2 Minor in Advertising (15 hours) Students in the advertising minor gain an understanding of the complex role of branding and how companies build successful brands through media and creative strategies to persuade a designated target audience. The advertising minor requires the following five courses: JRL 101 Introduction to Mass Comm. ONE of the following: ADV 201 Advertising and Society ADV 215 Principles of Advertising ADV 309 Advertising & Creativity ADV 409 Advertising Research & Media ADV 419 Advertising Strategies Minor in Public Relations (15 hours) Students in the public relations minor will learn to use a variety of communication strategies, tactics, and media to create a favorable image for clients. The public relations minor requires the following five courses: JRL 101 Introduction to Mass Comm. PR 215 Introduction to Public Relations PR 301 Writing for Public Relations PR 401 Applied Public Relations PR 410 IMC for Public Relations Minor in Health Promotion (15 hours) Students in the online health promotion minor learn to use a variety of communication strategies, tactics, and media to increase awareness, communicate outcomes, facilitate behavior change, prevent or impede the onset of disease, and develop environments that encourage and support positive healthy behaviors. 4 Minor in Advertising (15 hours) Imagine creating a 30-second spot for the Super Bowl or an interactive Internet campaign for a corporate client. The online advertising minor prepares students for a variety of careers in the fast-paced and exciting field of advertising. Typical job areas include advertising sales, graphic design, creative services, copywriting, media buying, account planning, and market research. Students in the advertising minor gain an understanding of the complex role of branding and how companies build successful brands through media and creative strategies to persuade a designated target audience. The advertising minor requires the following five courses: JRL 101 Introduction to Mass Communication, 3 hours Can be taken on campus or online. Course examines the mass communicator s role in developing political, social, and economic fabrics of a democratic society. Organization and function of newspapers, magazines, broadcast stations, and other principle media, including the role of advertising and public relations are reviewed. ONE of the following: ADV 201 Advertising and Society, 3 hours Can be taken on campus or online. As a social institution, advertising plays a critical role in our daily lives. This course will examine the social, economic, and legal aspects of advertising. ADV 215 Principles of Advertising, 3 hours Can be taken on campus or online. An introduction to all sides of the advertising field and to the process, quantitative, strategic, and aesthetic, by which the sales message is planned, produced, and delivered. ADV 309 Advertising & Creativity, 3 hours Prerequisites: JRL 101, ADV 215 (or ADV 201) Must be taken online. This course will examine advertising copy and design concepts. Students will develop their own advertisements and learn to critically analyze existing ad campaigns. ADV 409 Advertising Research & Media, 3 hours Prerequisites: JRL 101, ADV 215 (or ADV 201) Must be taken online. An introduction to the selection and evaluation of different media used in advertising campaigns. Students will learn to analyze and select audiences, compare media, and conduct media research. ADV 419 Advertising Strategies, 3 hours Prerequisites: JRL 101, ADV 215 (or ADV 201) Must be taken online. This course will introduce students to the concept of branding. 6 Minor in Health Promotion (15 hours) The online health promotion minor prepares students for a variety of careers in the growing field of health promotion and disease prevention. Typical job areas include healthcare marketing and communication for hospitals, health promotion for geriatric care facilities, health marketing for non-profits such as the American Lung Association, or health communication positions within the Department of Health and Human Services (e.g., CDC, NIH, FDA). A professional health promotion practitioner uses a variety of communication strategies, tactics, and media to increase awareness, improve knowledge, communicate outcomes, facilitate behavior change, prevent or impede the onset of disease, and develop environments that encourage and support positive healthy behaviors. Health promotion programs take place in many settings including: school, clinics, hospitals, workplaces, and community settings. The health promotion minor requires the following five courses: JRL 101 Introduction to Mass Communication, 3 hours Can be taken on campus or online. Course examines the mass communicator s role in developing political, social, and economic fabrics of a democratic society. Organization and function of newspapers, magazines, broadcast stations, and other principle media, including the role of advertising and public relations are reviewed. Definition and historical development, opportunities and challenges, techniques, and management of public relations included. An introduction to all sides of the advertising field and to the process, quantitative, strategic, and aesthetic, by which the sales message is planned, produced, and delivered. JRL 452 Applied Health Promotion, 3 hours Prerequisites: JRL 101, ADV 215 or PR 215 Must be taken online. Course consists of in-depth case studies of health communication messages with an emphasis on understanding how health communication audiences (e.g., elderly, minorities, children, women, etc.) are targeted and influenced by the messages. Additional topics include current and future uses of digital media in health communication, role and responsibilities of the mass media in providing messages intended to influence audiences, and legal and ethical concerns in health communication. JRL 454 Health Promotion Campaigns, 3 hours Prerequisites: JRL 101, ADV 215 or PR 215 Must be taken online. This course will apply IMC principles, theories, and techniques for multifaceted campaigns designed for health promotion and disease prevention. This course will look at both non-profit and public sector organizations that utilize IMC strategies to promote issues such as HIV/AIDS awareness, cancer screening, and child vaccinations. JRL 450 Writing for Health Promotion, 3 hours Prerequisites: JRL 101, ADV 215 or PR 215 Must be taken online. This writing-intensive course will look at the evolving field of health communication. Students will learn to write health messages for distinct audiences. Topics include: provider-patient communication; persuasive messages for social networks, social influence and social support; direct to consumer advertising; use of social media in health messaging; and the communication of risk and uncertainty. This course provides an introduction to and experience in writing for a wide range of public relations purposes. Students will improve writing skills as they become prepared to effectively communicate with various audiences in multiple formats. PR 401 Applied Public Relations, 3 hours Prerequisites: JRL 101, PR 215 Must be taken online. Course consists of in-depth case studies of public relations programs. Primary emphasis on successful campaigns, but unsuccessful efforts will also be examined for causes of failure. PR 410 IMC for Public Relations, 3 hours Prerequisites: JRL 101, PR 215 Must be taken online. This course seeks to describe the essential and interconnected role of Public Relations in Integrated Marketing Communication. Students will examine the attributes of successful IMC campaigns and the campaign mindset as it applies to employee relations, government affairs, reputation management, corporate social responsibility, trade relations, and much more. Students will also examine the value of sports journalism, the way sports function in society, and gain an understanding of ethics in sports journalism. PR 412 IMC for Sport, 3 hours Prerequisites: One of the following: ADV 201, ADV 215 or PR 215 This course seeks to describe the essential and interconnected role of Public Relations in Integrated Marketing Communication. Using sport-specific examples students will examine the attributes of successful IMC campaigns and the campaign mindset as it applies to sport promotion and communications. Three Courses from College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences (9 hours) Required Course SEP 271 Sport in American Society, 3 hours This course provides a comprehensive analysis of sport structures with a close view of who competes and the consequences of such competition. A major emphasis is placed on the sociological phenomena that contribute to sport in the United States. In-depth discussion of the apparent positive and negative consequences of the way sport is organized in society will occur. TWO of the following (6 hours) SM 426 Liability in Sport (Sport Law), 3 hours Recommended to complete SEP 271 before enrolling in this course. This course includes an in-depth study of professional sport leagues, their constitution, by laws, regulations, collective bargaining agreements, standard player contracts; legal issues involving sport agents. SM 485 Sport Management, 3 hours Recommended to complete SEP 271 before enrolling in this course. In this course students analyze management processes utilized in sport businesses. A focus is on the planning, organization, leading, and evaluation processes that are unique to the sport industry.
