Host institutions, description and responsibilities within the Doctoral Program 1.1. The Doctoral Program Numerical Simulations in Technical Sciences brings together scientists from Applied Mathematics, Scientific Computing and Technical Sciences of Graz University of Technology (TUG) and Karl Franzens University Graz (KFU). The aim of the Doctoral Program is to provide an excellent education for doctoral students in the interdisciplinary fields of AppliedMathematics, Scientific Computing, and Technical Sciences. The Doctoral Program is supported by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). Therefore all rules of the FWF apply The Doctoral Program is affiliated with the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (TUG), Faculty of Civil Engineering (TUG), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Economics (TUG), Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (TUG), Faculty of Sciences (KFU) The organs of the Doctoral Program are the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, the Board of Directors, the Assembly of All Members, the Assembly of All Doctoral Students, and the General Assembly. 2. Faculty of the Doctoral Program (Members) 2.1. The Faculty of the Doctoral Program consists of all individual applicants for the Doctoral Program Numerical Simulations in Technical Sciences as listed in the proposal which has been accepted by the FWF for funding.

2 2.2. Postdoctoral scientists working in the interdisciplinary fields of Applied Mathematics, Scientific Computing and Technical Sciences may join the Doctoral Program as associated members. The membership has to be confirmed by the General Assembly of All Members with a simple majority vote. Applications have to be sent to the speaker in advance Members of the Doctoral Program are required to take part actively in the scientific and educational work of the Doctoral Program. Activities include guest lectures, seminars, workshops, and the dissemination of the Doctoral Program A member may leave the Doctoral Program by informing the Speaker. With the leave, all rights and obligations within the Doctoral Program will expire. Doctoral students assigned to the leaving member either need to have new supervisor appointed or they have to leave as well. The departure from the Doctoral Program does not discharge the member from obligations to the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) with respect to reporting. 3. Membership (Doctoral Students) 3.1. Students of the Doctoral Program financed by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) within this Doctoral Program or from other sources related to this Doctoral Program are members of the Doctoral Program All student positions within this Doctoral Program financed either by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) or from other sources will be advertised worldwide, e.g. via suitable electronic media. An essential criterion for the admission of a candidate is his/her ability to work in an interdisciplinaryway on oneof the topicsof this Doctoral Program. The Faculty of the Doctoral Program will do a preliminary selection of candidates to be invited for a hearing in Graz. The hearing consists of an oral presentation of each applicant on a subject of his/her choice, and an interview with at least three members of the Faculty of the Doctoral Program. The final decision is made by the Faculty of the Doctoral Program Doctoral students of members of the Faculty working in the interdisciplinary field of Applied Mathematics, Scientific Computing and Technical Sciences may join the Doctoral Program as associated doctoral student members. This has to be confirmed by the Assemblyof All Members with a simple majority vote. Applications have to be sent to the Speaker in advance Each doctoral student of this interdisciplinary Doctoral Program will have at least two supervisors from different disciplines listed in the project topics of the research proposal. The student will be affiliated with the institute/department of the first supervisor who represents the scientific discipline of the student In general, the doctoral curricula of the affiliated universities, and therefore of the associated doctoral schools apply All student members of the Doctoral Program are encouraged to take part actively in the relevant courses, seminars, and workshops. This also includes the active participation in international workshops and conferences, and stays abroad. Dates and places for the latter are coordinated in cooperation with the supervisors and with the Board of Directors The membership of a doctoral student ends with the final doctoral examination. Moreover, a student can be expelled by two thirds majority vote of the General Assembly of the Doctoral

