Nancy Rothwell I welcome you all graduands, family members and friends to e University of Manchester for this degree congregation. is is a time of celebration and i hope you enjoy this special occasion. For those of you graduating today, this is also a perfect time to reflect on your time here at Manchester, to think about your successes, achievements and the excitement of the next stage of your journey. As you are presented for conferment of your degree, the University shares with you a great sense of pride in the award you have worked so hard to attain. I encourage you to take charge of your future, find your voice and form your own opinions. Have confidence in the knowledge and experience you have gained during your time here and, as you collect your degree, know you are ready to take on your next challenge and shape your own future. These ceremonies mark not the end of your relationship with the University but the start of a new chapter. You are now part of a worldwide network and it is my hope that the links between you and the University will grow stronger as you become an active member of one of the largest global alumni communities. 5 Highlights was an eventful year for the University. Here are some of the highlights that made news. Germ trap technology could protect us against the flu In March 2016 The University of Manchester and scientists at biotech company Virustatic developed a fabric coating which isolates viruses responsible for seasonal and pandemic influenza. MBS becomes Alliance MBS; precinct bridge demolished in August The iconic precinct bridge was demolished in August The 46-year-old bridge was taken down as part of a project to make room for improved student and staff facilities, and to provide 40,500 sq ft of new retail and leisure facilities for the new Alliance MBS. World s first bionic eye transplant Manchester Professor Paulo Stanga conducted the world s first bionic transplant in July The four hour operation implanted a device to convert video images from a miniature camera installed in his glasses. According to the team, the germ trap has a capture rate for the virus - which affects millions of people across the world, sometimes severely- of greater than 99%. The germ trap - which can be added to filters in masks or air filtration systems - is completely harmless and cheap to produce. Lemn Sissay becomes Chancellor in 2015 Writer and broadcaster Lemn Sissay MBE was elected as the next Chancellor of The University of Manchester. An award-winning poet, he s also the author of articles, records, radio documentaries and public art. Jodrell Bank part of BBC broadcast as Tim Peake becomes first Briton to walk in space A historic milestone in British space exploration was shared by experts and guests at The University of Manchester s Jodrell Bank as part of a planned special BBC broadcast. Whitworth wins VisitEngland award The University of Manchester s Whitworth won gold at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence in the large visitor attraction category in March 2016 The gallery in the park which reopened in March after a 15 million transformation beat a range of renowned competitors such as Chester Zoo, SS Great Britain and Salisbury Cathedral. The largest renovation in its 125-year history, which doubled its former size, with a new glass wing overlooking Whitworth Park resulted in record-breaking visitor figures. Tim Peake carried out the first ever spacewalk by a British astronaut on Friday 16 January 2016 to venture outside the International Space Station to replace a failed voltage regulator. 6 DEGREE CONGREGATIONS DECEMBER

6 Outstanding Alumni Awards Outstanding Alumni Awards are presented to former students who have achieved particular distinction in their field, or who have demonstrated exemplary service to the University or wider community. Karen O Neill BNurs (Hons)Nursing 2003; MA Humanitarianism and Conflict Response 2012 Karen O Neill is a senior nurse experienced in emergency care and humanitarian aid. She graduated from the University of Manchester with a Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) in Since then, her time has been split between emergency-department nursing across Greater Manchester and humanitarian aid and disaster response overseas. In 2009, Karen began an eight-month spell working as a volunteer nurse at a hospital in Gulu, Uganda. Later, she returned to the hospital to deliver teaching on acute illness management and nursing skills. More recently, she travelled to the country s south-west with the charity Medcare, who run a paediatric healthcare centre and programmes to support children with chronic illnesses. As a member of the UK International Emergency Trauma Register (UKIETR), Karen was deployed to the Philippines with Save the Children in late 2013 after typhoon Haiyan devastated much of the country. With help from the British Navy, her team spent two weeks visiting remote islands and attending to the emergency medical needs of the local population. Her role with the UKIETR has also seen her participate in training in Mumbai s inner-city slums. Karen s more recent experience includes working for the nongovernmental organisation UK-Med as a medical adviser on the National Ebola Response Programme. Her role with UK-Med evolved, and she later led the training of UK clinicians in Malawi. She also helped with the provision and training of on-call emergency medical teams to respond to global humanitarian disasters. In 2012, Karen completed a masters degree in humanitarianism and conflict response atthe University of Manchester. Gareth Owen OBE BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering 1990 Gareth Owen has spent a quarter of a century working in humanitarian aid. From Somalia and Angola through to Uganda, Kosovo, Pakistan and Syria, he has witnessed the world s most testing and devastating crisis environments. But it was in Manchester where Gareth built the foundations of what has proven to be an inspirational career. He graduated in 1990 with a BEng in Civil Engineering before moving south to secure an MSc in Irrigation Engineering from the University of Southampton. After joining Concern Worldwide, Gareth was quickly exposed to the realities of humanitarian work. Roles in logistics and security management took him to conflict areas in Somalia and Angola, followed by a switch to Nepal and a stint as water engineer with VSO. As his knowledge grew, so too did the size of his challenges. He was appointed country director in Uganda and head of mission in Kosovo during a spell with Action Contre la Faim. In 2001, he ran Oxfam s response to the Gujarat earthquake in India. The following year, he joined Save the Children UK and in April 2007 he was appointed as the charity s humanitarian director. As a senior humanitarian practitioner, he has led operational responses to every major emergency over the last 15 years including the Iraq conflict (2003), Asian tsunami (2004), and East Africa drought (2011). He is co-founder of the Humanitarian Leadership Academy, the START Network and ELRHA, and now leads a department of more than 200 staff. Gareth was awarded an OBE in 2013 for services to emergency crisis response abroad. 8 DEGREE CONGREGATIONS DECEMBER

7 Outstanding Academic Achievement Awards President s Doctoral Scholars the University of Manchester award for Outstanding Academic Achievement is awarded to the top students in each graduating year based solely on academic performance and consists of a certificate presented at graduation and a cheque for 1,000. The prestigious award reflects the exceptional performance of the individual graduates during their time at The University of Manchester. Each year The University of Manchester presents the President s Doctoral Scholar Award, the highest accolade bestowed upon members of our postgraduate researcher community. it is awarded to approximately 3% of our research students who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential.
