2 ENCAPSULATING ASBESTOS ROOFING WITH TSW Cleaning of asbestos roofing by means of a high pressure pump has been outlawed in the UK, USA and Australia and many other first world countries owing to the unacceptably high volume of fibres which are released into the atmosphere. In South Africa the Dept of Labour is aware of the dangers encountered when cleaning asbestos roofing and are prepared to support those companies who are being proactive in looking for an environmentally approved method for the cleaning of their roofs. Using TSW we advise the following procedure. Apply TSW anti fungal to a pre wet roof, diluted 5 parts water to 1 sachet, spray onto roof and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse with water while scrubbing with brooms. Filters must be attached to all downpipes, thus ensuring the filtration of all residue. When making use of a pressure gun for cleaning, the nozzle should have a deflector attached to it to ensure that the contaminated water is deflected onto the roof and into the gutters. Alternatively, make use of a canopy or hood to contain the overspray. When the roof has no guttering lay Biddum cloth on the ground surrounding the building. This will act as a filter while allowing excess water to pass through. Overspray will contain fibres and must be treated with TSW. Once the roof has been washed, TSW is to be applied in concentrate form. This will ensure that all fibres have been bound and encapsulated. The process will seal the roof and prevent fungus from gaining a substantial foothold. TSW is a very good prep for paint and will reduce the quantity required. All surrounds of the building must be sprayed with TSW in order to ensure encapsulation of any stray fibres.

3 TSW covers between 5-7 square metres per litre. The spread rate will be determined by the age and state of the roof. Product can be applied via an airless spray gun or a low pressure backpack sprayer. Apply TSW in a sweeping motion, back and forth until the product is no longer absorbed into the roof. The roofing can now be left as is, or paint can be applied after 72 hours. HELPLINE Chris Davidson. 4 Solution:First spray TSW into the ceiling area ( crawl space ) to lock down loose fibres which will be lying in the attic area. Thereafter spray TSW onto the underside and edges of the ceiling boards during removal. There are three reasons, from a total environmental standpoint, to encapsulate rather than remove asbestos: 1. Encapsulation is more effective. It can completely penetrate and bridge all types of surfaces. Asbestos cannot be entirely removed, since airborne fibres remain long after removal. Further, asbestos, if properly contained, provides excellent insulation. 2. Encapsulation is safe, easy and quick. It presents no hazard to workers or occupants. Removal, on the other hand, is arduous, time consuming and hazardous, since airborne particles are an ever present danger. Abatement work still requires at least one treatment of encapsulation once the asbestos has been removed. 3. Encapsulation is cost effective. It costs 25% to 50% less to encapsulate than to remove asbestos. Asbestos itself is not a problem, nor is removal the answer. It is exposure to asbestos fibres that presents the hazard, and encapsulation provides the solution.