3 Program. A reason for such a decision may be an insufficient cooperation of the student within the Doctoral Program. The final decision requires two previous warnings that were given to the student in writing with an explanation of the reasons. Applications for expulsions have to be sent to the Board of Directors. With the expulsion of the doctoral student the financial support from the Doctoral Program ends as well A doctoral student may leave the Doctoral Program by informing the Speaker. With the leave, all financial support will be stopped. 4. Rights and responsibilities of the members and doctoral students 4.1. Board of Directors The Board of Directors of the Doctoral Program consists of the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, and between two and four additional members from the group of the Faculty and the associated members. All elected members of the board must be scientists at one of the participating universities The Speaker of the doctoral students and the Deputy Speaker are advisory members of the Board of Directors The Board of Directors is elected by the Assembly of All Members (faculty, associated members) by secret ballot. The election of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker must be done seperately while all other members of the Board may be elected at once. Candidates are elected if they get the absolute majority of all valid votes. If this majority is not reached in the first ballot, two candidates with the most votes will run in a second ballot where a simple majority is sufficient. If all remaining members of the Board are elected at once, they are elected as ranked The term of the Board is the same as the period of funding, usually three years. After three years, new elections are required. Re election is possible. If a successful candidate does not accept his/her election, a new election is required The Speaker and the Deputy Speaker can be dismissed with a majority of 2/3 of the Assembly of All Members (faculty and associated members) Duties of the Board of Directors The Speaker represents the Doctoral Program. He/She is responsible for organizing the meetings of the Board of Directors and the assemblies, where he/she has to report about his/her work The Board of Directors prepares a fiscal plan according to the general rules of the Austrian Research Fund (FWF). In particular, the Board of Directors is responsible for the allocation of the budget according to the proposal The Board of Directors can dispose up to 5000 Euro per month from the available budget. The Speaker has to report on this in the General Assembly The Board of Directors is responsible for all activities of the Doctoral Program The Board of Directors is responsible for the reports of all project parts and has to publish an annual report on the work within the Doctoral Program.

4 The Board of Directors will have regular meetings. The Speaker or the Deputy Speaker is responsible for their organisation Assembly of All Members (Faculty and Associated Members) The Assembly decides on the acceptance of new members, both associated members and associated doctoral students. Moreover, the Assembly discusses the scientific program, in particular when preparing the next proposal The Assembly decides on the allocation of the available budget if the Board of Directors is not responsible The Assembly is responsible for the election of the Board of Directors. A quorum is constituted if half of all members are present. If this quorum is not reached, the Assembly can be repeated with the same agenda after 7 days, regardless of how many members are present. An Assembly has has to be organised within four weeks if 1/3 of all members vote for it. The agenda of the Assembly has to be made known to all members at least three days prior to the meeting. Any member of the Assembly may propose a topic for the agenda at least three days before the meeting The Assembly of All Members has to take place at least once per semester General Assembly The General Assembly consists of all faculty, all associated members, all doctoral students financed by this Doctoral Program, and all associated doctoral students. The General Assembly meets at least once per semester. A General Assembly has to be organised within four weeks if 1/2ofeitherallmembersorofalldoctoralstudents vote for it. The General Assembly reports on the work in the Doctoral Program and should be a forum for discussion of related problems Assembly of all Doctoral Students The Assembly of All Doctoral Students consists of all students funded by this Doctoral Program and all associated students. The Assembly of All Doctoral Students is a forum of the doctoral students The first Assembly of All Doctoral Students is organized by the Speaker. On the first meeting, a speaker and a deputy speaker of the doctoral students will be elected. The same rules as in apply. The term is one year The assemblyof all doctoralstudentshas to take place at least once per semester. Moreover, all rules stated in apply It is recommended to meet in parallel with the status seminar. 5. Curriculum 5.1. The curricula for doctoral studies of Technical Sciences at Graz University of Technology and the curricula for doctoral studies of Natural Sciences at Karl Franzens University Graz apply Each doctoral student of this Doctoral Program is affiliated with the doctoral school that the first supervisor representing the scientific discipline of the student belongs to.

5 5.3. Within the Doctoral Program a seminar Numerical Simulations in Technical Sciences will be organized. This seminar includes both an Introductory Seminar in the first year, and two Doctoral Seminars in the other two years Within the Doctoral Program, both introductory and advanced lectures will be organized Once per semester, a status seminar of the Doctoral Program has to be organized. It is planned to haveone seminarper year in Graz and theother one somewhere else. There, the doctoral students report on their ongoing work. Thus a general monitoring of all doctoral students is possible. Based on the students presentations, the current working plans will be discussed. Moreover, new interdisciplinary aspects as well as problems of interest in different projects can be pointed out. 6. General remarks 6.1. All members and all doctoral students of this Doctoral Program are encouraged to report on their work at international workshops and conferences Scientific publications which result from the work in this Doctoral Program have to include an acknowledgement that the work was done within the Doctoral Program Numerical Simulations in Technical Sciences These rules may be changed by the Assembly of All Members with a 2/3 majority vote.
