Candidate for President Loren Terveen The University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, USA Ph.D., University of Texas, 1991, Computer Sciences. Professor, The University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, 2002 Present; Principal Member of Technical Staff, AT&T Labs - Research, Florham Park, NJ, ; Member of Technical Staff, AT&T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, Social Computing; Crowdsourcing; Computer-Supported Collaborative Work; Recommender Systems; Intelligent User Interfaces. Membership and Offices in Related Organizations: SIGCHI Vice President for Membership and Communication, ACM SIGCHI, ; CSCW Program Co-Chair, ACM SIGCHI/ CSCW Conference, 2013; CHI Conference Co-Chair, ACM SIGCHI/ CHI Conference, Awards Received: ACM Distinguished Scientist, STATEMENT I will focus on the following issues (also see Helena Mentis s statement): Inclusiveness and Outreach - Build on SIGCHI s success. Promote participation at all levels by groups traditionally underrepresented in Computing. Evangelize our record and success to the rest of ACM and the broader Computing community. Research+Practice - As user interfaces, social computing, ubiquitous computing, etc. have become crucially important in industry, our conferences have lagged in attracting practitioners to both learn from and teach researchers. I will work to make our community essential for practitioners as well as researchers.
Modernizing Our Processes - Participation in our flagship conferences has increased dramatically; therefore, we must update our processes to make sure they scale. We also must examine our reviewing and publication processes to be sure they serve community goals, updating them as appropriate. Internationalization - SIGCHI has worked to move beyond our traditional base of North America and Europe. I will continue this effort, evaluating the success of past endeavours as a step toward determining future steps. Openness - I will work to increase communication between SIGCHI leadership and members. We will use modern communication media effectively to open community deliberations, discussions, and data to the greatest possible extent.
Candidate for Executive Vice-President Helena Mentis University of Maryland Baltimore County, Baltimore, MD, USA Ph.D., The Pennsylvania State University, 2010, Information Sciences and Technology. Assistant Professor, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Baltimore, MD, 2013 Present; Research Fellow, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, ; Postdoctoral Researcher, Microsoft Research Cambridge, Cambridge, UK, Health Informatics; Gestural Interaction; Movement Sensing; Collaboration/Coordination. ACM Activities: WiPs Co-chair, CHI 2016 Conference, 2014 Present; Best Paper Committee Co-chair, CSCW 2014 Conference, ; Program Committee Associate Chair, CHI 2014 Conference, ; Program Committee Associate Chair, CSCW 2014 Conference, STATEMENT It is my honor to run for Vice President of SIGCHI. I have been a part of the SIGCHI community since 2002 when I attended my first CHI conference in snowy Minneapolis. Since then I have started three local SIGCHI chapters, been a conference committee member for CHI and CSCW, and served as an Associate Chair for four different SIGCHI conferences. As Vice President, I will support the President in achieving the goals of inclusiveness, tightly integrating practitioners, modernizing our processes, internationalizing SIGCHI, and presenting a transparent and open process throughout the community. In particular, my goal is to enhance our ability to grow by addressing reviewing and service through policy and technology as well as well-defined mentorship. In addition, the SIGCHI community has much to offer other fields of practice and research and could benefit from the inclusion of SIGCHI related publications in databases such as PubMed. Finally, I fully support greater transparency of the SIGCHI executive committee and associated conference leadership.
Candidate for Vice-President for Membership and Communications Regina Bernhaupt IRIT, Toulouse, France Habilitation, Université Paul Sabatier, 2008, Human Computer Interaction. Guest Professor, IRIT, Toulouse, France, 2008 Present; Director of User Experience Research, ruwido, Neumarkt, Austria, 2007 Present; Assistant Professor, University of Salzburg, Salzburg, Austria, Human Computer Interaction; Interactive Television; Remote Control; Games and Entertainment; User Experience. STATEMENT ACM SIGCHI is vital for the development of the field of Human-Computer Interaction. A key interest for me is to develop the field of HCI further by integrating new communities in the field. As chair for the games and entertainment community I established games as a central field at the CHI conference and initiated the creation of a new ACM SIGCHI conference (ChiPlay). In my role as member of the conference management committee of SIGCHI my main interest was to gather feedback about the quality of the conferences and contribute to enhancing SIGCHI conferences, especially by developing a course curriculum spanning over all SIGCHI Conferences. The central goal of my activity in the Executive Committee will be to continue to grow the field of HCI: by growing the membership of SIGCHI not only in numbers but especially in quality: (1) withoffers like certified course programs that span over different SIGCHI conferences (2) with new forms of participation and communication like new conferences or new ways to attend conferences and (3) with an overall improvement of the communication to members.
