Introduction of main wireless technologies Bluetooth / Panasonic PAN1322 Bluetooth SPP-Module Bluetooth is an open wireless protocol for data exchange according IEEE within short ranges creating Personal Area Networks (PAN). Fixed and mobile devices can include this technology. Primarily it is designed for short range and low-power consumption, focussing application such as mobile phones, laptops, personal computers printers, digital cameras and other peripherals GPS systems Medical devices Consumer Devices Industrial automation, sensor system Panasonic PAN 1315 Bluetooth HCI Module Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices through a secure, globally unlicensed ISM 2.4 GHz short-range radio frequency band. In a piconet, which is an adhoc network, a Bluetooth master can communicate with up to 7 devices. If two or more piconets are connected to each other, this is called scatternet. The range is dependent on the power class and the data rate is mainly dependent on the used protocol stack version. 2

3 Introduction of some main technologies Class Maximum permitted power Approximate range Class mw (20 dbm) 100 m Class mw (4 dbm) 10 m Class 3 1 mw (0 dbm) 1 m Stack version Data rate Main features Version Mbit/s Frequency hopping Version EDR 1 Mbit/s Enhanced data rate Version EDR 2-3 Mbit/s Simple pairing, NFC cooperation Version EDR Up to 3 Mbit/s Alternate MAC / PHY Version EDR Up to 300 kbits/s Low energy On top of the complex stack (incl. e.g. HCI, LMP, L2CAP, SDP) various profiles for different applications are used. The different profiles are describing specific application in order to provide full compatibility between the devices. Main profiles are e.g. Serial Port Profile (SPP), Health Device Profile (HDP), Headset Profile (HSP) and more. Panasonic PAN1026 Dual Mode SPP Module Bluetooth V4.0, also called Low Energy or officially marked Bluetooth SMART is not backwards compatible to Bluetooth v3.0 and V2.x. It is made for low power consumption using different hardware, frequency hopping and the Low Power Stack is different structured and less complex. Also Profiles are different in Bluetooth V4.0 and actually very limited regarding functionality, because these are written to support senosrs and actors mainly. IEEE / ZigBee and other Mesh Stacks Panasonic PAN1455 Health Device BT Module IEEE is a specification for low-power radio ideally used for low power and wireless personal area networks (WPANs) using the 2.4 GHz ISM band. More and more devices supporting 868 MHz and 915 MHz with this dedicated hardware interface are supplied to the market. ZigBee is a specification for a suite of high level communication protocols using this hardware for special multi node mesh networks for the personal area. ZigBee is targeted at RF applications that require a low data rate, long battery life, and secure networking. The current list of application profiles either published or under specification are e.g.: ZigBee Home automation ZigBee Smart Energy ZigBee Remote Control ZigBee Health Profile Therefore it is classified as a low-power, wireless mesh networking standard. The low cost allows the technology to be widely deployed in wireless control and monitoring applications, the low power-usage allows longer life with smaller batteries, and the mesh networking provides high reliability and larger range. Mesh topology is a type of network in which each node applies as an independent router, regardless of whether it is connected to another network or not. It allows for continuous connections and reconfiguration around broken or blocked paths by "hopping" from node to node until the destination is reached. Also software stacks like 6loWPAN, Synapse SNAP or MiWi from Microchip are supporting mesh networking using the interface. 3

4 Introduction of some main technologies WLAN / x IEEE is a set of standards carrying out wireless local area network (WLAN) communication in the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency bands.the most important differentiator is the much higher data rate (up to 150 Mbps), compared to the or standard. Additionally the power consumption is higher than with compared technologies like Bluetooth or ZigBee and the modules are less compact regarding size. On top of the basic protocols standard internet protocols like TCP/IP, UDP and so on are used. Main applications are: Lesswire WiBear11n Module Wireless data communication Internet connectivity Multimedia applications Applications requiring high data rates also in Industrial or Building automation Main differences of various standards are illustrated in the following table: protocol Frequency (GHz) Bandwidth (MHz) Data rate (Mbit/s) Modulation type Range indoor (m) Range outdoor (m) a OFDM b DSSS g OFDM / DSSS n 2.4 / 5 20 / OFDM IEEE defines the physical layer (PHY) and MAC (Media Access Control) layers based on CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance). The specification includes provisions designed to minimize collisions, because two mobile units may both be in range of a common access point, but out of range of each other. WNC Wistron DNXA-97 WLAN PCIe Module Nowadays WLAN Solutions support different kind of modes, like Access Point Mode (the most complex) Soft-Access Point, Wifi Direct (in order to connect to mobile devices easily) and Station Mode. Also different security standards are known in the market, e.g. WEP, WPA and WPA2, WAPI as well as WPS. State of the art is WPA2 today. 