An Australian Centre for Allied Health Research and Evidence: a scoping study Professor Alison Perry Chair School of Human Communication Sciences La Trobe University, Australia
Background: Allied Health (AH) staff are still relatively young to research Considerable work is needed to develop and promote a research culture in clinical practice in Australia Many examples of good research(ers) but tend to be: Disorder-based (e.g., aphasia, stuttering, gait, etc) Within each profession, rather than cross-disciplines Not necessarily (yet?) fully integrated in terms of providing good evidence-based models of multi-disciplinary AH care
Background (cont): Healthcare is being transferred from hospitals to community or home settings, esp. chronic illness Changes to Australian health workforce Need for quality, integrated, managed healthcare Lack of available/accessible data about models of best practice in AH models either have not been developed or have not been scientifically tested Need to develop the research base necessary for underpinning models of good practice across AH
Approach to The Menzies Foundation

The Scoping study Theme 2: The Site Agreed: A physical presence (not just virtual ) A designated building, or a set of offices A degree of independence from hospitals or universities An academic-clinical interface Easy access via public transport, etc. Centrally located; City-centric but with nodes to rural/ other sites Excellent internet/virtual component
The Scoping study Theme 3: Governance Agreed: A degree of independence in its governance Auspiced (in some way) by The Menzies Foundation Appoint a charismatic, quality Professor-Director An independent Board to assist the director with advice, direction and focus A core of about 20 research staff for meaningful studies/research to happen Partnerships/ linkages across Hospitals, Universities, Community Health sectors, advocacy/charitable groups, private health sector Hybrid funding model - from State/Federal Government, Sponsors / Philanthropists, and a subscriber base shares?
