3 DELIVERING ON OUR MISSION During our 2012 fiscal year Carmen Pampa Fund provided: General Support s 741 men and women studied one of the five areas of study: Agronomy, Education, Nursing, Veterinary Science, and Ecotourism. The student body was comprised of 55% women. The College graduated 31 men and 32 women, who are now part of the UAC-CP s growing alumni association. The College developed a lecture series to engage UAC-CP alumni and the Bolivian business community. The series provided people with the opportunity to visit and learn about the UAC-CP and gave students access to professional networks and social capital. An average of 350 students participated in the College s Food Cooperative Program, which provides three healthy meals per day to UAC-CP students. The Program receives a special subsidy from Carmen Pampa Fund. Special Projects s The College completed the construction of a new public health clinic, which will provide government mandated and emergency health services to approximately 3,500 people living in 13 surrounding communities and two K-12 schools. It is already well utilized and much appreciated. Carmen Pampa Fund s Scholarship Partners Program provided 29 full tuition scholarships to students. It also provided special subsidies to keep tuition and housing costs to a minimum for a number of other UAC-CP students. The Joint Planning and Oversight Council (JPOC), a board including representatives from the College and CPF began the process of reviewing and renewing the College s by-laws and working on a joint fund-raising plan. The JPOC has also more closely engaged Catholic University in La Paz to help bring administrative depth and processes to the UAC-CP.

4 An important part of our work is fostering hope. Our students draw strength in the knowledge that there is a community of people who believe in them, that people so far away trust them to build a more just and more peaceful future for Bolivia. Dr. Hugh Smeltekop, Vice Director, UAC-CP VISIT OUR BLOGS by Sarah Mechtenberg by Hugh Smeltekop

5 Ayni: Working for the Common Good Ayni is the common practice among indigenous people of Bolivia when they work together to accomplish a shared goal. At Carmen Pampa Fund we define ayni (pronounced: eye-knee) simply as working for the common good. We believe our work to support the Unidad Académica Campesina-Carmen Pampa (UAC-CP), a college in rural Bolivia, exemplifies ayni. We believe that education is the most sustaining way to empower those we serve to contribute to social and economic development. By supporting the College with financial and human resources, we contribute to the common good by making lasting change through education; ensuring that people and communities in Bolivia can thrive. During the first semester of 2012, 714 students were enrolled across the College s five academic departments: Agronomy, Nursing, Ecotourism, Veterinary Science, and Education. All are areas strategically selected to enable graduates to respond to the immediate needs of people living in Bolivia s rural area. The College s focuses on research, production, community service, and leadership formation, empowers students to learn by doing. The construction of the College s new public health clinic this past April, for example, provides Nursing students with the opportunity to engage in supervised, practical experiences in public health while also offering important services to the approximately 3,500 people who live in the area. During our 2012 fiscal year, 63 students graduated from the UAC-CP. They join the growing number of UAC-CP alumni who are now working for the common good in a variety of capacities. Graduates are making positive contributions with the knowledge as well as practical and leadership skills they acquired at the College. Despite the College s growth and success, our net assets at CPF available for support of the College have decreased over the last two years primarily from decreases in public support. We believe the College s upcoming 20th anniversary year will serve as a catalyst to change this situation, but we need your continued support to make that happen. Thank you for investing in the lives of Bolivians. You have changed not only their lives, but the lives of their family members and the people living in their communities, as well. Together, we are all participating in ayni and working for the common good. Gracias. Tara L. Nolan Acting Executive Director Susan Vento Board Chair
