3 Dean s Message It has been my pleasure to serve the WSU Carson College of Business since 1997, first as a faculty member and now as interim dean. I have seen the college evolve to meet the changing needs of students and strategically invest all resources we receive to improve the quality and outcomes of our programs across all levels. 13 Faculty Genevieve Briand, Ph.D. Genevieve Briand earned her Ph.D. in agricultural and resource economics from Washington State University. She is currently an instructor in the School of Economic Sciences. Dr. Briand s areas of interest include economics education, econometrics, microeconomic theory, natural resource economics, and public finance and policy. She is a member of the American Economic Association and the Western Economics Association International. Kenneth D. Butterfield, Ph.D. Dr. Butterfield is an associate professor of management at Washington State University. He received his Ph.D. in organizational behavior from Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Butterfield has taught courses on managerial leadership and general management at the undergraduate, MBA, and Ph.D. levels. His current research focuses on the management of ethics, moral awareness, and restorative justice in the workplace. Dr. Butterfield has received various research grants, including one for work on the clean-up process at the nation s nuclear weapons complex. He has presented his work at a variety of national and international conferences as well as served on the editorial review boards of Academy of Management Learning and Education and Business Ethics Quarterly. Dr. Butterfield s research has been published in several management, business ethics, and higher education journals. His research has also been featured in numerous media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Stergios B. Fotopoulos, Ph.D. Stergios B. Fotopoulos, a professor in finance and management science, received his Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees in mathematical statistics and applied stochastic processes from the University of Liverpool (U.K.). He has served in research and teaching capacities at Birkbeck College, University of London, Simon Fraser University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Patras and University of Ioannina. He has been a research specialist for the Agricultural Bank of Greece. Dr. Fotopoulos joined Washington State University 25 11

14 years ago. His graduate and undergraduate teaching experience is primarily in business statistics, regression analysis, ANOVA, and applied stochastic processes. Dr. Fotopoulos has served as editor for Applied Stochastic Models in Business and Industry and continues as an associate editor for the same journal. He is also an associate editor for the International Journal of Statistics & Systems and Technometrics (American Statistical Association) in the book section. Dr. Fotopoulos s research interests have been in the theoretical and applied fields of stochastic processes, applied probability, stable processes, probability and statistics under dependence structures, and changepoint analysis. He has over 55 referred articles and more than 20 proceedings. He has been an invited speaker for more than 30 major conferences over the past 15 years. His research has been published in numerous journals including the Annals of Applied Statistics, Journal of Applied Probability, Journal of Time Series, Annals of Statistics, Biometrika, and Environmetrics. Joseph B. Harris, B.S., MBA Mr. Harris is a clinical professor of entrepreneurship in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship. He assists the state s small businesses with high-tech product development and commercialization. He also provides direct oneto-one counseling to small business owners for management and technical issues such as strategy development, cash flow analysis, market plan development, business plan development, policies and procedures, purchase or sale of business, and access to capital. Mr. Harris also serves as an adjunct professor in the WSU Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. He has taught classes in entrepreneurial marketing, management, and finance. He has also taught Mgt. 496, which leads students through the process of writing a business plan for their own business, and Mgt. 492 which teaches students to act as a consultant to local businesses. Mr. Harris worked for several years as a counselor for the Washington Small Business Development Center. During this time, he worked with over 800 small businesses in the state, consulting on such issues as business plan development, business startup, marketing, finance, management, and strategy. 12