Candidate for Vice President of Membership and Communications Patrick Gage Kelley University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM, USA Ph.D., Carnegie Mellon University, 2013, Design of Privacy Information. Assistant Professor, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM, 2012 Present; Ph.D. Student, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, ; Visiting Researcher, Intel Research Labs Seattle, Seattle, WA, Privacy; Usability; Human Computer Interaction; Information Visualization; Technology Ethics. Membership and Offices in Related Organizations: Director of Communications, National Association of Graduate and Professional Students, Awards Received: ACM Student Research Competition 1st Place, 2010; SIGCHI Student Research Competition 1st Place, STATEMENT It is my hope to showcase the excellent efforts by researchers and volunteers that support Human Computer Interaction across the globe. From education and curricular development efforts to informing public policy and supporting the growth of HCI in the developing world, SIGCHI does so much that our membership deserves to better understand and be able to participate in. In my two years on the SIGCHI Executive Committee I have supported social media efforts and collaborations, policy-making and coordination around branding efforts, and continue to push strongly for increased transparency to our membership and the public. I intend to continue this work as VP of Membership and Communications. This role aligns so well with what I have been working towards that a full three-year term to continue to refine our communication channels to our membership and to support the growth and openness of our community is a unique opportunity.
With questions or suggestions, please contact me. This can be to shape the direction of communications with our membership, to tell me what information you need, and with ideas for how we can further create value and promote the existing value of SIGCHI membership and our community.
Candidate for Vice-President for Finance Vanessa Evers University of Twente, Enschede, Netherlands Ph.D., Open University, UK, 2001, Human Computer Interaction. Full Professor and Chair, University of Twente, Enschede, Netherlands, 2011 Present; Assistant Professor, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands, ; Usability lead, Boston Consulting Group, London, United Kingdom, Human Robot Interaction; Cultural Aspects of HCI; Multimodal Interaction; Computer supported cooperative work; Interaction Design. ACM Activities: Posters co-chair, CSCW, 2016; Steering Committee Co-chair, HRI, ; General co-chair, CABS 2014, 2013; General co-chair/program Chair, HRI 2013/HRI Membership and Offices in Related Organizations: Representative member of Netherlands, IFIP, 2015 Present; Member fund for advancement of the internet, SIDN (chair Prince Constantijn of Orange), 2014 Present; Member, European Robotics forum, 2013 Present. Awards Received: CHI Best Note Award, 2009; James Chen Best Paper award, Yearly UMUAI award, STATEMENT I am honoured to be given the opportunity to run for VP of Finance for SIGCHI. I have been participating in SIGCHI since I started my Ph.D. in 1997 and have been involved in PC's, workshops etc. I find SIGCHI a hugely inspiring community where I can find my scientific heroes and also see young people blossom into the field. I would be happy to help this community in any way and am eager to bring new energy and commitment to the
executive committee. I have extensive academic service experience for conferences such as CSCW, HRI and many others. I am Chair of the department of Human Media Interaction and Scientific Director of the DesignLab of the University of Twente as well as a member in various boards related to national and European Funding. (cv: vanessaevers.wordpress.com). As VP of Finance, I would strive to liason effectively between ACM and SIGCHI, so that people enjoy collaborating and trust me as a go-between; Focus on the bigger picture of SIGCHI's (financial) health; Investigate new options for investment toward the future; and enjoy working together with the other officers to continue improving SIGCHI.