5 Introduction of some main technologies Sub-GHz Short Range Devices / ISM-Band (433 MHz and 866 MHz) SRD, Short Range Device is a term that is applied to a radio device that is designed to operate over a short range. This also implies that the power levels are low and hence the likelihood of interference to other devices is low. Cost effectiveness is most often an important decision factor to use this technology, because the total cost of ownership is low. Normally these applications allow peer-to-peer connectivity and have no security features. There are still some devices on the market, which allow unidirectional data transfer only, but most often bidirectional communication is possible nowadays. Target applications for SRD are actually requiring less performance and security and are easier to integrate into end devices. Typical applications with such kind of requirements are listed below: Panasonic PAN2355 ISM Band Module Remote controls (Garage door and gate controls) Sensor networking Alarms and movement detectors Low rate data transmission etc. These devices operate from MHz to MHz with 25 khz channel spacing with a maximum legal power output of 10 mw. European licence-free SRD transceivers also include Short Range Device and MHz (SRD860), which have a maximum legal output power of 5 mw. In USA MHz band and in UK 458 MHz band are the allowed radio bands, which are not allowed for usage in rest of Europe. Also software stacks like 6loWPAN, Synapse SNAP or MiWi from Microchip are supporting mesh networking using the interface. 6 Introduction of some main technologies GSM / GPRS / EDGE - Mobile Communication Standards GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications (originally Groupe Spécial Mobile) and it is a standard set developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to describe technologies for second generation (2G) digital cellular networks. GSM standard originally described a digital, circuit switched network optimized for full duplex voice telephony and it is the leading cellular phone standard in the world, with networks in most countries. The standard was expanded over time to include first Circuit Switched Data (CSD, up to 14.4 kbps) transport, then High- Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD, up to 43.2 kbps using more than one time slot) and later General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) This standard with packet data channels on one or several time slots up to kbps is used most often nowadays. GSM is a cellular network. There are five different cell sizes in a GSM network: macro, micro, pico, femto and umbrella cells. The coverage area of each cell varies according to the implementation environment with longest range of 35 kilometers. GSM networks operate in a number of different carrier frequency ranges, with most 2G GSM networks operating in the 900 MHz or 1800 MHz bands. Where these bands were already allocated, the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands were used instead (e.g. in Canada and the USA). The transmission power in the handset is limited to a maximum of 2 Watts in GSM850/900 band and 1 Watt in GSM1800/1900 band. GSM technology is a TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) system with eight time slots per carrier. The modulation used in GSM is Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK). The evolution path for higher data rates is called EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution). The objective of the EDGE technology is to increase data transmission rates (up to kbps) as well as spectrum efficiency and to facilitate new applications with increased capacity for mobile use. EDGE is a superset to GPRS, utilizing the same bandwidth and frequencies, and can function on any network with GPRS deployed on it, provided the carrier implements the necessary upgrade. UMTS Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks have been deployed world-wide as 3rd generation (3G) mobile communications systems. Developed by the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), UMTS employs Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) radio access technology to offer greater spectral efficiency and bandwidth to mobile