It has its advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, we have the tools by which to evaluate the new place. On the other hand, we are not objective. We don t see the new place for what it really is, but we keep in mind the 51

5 ANGIELSKI DOOKOŁA ŚWIATA good sides of the places we ve already seen. It is interesting that the more we travel, the less we see the differences in geography, weather, environment, and the more we see the differences in people, their customs and lifestyles. GLOSSARY to compare porównać tool narzędzie to evaluate oceniać the good side dobra strona the bad side zła strona for what it is takim, jakie jest advantages and disadvantages wady i zalety to keep in mind pamiętać, zachować w pamięci the more... the less im bardziej... tym mniej environment środowisko EXERCISE 1 Complete the sentences, using Present Continuous. 6 TEKSTY I ĆWICZENIA EXERCISE 2 One of the sentences from the pair (Present Perfect or Past Simple) is incorrect. Underline the correct one. 1. I have already compared both destinations. / I have compared both destinations yet. 2. Have you been to Bali? / Has you been to Bali? 3. I have found more advantages than disadvantages of travelling to Cyclades Islands this summer. / I found many more advantages than disadvantages of travelling to Cyclades Islands this summer. 4. He has ever been objective. / He has never been objective. 5. They travelled lately to Naxos. / Last week they travelled to Naxos. TEXT II Whenever I travel to somewhere new, I catch myself saying, It s exactly like in Kosarzyska in Beskid Sądecki! Colombo looks exactly like Lagos. The same thing happened to me in Paris! Whether we like it or not, we make comparisons to past experiences and destinations we ve visited. It gives us a frame of reference by which we evaluate a new place. The bad side is that it can leave us with a less-than-open mind and biased eyes through which we see our new locations. Instead of seeing the place for what it is, we keep in mind the advantages of other places we ve been to. Our attitude to the new place will never be objective. The more I travel, the less I notice the physical differences in geography, environment and surroundings; the more I see the differences in people, cultures, behaviours and lifestyles. So if I catch myself saying all too frequently, Oh, this is so like Kosarzyska, Lagos, Paris, does that mean I don t appreciate a place for what it is? I m not sure, but I sometimes wish I didn t do this. GLOSSARY to catch oneself on sth złapać się na czymś to make comparisons robić porównania past experiences przeszłe doświadczenia 53
