1 BIRMINGHAM BLACK NURSES ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS BBNA SCHOLARSHIP Scholarship provided by BBNA for unlicensed nursing students pursuing an associate or baccalaureate degree in nursing. There are two $1,000 scholarships. Dr. Martha A. Dawson Scholarship Scholarship provided by Dr. Martha A. Dawson in honor of her brothers, (David L., Johnny L, and Simon Dawson). The scholarship is for an unlicensed nursing student pursuing an undergraduate degree in nursing. The scholarship is $250. Brenda's Brown Bosom Buddies Scholarship Scholarship provided Brenda s Brown Bosom Buddies (BBBB), a 501(c) (3), organization that supports women/men of color who are either breast cancer survivors or have been directly affected by the disease. The organization also educates, and facilitates activities and programs to empower its target audience. Ms. Brenda J. Phillips Hong is the founding executive director of BBBB. The scholarship is for an undergraduate or graduate nursing student pursuing a degree who demonstrates an interest in breast cancer education. The scholarship recipient must participate in a minimum of one breast cancer awareness community forum sponsored by Brenda s Brown Bosom Buddies. The scholarship is $250. Kim Rutley-Campbell Nursing Leadership Scholarship Scholarship is provided by Mrs. Kim Rutley-Campbell in an effort to assist in preparing the next generation of minority nurse leaders and to alleviate the ethnic disparity in nursing leadership. The scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student with an interest and potential for nursing leadership or graduate nursing student with a focus in nursing leadership. The successful applicant must articulate specific evidence and plans that (1) improve the health status and/or social conditions of African Americans and/or (2) create healthy work environments for minority nurses. The scholarship is $250.

(BBNA), as a chapter of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA), is committed to excellence in education. Through its dedicated members, BBNA offers continuing education programs for nurses, nursing students, and allied health professionals. Its members are also involved in various community-based activities to reach the underserved members of our communities. We would like you to become a part of this great professional organization. This year, BBNA is pleased to announce the awarding of its annual nursing student scholarship. The deadline is no later than October 4, 2014 for receipt of the completed application packet. You must mail or the completed application packet so that it is postmarked or received no later than October 4, In order to receive the scholarship, you must attend the scholarship brunch on Saturday November 1, 2014 at The Vulcan Park & Museum in Birmingham, Alabama. We also invite you to become a member of BBNA or other chapters of the National Black Nurses Association. There are also chapters located in Montgomery and Mobile. The members of BBNA look forward to your ideas and active involvement. The scholarship will assist in the funding that is needed for your school expenses and is applied to the student account at your nursing school. Please carefully review the Scholarship Requirements. Scholarship Requirements Each applicant must meet the following criteria: 1. current enrollment in a licensed registered nursing program that is approved and or provisionally approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing, 2. good scholastic standing at the time of application, 3. successful completion of the first clinical nursing course, 4. at least 2 full semesters remaining of nursing school, can include current semester, For consideration, the application packet must contain all the following requirements: 1. Official transcript(s) from all colleges, universities, and schools attended, (An official transcript is one that has the school's embossed seal and is in its unopened school's official envelope.), 2. An essay that adheres to the Essay Guidelines, 3. Two (2) letters of recommendation and at least one letter that is written on the school's letterhead stationery from one of the applicant's current nursing faculty, one letter may be from a current member of professional organization, 4. Additional evidences (documentation: maintain original; send copy only) to support the applicant's qualifications; the applicant will need to include descriptions of extracurricular activities and community involvement. These activities include, but are not limited to, the following examples: participation in a student nurses association; other extra-curricular activities of the school; involvement in the African-American community, i.e., letters, newspaper clippings, awards, certificates, etc., that support this involvement; other evidence such as a certificate, plaque, letter from official of an organization, ex., Girl/Boy Scouts, Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, in which the applicant participated in the community or in community service activities. 5 Essay Guidelines The essay must meet the following criteria: presentation of how you will use your degree to improve the health status and/or social conditions of African Americans, statement summarizing your career goals after you obtain your degree, descriptions of your involvement in extracurricular and community activities -- These include, but are not limited to, the following examples: participation in a student nurses association/professional organizations; other extra-curricular activities of the school; involvement in the African-American community (must provide documentation such as copies of letters, newspaper clippings, awards, certificates, etc., that support this involvement); other evidence such as a certificate, plaque, letter from official of an organization, ex., Girl/Boy Scouts, Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, in which you participated in the community or in community service activities. typed or word-processed, 12 font; style: any standard, non-italic, ex., Arial, Times New Roman, doubled spaced with one-inch margins, length: minimum 2 pages, maximum 3 pages, correct grammatical construction, and correct spelling.
