2 The Couple and Family Therapy Program at North Dakota State University is nationally recognized as a leading training program for its commitment to prepare scholars who are qualified to intervene in problems that are most relevant in today s world.

3 The Couple and Family Therapy Program is committed to training ethical, socially responsible, well-rounded scholars who will be valuable assets to both the couple and family therapy field and the communities they serve. All aspects of the program s training are centered in feministinformed and social justice principles to help students develop the skills and competence necessary to work with diverse and marginalized communities as researchers, supervisors and clinicians. Students will use those skills to create meaningful social change at local, national and international levels. The couple and family therapy program at NDSU has clearly made a significant and lasting impact on the field of family therapy. Their efforts to raise the visibility of the need for training programs to make the issues of diversity and social justice central to training of all couple and family therapists are deserving of recognition and is a model for the entire field of couple and family therapy. 4 Preparing future scholars Our faculty is committed to developing the next generation of scholars in the field of couple and family therapy through a dedicated mentoring process that prepares students for future leadership roles in academic and research settings as well as clinical administration and supervision. The program is particularly committed to training scholars who have the potential to lead the field of couple and family therapy to be more inclusive of marginalized communities and embrace the values and ethics associated with social justice. 5 State-of-the-art facilities The NDSU Couple and Family Therapy Program s training facility the Family Therapy Center features dedicated space for graduate students and four therapy rooms with adjoining observation rooms for live supervision. It also has an advanced HD-quality digital recording system that can be used to perform clinical process research and provides student therapists and supervisors with unprecedented access to their clinical work. LGBT-affirmative training NDSU is committed to providing an LGBTaffirmative environment for all students, faculty, staff and clients who use our on-campus therapy center. The NDSU Couple and Family Therapy Program is recognized as a leader in the field for teaching students the knowledge and skills associated with becoming LGBT-affirmative researchers, supervisors and therapists.

6 Program requirements Students entering the program must have: completed a master s degree in a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education taken at least one course in statistics and research methods with a minimum B grade, and completed an empirical master s thesis. In addition to regular course requirements, students need to complete the following: 250 hours of clinical contact in the on-campus therapy center 180 hours of supervisory experience One year of research, teaching or clinical internship experience A scholarly portfolio that includes: at least two proposals/abstracts for presentations at national conferences Submission of at least two manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals A comprehensive/preliminary examination Produce and defend a dissertation Application information The deadline to apply for the Couple and Family Therapy Doctoral Program is Jan. 1. Financial assistance We are committed to offering every student accepted into the program a full tuition waiver plus a stipend for a graduate assistantship. Assistantship opportunities are available for both research and teaching.
