Take Action Protect River Otters from Pollution Events! ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Ivy Dunlop 2001 Campus Ecology Fellow University of Oregon Project: Ivy helped develop a scorecard for measuring the sustainability of proposed landscape designs on campus. The university s current Campus Plan continues to value sustainable campus landscaping practices by requiring all development, redevelopment and remodeling on campus to incorporate sustainable design principles. What Ivy s Doing Now: Ivy earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in landscape architecture from the University of Oregon and is a LEED-accredited professional. Ivy is an Environmental Specialist and Landscape Architect for the City of Portland, Bureau of Environmental Services. She is on the Sustainable Stormwater Management Team where they work on a variety of CIP, demonstration and experimental projects that manage stormwater using vegetation. They integrate art, bike and ped safety and other livability goals into their projects. Most of Ivy's work is design and policy for vegetated stormwater management in the public right of way. Ivy on her Fellowship: My fellowship allowed me to research landscape sustainability on the University of Oregon campus. I have continued to pursue landscape sustainability in all of my jobs, and now have my dream job of doing amazing stormwater management project all the time! What are YOU up to? We love to hear all of the exciting and inspiring things NWF alumni are investing their time in. Let us know (cochranc@nwf.org) and you could be featured in the Alumni Spotlight. JOBS/OPPORTUNITIES Check out the NEW Sustainability Career/Job Resources list! (Brought to you by HEASC, DANS and the US Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development)
2 Director of Sustainability, Gonzaga University Spokane, WA The Director of Sustainability will develop and administer programs and provide advice on policies with the area of sustainability at Gonzaga University with the ultimate goal of fully implementing the University Climate Action Plan, creating a Comprehensive Sustainability Plan, and developing a culture of sustainability at the University. Director of Urban Forest Initiatives, American Forests The director of the urban forest initiatives is responsible for the following: 1) managing all urban forest-related activities, including promotion of the value of urban forests on the national level; 2) the Community ReLeaf Program; 3) directing all activities associated with federal, corporate and foundation grants associated with urban forest initiatives; 4) acting as the in-house expert on urban forestry issues; 5) collaborating with other departments on activities related to urban forests; 6) initiating, building and maintaining relationships with public and private partner organizations; (7) assist in raising funds to support the program. Endangered Species Science and Policy Analyst, Defender of Wildlife The endangered species science and policy analyst will work in the Washington, D.C. headquarters, helping the Endangered Species Policy Program implement its policy and field-based conservation initiatives. The program focuses on making implementation of the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) more effective and efficient at preventing extinctions and accelerating the recovery of listed species. This work covers nearly every aspect of the ESA, including recovery planning, listings, permitting, candidate species conservation, and state-federal partnerships and relationships. We seek an energetic, self-starter driven by opportunities to help apply science and policy to the design and implementation of creative but practical solutions to conserve endangered species within North America. Experience overseeing, contributing to, or implementing key components of endangered species programs in a state or federal wildlife agency, federal departments, other offices within the Executive Branch, or Congress is especially useful. IN THE NEWS In an historic moment for the planet and for US higher education, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is releasing its fifth assessment report (AR5) in three parts and will share a synthesis report over the course of the next 12 months (between September 2013 and October 2014). Campus Ecology Program Director, Julian Keniry, explores what this newest IPCC report means for the higher education community, read her blog, When Scientists Get Tattoos, Do Instructors Respond for Students? A Survey Inquires TAKE ACTION Protect River Otters from Pollution
3 River otters are extremely sensitive to pollution and after being almost entirely wiped out, they are now thriving in healthy waterways. But now countless streams and wetlands that flow into rivers are at risk of being polluted or even destroyed putting river otters at risk. The Supreme Court has questioned whether many small wetlands show be protected by the Clean Water Act and it is up to the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure these waters are once again protected. Scientists with the Environmental Protection Agency just completed a report on the importance of small streams and wetlands to downstream rivers. Now they need to hear from us that this strong science must not be ignored and it is time to protect wetlands and streams. Take Action! Tell the Environmental Protection Agency to use the strong science on wetlands and streams to protect them from pollution and destruction. EVENTS Building Climate Solutions:14th National Conference and Global Forum on Science, Policy and the Environment January 28-30, 2014 The 14th National Conference and Global Forum on Science, Policy and the Environment: Building Climate Solutions, organized by the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE), will engage over 1,200 key individuals from many fields of natural and social science, humanities and engineering, government and policy, business and civil society to develop actionable partnerships, strategies and tactics that advance solutions to minimize the impacts of anthropogenic climate change. Topics will include mitigation solutions to minimize the consequences of climate change and adaptation solutions for those consequences that cannot be avoided. We will consider both the built environment and agriculture & natural resources. Good Jobs Green Jobs Conference February 10-11, 2014 This year s Conference is focused on repairing the systems Americans rely on every day, whether getting us back and forth to work, supplying our power, keeping us safe from storms and floods, communicating with police and fire during emergencies, or ensuring the institutions where our children learn are safe and healthy. It's time to repair these systems today to create quality, familysustaining jobs, to address the threat of climate change, and to ensure the health and safety of our workplaces and our communities. Join thousands of business and community leaders, union members, and environmentalists at Good Jobs, Green Jobs 2014 and take up the call to Repair America. Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference March 3-4, 2014 Baltimore, MD The sharing economy: no place is this more evident than on our campuses. Students are rethinking vehicle ownership, swapping clothes, trading books, and participating in MOOCs. In other words, finding ways to make their limited funds go further. Campuses must also find opportunities to
4 conserve limited resources, make college more affordable, and make our communities more resilient to economic and environmental change. A sharing economy is leading to more sustainable consumption, operations, services, and lifestyles in our communities and on our campuses. Come share with us. Smart and Sustainable 2014 (SSCC) provides the time and space for dialogue on experiences and challenges in an open and collaborative environment. We have moved beyond show-and-tell presentations towards skill building, rich discussions and deep dives into the challenges and solutions facing our institutions.