Candidate for Vice-President for Finance Dan R. Olsen Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, USA Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania, 1981, Computer Science. Professor, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, ; Director, Human Computer Interaction Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, ; Assistant Professor, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, Interactive Software; Interactive Machine Learning; Physical Computing; Educational Software; Interactive Television. ACM Activities: Adjunct Chair of Communities, SIGCHI, 2013 Present; Vice President of Publications, SIGCHI, ; Editor in Chief, TOCHI, ; Treasurer, SIGCHI, Awards Received: SIGCHI Lifetime Research Award, 2012; ACM Fellow, 2007; CHI Academy, 2004; SIGCHI Lifetime Service Award, STATEMENT A major part of the effectiveness of SIGCHI is our financial stability. Even in the very lean years after 9/11, SIGCHI was never close to financial problems. Careful attention to expenses has given us flexibility and opportunity. Over the last 6 years we have developed huge financial surpluses. These are way beyond what is required for a financially healthy organization. Our challenge now is to find responsible ways to use those funds to benefit the SIGCHI community. We do not want to just throw them at anything but we do want to do more than just save up the money.
Our moving of the CHI conference to Asia has been a major strategic move that was possible because of our financial resources. It remains to be seen what this will cost us. We need to plan similar initiatives that build our common vision, using the money we have. As VP of Finances I will be looking very carefully at new ways to responsibly use the community s funds.
Candidate for Vice-President at Large Vicki L. Hanson Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY, USA Ph.D., University of Oregon, 1978, Cognitive Psychology. ACM Activities: ACM Vice-President, Executive Committee, 2014 Present; ACM Fellows Committee (2015 Chair), Awards Committee, 2014 Present; ACM-W Europe Executive Committee, ACM Europe, 2012 Present; CHI '13 & CHI '14 Papers and Notes Subcommittee Co-Chair, SIGCHI, Membership and Offices in Related Organizations: Fellow, Royal Society of Edinburgh, 2013 Present; Fellow, British Computer Society (BCS), 2009 Present; Member, IEEE, 2014 Present. Awards Received: ACM SIGACCESS, Outstanding Contributions to Accessibility, 2014; Anita Borg Institute, Woman of Vision Award for Social Impact, 2013; ACM SIGCHI, Social Impact Award, 2008; ACM, Fellow, STATEMENT As a long-time SIGCHI conference attendee, member, and volunteer, and as a leader of ACM, I respect the innovative contributions of SIGCHI to the computing community and its clear leadership of the field. Researchers and practitioners from visual and user experience design through software development and engineering view SIGCHI conferences and publications
as central to their career. This impact does not happen by chance, but rather requires leaders who are involved in and actively listen to the needs of the community and are able to shape an agenda that is both forward thinking and responsive to the diverse backgrounds and needs of its members. The strength of SIGCHI comes from its investment in its community through multiple innovative initiatives. I strongly support and would work to reinforce SIGCHI s efforts in growing the international community, in supporting regional chapters, in creating educational materials, and in increasing members participation in all aspects of the ACM Awards process. Through my many years of participation and leadership within ACM, in governance, editorial, and conference leadership positions, I have developed skills and networks that I would be pleased to contribute as SIGCHI s Vice-President at Large.

STATEMENT Addressing gaps between academics and practitioners. We need to connect academic outputs with industry needs and make it easier for practitioners to adopt critical research. This will make SIGCHI and the wider profession stronger. Making the value of research more evident to industry could also Increase funding for research. Collaboration with practitioner groups. To address the gap, we must also work together with practitioner organizations, such as UXPA, etc. to address the fact that not all practitioners see SIGCHI as relevant to them, we should link research and practice more explicitly. We are stronger when we work together as equals, recognizing each other s value and strengths. Education. Growing demand for UX in industry without clear accepted educational standards leads to confusion and poor performance, and ultimately degrades UX in the eyes of management. We must identify what skills and knowledge are critical and address how to teach these effectively. International, especially so-called developing world support. As our profession grows, we need continued focus on helping new HCI/UX communities to develop and thrive. We also need to learn from them in order to extend the profession in culturally-appropriate ways. Inclusion. Extending outreach to everyone will help SIGCHI flourish.

event, UX Indonesia-Malaysia held in Jakarta in April From this kick-off meeting, the Indonesia ACM SIGCHI local chapter was formed in May 2014 and I am privileged to be the first chair of this chapter. In this chapter, we started from ground zero to develop and grow awareness of the community about HCI. Local meetings, professional meetups, university seminars, workshops, bootcamps, online meetings, mentoring and conferences are actively organised. In less than a year, we have more than 300 community members and volunteers participating actively in this chapter. The VP at large position will give me more opportunities to be an ACM SIGCHI ambassador to promote and develop HCI, particularly in the Asia Pacific region and strengthen connection amongst the countries here.
