We cover virtually every specialty and subspecialty in health care. Detailed, up-to-date information about our specialists is available in our online physician directory at uconndocs.uchc.edu. Our Cutting-Edge Department of Surgery A letter from David W. McFadden, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.S., Department of Surgery Chair As the chair of the Department of Surgery, I have an intimate knowledge of and great appreciation for the depth and breadth of the interdisciplinary surgical services and patient-centered treatment options offered at the UConn Health Center. Our general treatment philosophy combines supreme, compassionate patient care; expert surgeons in their fields; state-of-the-art facilities and equipment; and the latest scientific research all of which creates an atmosphere in which patients and their families can be assured they are receiving the best surgical care possible. Health Center surgeons working in and across various specialties breast cancer/ surgical oncology, cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, neurosurgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and vascular surgery, among others use today s most advanced technologies and methodologies to perform often-complex robotic and CONTINUED ON next PAGE

The high caliber of recent faculty recruitments to our surgical ranks some of whom are profi led in this special issue of Consults underscores our ongoing commitment to strengthening the Health Center s surgical services and broadening our various teams. In short, we are committed to continually fi nding and hiring only the most talented surgeons in the country to serve our patients needs. We are the tertiary academic Department of Surgery for Connecticut. In addition to recruiting and retaining expert surgeons, we maintain a strong focus on research. In keeping with our standing as an academic department, at least one research component accompanies and informs every single related clinical activity in our department. Our surgeons take full advantage of the department s 10,000 square feet of facility space devoted exclusively to research and scientifi c study. What s more, our commitment to continuing knowledge is evidenced by our 40 full-time faculty members who actively participate in research and teach throughout the university. This university hospital model, which stresses research and scholarship along with exemplary patient care, is a big reason I chose to practice medicine here at the Health Center. But there were certainly other factors behind my decision: I originally came to UConn because I knew the Health Center was and is experiencing a time of promise, growth, innovation, and positive change and I knew I wanted to be at the forefront of that innovation, pushing for improvement in the surgical fi eld. And my time here since has shown me that UConn will always be driving innovation and change because that s what we do. I enjoy working somewhere where I can say, without any hesitation, that my colleagues in the state can be assured that they are referring their patients to the best surgeons in the region when they refer them to UConn Health Center. We will provide consultations for your patients within 24 hours of a request! In this special issue of Consults, you can learn more about our surgical services and specialists. We hope you will consider this information when making treatment decisions with your patients. We are committed, above all else, to working with you, our colleagues in the region, to provide the very best surgical care for all patients.
