2 Recommendation for Fiber Optics Network Extension (Spec. No.3479) December Page 2 of 2 RECOMMENDATION Glendale Water and Power {GWP} recommends that the City Council authorize the extension of the City's fiber optic cable in North Glendale from Glorietta Substation to Cooks Canyon Pump Station and authorize the issuance of GWP Specifications for the Fiber Optics Network North Extension and direct the City Clerk to advertise for bids to retain a contractor. SUMMARY In order to support the Smart Grid Distribution Automation project GWP needs to extend the existing fiber optics network into the Northern Glendale area. GWP needs to retain a contractor to install new overhead and underground cables and related equipment. Approval of the issuance of this Specification will allow GWP staff to choose the most qualified vendor with the lowest responsive bid. FISCAL IMPACT GWP staff estimates the cost of the extension of the fiber optics network into North Glendale at approximately $ Funds are available in the GWP Budget under Account No (Fund No. 553 Organization No. 931) Project No and Activity No. UE010 BACKGROUND GWP has a Fiber Optic network system comprised of over 20 miles of cables connecting each electric substation and selected water facilities to monitor control and protect equipment throughout the City of Glendale. GWP has begun the installation of distribution automation equipment and Tropos radios as part of the Smart Grid project. The abovementioned equipment and radios require fiber optic connections to substations for proper operation. EXHIBIT(S) Exhibit A: North Glendale Fiber Map

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE CALIFORNIA APPROVING THE EXTENSION OF FIBER OPTIC CABLE FROM THE GLORIETTA SUBSTATION TO COOKS CANYON PUMP STATION AND ADOPTING GLENDALE WATER AND POWER DEPARTMENT SPECIFICATIONS 3479 FOR FIBER OPTICS NORTH EXTENSION and WHEREAS the City of Glendale currently has a fiber optic cable infrastructure; WHEREAS in order to support the Smart Grid Distribution Automation project Glendale Water and Power Department (GWP) needs to extend the existing fiber optics network into the Northern Glendale area; and WHEREAS in order to install the new overhead and underground cables and related equipment for said extension GWP needs to retain a contractor. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE that GWP's recommendation and proposal as memorialized in its Report dated December for the extension of the fiber optic cable from the Glorietta Substation to Cooks Canyon Pump Station is hereby approved. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Specifications on file in the Electrical Engineering Section of GWP for Fiber Optics Network North Extension including the various documents Incorporated therein are hereby approved adopted designated and shall hereafter be known as Specifications No BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Ihe City Clerk is hereby directed to advertise for bids for work equipment and materials described in Specifications No adopted by this Resolution.
