3 WATER HYGIENE WATER HYGIENE, LEGIONELLA AND PSEUDOMONAS WATER HYGIENE WATER HYGIENE There are a wide range of potential contaminants which can adversely affect water quality and subsequently pose a significant risk to public health. These include waterborne disease causing pathogens such as Cryptosporidium, E. coli, Staphylococcus Aureus, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and Legionella bacteria. These waterborne pathogens can be commonly found in and often colonise engineered water systems such as swimming pools, spa baths, drinking water supplies, domestic and process water systems. The most notable of the water borne pathogens is Legionella bacteria. Found naturally in soil and water courses, this bacterium is the causative agent of Legionnaires Disease, a progressive and potentially fatal form of pneumonia whereby infection is caused by the inhalation of contaminated water droplets. Sources of the disease are commonly associated with domestic hot and cold water systems and cooling towers, resulting in approximately 250 deaths per annum in the UK. Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, also found naturally in soil and water courses is becoming increasingly recognised as emerging opportunistic water borne pathogen and represents a significant risk of fatal infection in Neo Natal and other augmented care facilities within the Healthcare Sector. The Health Protect Agency has recorded in the region of 3,700 to 4,000 cases per year in the UK. Both Legionella and Pseduomonas bacteria can proliferate in water systems that are inadequately designed and/or maintained which can result in the occurrence of stagnant water and contamination with organic matter in the form of scale, rust, bio films and sedimentary deposits. This includes the prevention of potentially fatal water borne pathogens, the prevention of scale, corrosion and the maintenance of optimum performance conditions in industrial water systems and the control of waste waters for the protection of the environment. Our micro biological control services include the installation and maintenance of bespoke water treatment solutions designed to prevent infection from water borne pathogens such as Legionella and Pseudomonas bacteria in a wide range of water systems e.g. domestic hot and cold water systems, drinking water systems, ornamental water features, spa baths and swimming pools humidification systems and cooling towers. Our Industrial Water service includes the installation, maintenance and testing of bespoke scale and corrosion control solutions to ensure the safe and efficient operation of plant and equipment critical such as steam boilers, cooling towers, humidification, water softening and closed loop heating and cooling systems. This is often as a direct result of inadequate assessment of the risk or failing to undertake remedial actions required, failure to implement suitable and sufficient maintenance regimes and plans. Fires cost UK businesses millions of pounds each year, from damage to property, loss of business, fines, compensation claims and increased insurance premiums. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO) came into effect in October 2006 and applies to all nondomestic premises in England, Scotland and Wales, including the communal areas of dwellings in multiple occupation. 7 ASBESTOS ASBESTOS GUIDANCE AND TECHNICAL STANDARDS con td ASBESTOS Asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate mineral which became increasingly popular among manufacturers and builders from the 1940 s onwards. This is due to its resistance to heat, electricity and chemical damage as well as its sound absorption and tensile strength. It has been used in a significant number of applications including wiring, roofing tiles and insulation and the HSE now estimates that over 500,000 commercial, industrial and public properties throughout the UK contain asbestos. Asbestos is known to have toxicity and the danger occurs when working on or near damaged asbestos-containing materials and the resultant inhalation of asbestos fibres. Once inhaled, these fibres can cause serious diseases (including mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis) which are responsible for around 4,000 deaths per year in the UK alone. This affects all persons or organisations that have a clear responsibility for the maintenance or repair of nondomestic premises

Climate change is continuing to have a significant and increasing effect on the world economy and the environment. Under the Kyoto Protocol, by 2012 the UK must reduce its baseline emissions of six major greenhouse gases by 12.5 per cent from a baseline target set in The draft Climate Change Bill commits the UK to reductions in CO 2 emissions of at least 26% by 2020 and a long term goal of an 80% reduction by As a result the UK government has created new legislation and introduced a range of new initiatives aimed at reducing carbon usage. Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) are now required in all properties - homes, commercial and public buildings - when bought, sold, built or rented. Display Energy Certificates (DEC) are now required in all public buildings exceeding 1000m 2 of useful floor space, extending to all public buildings exceeding 250m 2 from December Air Conditioning Energy Assessments (ACEA) is now essential in all existing air conditioning systems over 250kW in homes, commercial and public buildings. The first inspection of all air conditioning systems over 12kW must have been completed by January The next phase of the legislation has now taken place. From the 6 April 2012 all ACEA reports must be logged on the Communities and Local Government Database, covering all buildings that have more than 12kW of cooling capacity of air conditioning installed. After the initial assessment these systems need to be re-assessed every five years. New air conditioning systems installed after January 2008 must be inspected within five years of being put into service. Revisions to part F (ventilation) and L (fuel and energy conservation) of the Building Regulations 2006 have set new maximum carbon emission targets for whole buildings. The regulations apply both to the construction of new buildings and renovation of existing buildings (with a total surface floor space area over 1,000m).