network operators. UMTS specifies a complete network system. Unlike EDGE, UMTS requires new base stations and new frequency allocations. The maximum UMTS data rate is 384 kbps at the moment, but in the future it will be possible to combine several code channels to a multi-code link, allowing data rates up to 2 Mbps. UMTS provides a clear evolutionary path to High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA). HSPA refers to the combination of High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA). HSDPA allows data rates up to 14.4 Mbps in the downlink. HSUPA makes uplink data rates of 5.76 Mbps possible. UMTS supports maximum theoretical data transfer rates of 84 Mbps when HSPA+ is implemented in the network. HSPA+ as specified in 3GPP Release 7 includes downlink MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) operation, higher-order modulation and protocol improvements that specifically allow a high number of always on users to be supported in the network. The specific frequency bands originally defined by the UMTS standard are MHz for the Mobile-to-Base (Uplink) and MHz for the Base-to-Mobile (Downlink). UMTS phones usually support several different frequencies in addition to their GSM fallback. Different countries support different UMTS frequency bands. Europe initially used 2100 MHz while the most carriers in the USA use 850 MHz and 1900 MHz. W-CDMA uses the DS-CDMA channel access method and Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) modulation with a pair of 5 MHz wide channels. UMTS uses different power classes with a maximum output power in power class 1 of 33 dbm, class 2 it is 27 dbm, in class 3 it is 24 dbm and in class 4 it is 21 dbm. Taoglas Ceramic Cellular PA.710 6

The GPS system itself is operated by the U.S. Department of Defense for both military use and use by the general public and was officially put into operation in Using the difference in the radio signal propagation times of at least three or more of the 32 GPS satellites, a GPS receiver can accurately determine its position worldwide to within a few meters using trilateration. A-GPS (Assisted GPS) is mainly used in mobile terminals and in cellular networks to enhance performance by means of faster localization and higher accuracy. A-GPS uses the coordinates of the base station serving the radio cell in which the mobile terminal is located and transmits this information to the mobile terminal via an assisted channel. Quectel L50 GPS Module with Patch The original GPS design contains two ranging codes: the Coarse/Acquisition (C/A) code, which is freely available to the public, and the restricted Precision (P) code, usually reserved for military applications. For the ranging codes and navigation message to travel from the satellite to the receiver, they must be modulated onto a carrier frequency. In the case of the original GPS design, two frequencies are utilized; one at MHz called L1 for civilian use; and a second at MHz, called L2 for military use. 7

8 Introduction of some main technologies The C/A code is transmitted on the frequency as a MHz signal using a bi-phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation technique. The P(Y)-code is transmitted on both the L1 and L2 frequencies as a MHz signal using the same BPSK modulation, however the P(Y)-code carrier is in quadrature with the C/A carrier. All satellites broadcast at the same two frequencies, GHz (L1 signal) and GHz (L2 signal). The satellite network uses a CDMA spread-spectrum technique where the low-bitrate message data is encoded with a high-rate pseudorandom (PRN) sequence that is different for each satellite. The receiver must be aware of the PRN codes for each satellite to reconstruct the actual message data. GLONASS (Globalnaya navigatsionnaya sputnikovaya sistema - Global Navigation Satellite System) is a radio-based satellite navigation system operated by the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces. It both complements and provides an alternative to the United States Global Positioning System (GPS) and is the only alternative navigational system in operation with global coverage and of comparable precision. Taoglas Spartan-Series MA600W 3 in 1 for GPS, WiFi, 2G/3G GLONASS satellites transmit two types of signal: a standard precision (SP) signal and an obfuscated high precision (HP) signal. The signals use similar DSSS encoding and binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation as in GPS signals. All GLONASS satellites transmit the same code as their SP signal; however each transmits on a different frequency using a 15-channel frequency division multiple access (FDMA) technique spanning either side from MHz, known as the L1 band. The center frequency is 1602 MHz + n MHz, where n is a satellite s frequency channel number (n= 7, 6, 5,...0,...,6, previously n=0,...,13).
