5 Lessons Learned: IT Security Establish and ensure firm compliance with uniform Information Technology (IT) Security designs, policies and practices WAN and LAN sharing Certification & Accreditation Documentation Data Storage Physical and Logical separation Solve Security Issues Components/agencies need to share infrastructure; virtualize and move toward private cloud model Need mutually acceptable approach to Information Security (INFOSEC) Standardize Clearance Process 5

6 Lessons Learned: DR & WAN Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Ensure that contract terms allow for and provide cross-data center Disaster Recovery (DR) Consider that DR is located outside your data center Consider the bandwidth needed to support traffic WAN Bandwidth/Capacity Determine the source and method of funding for circuits Identify who will control circuit usage and how will be managed Consider the impact to IT Security 6

7 Lessons Learned: Migration Planning & Implementation Inventory First Visit locations to conduct data collection and report findings Obtain rack numbers and specific application system information during initial data collection Data calls tend to produce inconsistent and contradictory information Data Center Control Control of migrating data centers should reside with those responsible for migration Migration losers those that lose infrastructure and revenue will delay migration efforts 7

8 Lessons Learned: Migration Planning & Implementation Streamline the engagement process One-entry and one-face Identify application criticality levels using well accepted methods and processes Most migrations take place on a system by system basis 8

9 Lessons Learned: Contract Vehicle & Terms Utilize the most flexible contract vehicle available in a data center environment Basic data center actions, such as server installation, must be priced and easy to buy and use All contracting actions process through a centralized knowledgeable core team 9

10 Lessons Learned: Financial Establish the source and method of funding for data center carrying costs prior to construction or purchase Build it and they will come is an ineffective strategy Determine real baseline costs for existing data centers Develop a full cost model of current data center operations Costs are needed to benchmark new services and to allow reallocation of savings Agency Chief Financial Officer should lead and enforce data collection efforts 10

11 Lessons Learned: Financial Establish clear fees and procedures for service authorities Distribution of migration funding to Components should be controlled by Department Maintain firm control of ongoing agency IT spending for other Data Center Services such as: Equipment Power Hosting Construction 11
