topic more in depth centered on infant growth and development. Specific criteria discussed in class. Developmental Profiles Must be typewritten, submitted in Canvas. Specific criteria will be distributed in class. Observation of two children (a toddler and a preschooler) will require an ethics statement signed by the student. Observations will be conducted at the Sophia Bremer Child Development Center on campus. Please note: all students will be asked to sign a Code of Ethical Conduct statement. It is imperative that confidentiality be maintained at all times in this class, since live subjects are observed. This will be discussed in class, and will be turned in with your first observation assignment. Please be sure you are aware of, and adhere to, the confidentiality agreement. Automatic failure of the class will result if the instructor feels that confidentiality has been breached. In addition, if you are an Education and/or Early Childhood Education student, and should you have circumstances that might prevent you from passing a criminal background check and/or a TB test screening, please notify the instructor immediately. Additional Information: Student Olympic College has a new student policy: communication with students will be conducted through OC accounts only. Please check daily. OC automatically provides accounts when students register and pay their tuition and fees. I will not communicate with you using your personal home accounts. If you have questions or problems, you can contact the Help Desk at helpdesk@oc.ctc.edu or call For more information on how to access your student account go to:
5 Computers/Printer in Room 105E The computers in the back of the classroom are for ECE student use only. They are to be used only during breaks in class sessions. Students are not allowed to use the computers while instructors are teaching. Large printing jobs are not allowed. ADA Statement: any student who feels that they need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact the office of ACCESS Services in the Humanities Building, Room 114, or call Final Grades: determined by adding the number of points students earn divided by number of points possible. This will give a percentage which can be converted into the decimal grade found on your transcript.