15 Mr. Harris operated his own business for eight years. His scientific instrument manufacturing company had sales of over $1 million with 14 employees. He has personally been involved in the writing and administering of three successful SBIR Phase I awards and one Phase II award granted to companies he has owned. Mr. Harris holds B.S. and MBA degrees from Washington State University. Rodrigo Hernandez, Ph.D. Rodrigo Hernandez is an associate professor of finance at Radford University. He completed his Ph.D. in finance at the University of Arkansas in 2007 and holds a M.A. in economics from the University of Arkansas, M.A. in economics and public policies from Instituto Torcuato Di Tella InterAmerican Development Bank, specialization in taxation and specialization in tax law from the Universidad de Belgrano, and public accountant from Universidad Católica de Córdoba. Dr. Hernandez teaches finance courses at the undergraduate and MBA level. He conducts research on financial engineering, particularly structured products, market anomalies, and corporate finance. His research has been published in Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, Review of Futures Markets, Managerial Finance, Banking & Finance Review, International Journal of Financial Markets and Derivatives, and other journals. Jianli Hu, Ph.D. Jianli Hu received her Ph.D. in operations management with a minor in operations research. She also holds an M.A. in apparel merchandising and a B.S. in clothing engineering. Her general research areas of interest involve supply chain management, e-commerce, logistics management, and inventory theory. Dr. Hu has published in peer-reviewed journals including the European Journal of Operations Research, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Interfaces, and the International Journal of Procurement Management. 13

16 In addition to teaching, she has also worked as a consultant for private companies, including Alibaba Online and EDI China. Robert F. Jenefsky, Ph.D. Trained as a physicist, Dr. Jenefsky pursued his doctoral research at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland and received his Ph.D. from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. He is also a graduate of the International Advanced Management Program at INSEAD (Fontainebleau, France). Dr. Jenefsky held senior management positions in the control systems and information technology industries for 20 years, after which he joined Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne as professor of marketing and management as well as an internal and external consultant, until his retirement in He is currently teaching the WSU online MBA strategy course and has previously taught in WSU s Swiss Study Abroad program. He also teaches the online MBA courses at Middlesex University (London, UK) and is serving as the president of two non-profit organizations. Dr. Jenefsky has authored case studies, conference papers, and journal articles in the area of control systems, marketing strategies, consulting, international hospitality strategies and service excellence, as well as being an invited speaker at numerous international topical conferences. In 2004, he received an award for outstanding service from the Management Consulting Division of the Academy of Management. Kalvin Joshi, Ph.D. Kalvin N. Joshi Esq., J.D., is a clinical associate professor of business law and international law and has been a faculty member at the Washington State University College of Business for 13 years. He teaches a variety of business and law courses and conducts global Executive MBA seminars for international Executive MBA students for the College of Business. Dr. Joshi is a fellow of the International Business Institute. He is licensed to practice law and admitted to the following Bar memberships, both domestic and international: state of Washington (attorney), state of New 14

17 York (attorney and counselor at law) and the Province of Alberta, Canada (barrister and solicitor). He has practiced law for over 17 years and has had numerous administrative law-related case decisions published. In addition to his law degree (J.D., University of Idaho), Dr. Joshi holds degrees in economics (University of Calgary) and in business (finance) (Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary). He is a business owner both domestically and internationally. He has served as faculty advisor and team coach for the College of Business annual student team entry in the Consortium of Undergraduate International Business Educators (CUIBE) Global Case Competition (Boston, MA). Dr. Joshi conducts book reviews upon request for WSU Business faculty (e.g. governance) and major publishers. He most recently completed a comprehensive international law textbook review for Wolters Kluwer Publishers. He is a reviewer for the WSU Writing Portfolio, and is part of the planning committee/ administration for WSU s annual Business Ethics Symposium. K.D. Joshi, Ph.D. K.D. Joshi is a professor in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship. She received her Master of Science in engineering from the University of Michigan and received her Ph.D. in business administration (decision science and information systems) from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Joshi s research interests focus on knowledge management, innovation, and information technology (IT) workforce issues. Her research on knowledge management is cited over 1,000 times, and she has received multiple research grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to conduct her research. Her research examines several issues including how IT capabilities enable firm and innovation; understanding knowledge sharing and transfer within groups and firms, and recruitment, retention and advancement of IT workforce. Dr. Joshi has taught the Ph.D. Seminar as well as MBA and undergraduate courses on topics including IT strategy, business intelligence, web application, development and object-oriented programming. She has won multiple teaching innovation grants and is currently writing a book on business intelligence. Her engineering and 15

18 business education backgrounds allow her to design and deliver technology-related courses which have a unique blend of both technical and managerial focus. Gene Lai, Ph.D. Dr. Gene Lai earned his Ph.D. in risk management and insurance and finance from the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently department chair for the Department of Finance and Management Science as well as a Safeco Distinguished Professor of Insurance. Dr. Lai s finance expertise in is the areas of market efficiency and corporate finance. He also has expertise in risk management and insurance. Dr. Lai is a member of the American Risk and Insurance Association, Asia Pacifica Risk and Insurance Association, Financial Management Association, Risk Theory Society, and Western Risk and Insurance Association. His primary research focuses on alternative risk financing, efficiency issues, underwriting cycles, stock repurchase, dividend policy, and corporate governance. Babu (Lourduraj) John Mariadoss, Ph.D. Dr. Babu (Lourduraj) John Mariadoss earned his Ph.D. in marketing from the University of Houston and is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Marketing. His marketing expertise is in the areas of interfirm relationships, sales management, and strategic marketing. He is a member of the Academy of Marketing Science, American Marketing Association, Industrial Management and Purchasing Group, Product Development Management Association and the Institute for Supply Management. Dr. Mariadoss primary research is focused on business to-business markets, and brand extensions. He is currently a Marketing Club advisor, and an editorial review board member for the Journal of Personal Selling & Sales Management, Industrial Marketing Management, and the Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management. 16

Muehling, Ph.D. Dr. Muehling is professor and chair of the Department of Marketing at WSU where he has been a faculty member since He received his Ph.D. in business administration (emphasis in marketing) from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in His undergraduate and graduate teaching responsibilities at WSU have been in the areas of promotion management and principles of marketing. He has received numerous teaching awards since joining the faculty at WSU. Dr. Muehling s primary research interests have focused on various dimensions of advertising/communications theory and practice, including nostalgia, comparative advertising, negative attack advertising, fine-print, and involvement. His research has appeared in numerous journals such as the Journal of Advertising, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Current Issues & Research in Advertising, International Journal of Advertising, Psychology and Marketing, Journal of Public Policy and Marketing, Journal of Business Research, as well as in the proceedings of national conferences for the American Academy of Advertising, American Marketing Association and the Association for Consumer Research. He has served as a reviewer for a number of academic journals and promotion management textbooks and has held several leadership positions, including President for the American Academy of Advertising. Donna L. Paul, Ph.D. Dr. Paul is an associate professor of finance at Washington State University. She received a bachelor s degree in management studies from the University of the West Indies, an MBA from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. Dr. Paul teaches corporate finance courses at the undergraduate, MBA, and Ph.D. levels, and conducts research on corporate restructuring, capital structure, dividend policy, and corporate governance. Her research has been published in academic journals such as the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of International Business Studies, and Financial Management. Prior to joining the faculty at WSU, she was an assistant professor at Babson College from , and a financial analyst at the Petroleum Company of Trinidad and Tobago from

20 Zal Phiroz, MBA Zal Phiroz is an established specialist on global supply chain and project management practices within the fast moving consumer goods industry as well as the IT industry. He has held a number of executive and senior management roles, including time spent with Proctor & Gamble and TELUS. In his work at Procter & Gamble, Mr. Phiroz managed a number of key projects in partnership with Walmart, Target, Walgreens and CVS. In charge of both vertical and horizontal lines, he was responsible for quarterbacking various key initiatives leading to a cost savings of over $120M through the introduction of supply chain optimization initiatives and disruptive innovation techniques. Mr. Phiroz is a graduate of the University of Windsor s Computer Science program and holds an MBA in International Finance from Wayne State University. He taught courses at Harvard, UCLA and WSU. David E. Sprott, Ph.D. Dr. Sprott is associate dean for graduate, international and professional programs in the WSU College of Business and the Boeing / Scott and Linda Carson chaired professor of marketing at Washington State University, Pullman. He received his bachelor s of business administration from Kent State University in 1990 and his MBA from Kent in He earned a Ph.D. in marketing, with an emphasis on psychology and consumer decision-making, from the University of South Carolina in Professor Sprott s research interests include various issues related to consumer decision-making, social influence, information provision, and marketing public policy. His research has been published in the field s top journals including Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Consumer Psychology, Journal of Retailing, Marketing Letters, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, Psychology & Marketing, and Journal of Consumer Affairs.
