4 In The Spotlight Surry Graduate Now Works as Interpreter Sticy Saavedra is a Foreign Language Interpreter at the Surry County Health and Nutrition Center in Dobson. She assists Spanish-speaking patients who need healthcare assistance. Saavedra graduated from Surry Community College s Community Spanish Interpreter program in Sticy Saavedra moved to the United States from Guanajuato, Mexico, when she was only nine years old. In March of that year, she was enrolled in fourth grade at Franklin Elementary School in a totally English-speaking class. Initially, she only knew her colors and ABCs in English. Saavedra remembers crying when she came home from frustrating days at school because she could not understand what her teacher or classmates were saying. She did not want to go back to school. Her mother told her to write down three or four words that she had learned each day and told her to be patient. Being a quick learner, Saavedra was promoted to the fifth grade for the next year. She was in the school spelling bee in the sixth grade. Now that she is a Foreign Language Interpreter at the Surry County Health and Nutrition Center, Saavedra, 22, helps people every day who struggle with the same language barrier she faced as a child. She assists patients who are seeking dental, pediatric, primary care, family planning, and diabetes medical assistance with her interpreting skills. Interpreting is amazing, Saavedra said. I love being able to help people with the language barrier. There are a lot of Hispanics in the area, so there is a high need for interpreters. Most Hispanics know English, but they feel better with an interpreter. It s wonderful to be able to help them. I am also helping the providers help the patients. As interpreters, we feel like the voice of the patient. The patients are very appreciative. Being bilingual and knowing how to interpret a language are distinctly different skills. A bilingual person speaks more than one language fluently, but an interpreter knows the art of translation, which is to be exact stating only what is being said, nothing more or nothing less. As an interpreter, we also need to learn the backgrounds, cultures and the dialects people are using, Saavedra said. We must first know the person s culture and background. Then, when we translate, we must be thorough and say exactly what the patient has said. We also advocate for the patient and make sure the doctor has all the information. Interpreters have to become familiar with the terminology of a particular workplace, and in her area, Saavedra has learned medical terminology. Her classes helped to prepare her, but she knew that when she got a job as an interpreter it was her responsibility to learn the vocabulary for the particular job setting. With interpreting, you never stop learning because you learn different things for each job, she said. It s beautiful to know the language and at the same time learn new things about each specific job area. You need a love of learning to be successful in this field. Saavedra is a 2014 graduate of Surry Community College, having earned a degree in Community Spanish Interpreter. She started working for Surry County part-time in September 2014 and in March 2015 was hired full-time as an interpreter. I am very excited about my job. It s never boring. There s always something different with the subject matter and the different people, she said. I had been the interpreter for my family, and now I get to do it for other people. This job feels like a hobby to me. It s never a struggle to come to work. I love my job, and I enjoy my co-workers. As a determined and focused student, Saavedra worked full-time at Chile Rojo in Mount Airy where she waitressed while going to college after graduating from North Surry High School in She not only completed her goal of college studies, she excelled and was inducted into the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success with a 4.0 GPA. In the mornings, Saavedra attended classes and then she worked second shift at the restaurant until 11 p.m. Then, there was homework to do before starting the next day. She also There s a big need for interpreters especially in medical and business. It s a great add-on certificate. Being bilingual is always a plus with employers. worked long hours on the weekends. While in school, she completed a work-based learning ~ Sticy Saavedra internship at WorkForce Carolina where she saw the strong need for Spanish interpreting as well. There s a big need for interpreters especially in medical and business. It s a great add-on certificate. Being bilingual is always a plus with employers, she said. The instructors at Surry Community College were amazing. I recommend Surry and the Community Spanish Interpreter program. 5 In The Spotlight Demand For Spanish Interpreters On The Rise Laura Hudson is pictured working with a group of children when she was in the Dominican Republic for a mission trip in She taught high school Spanish for about nine years and did interpreting in high school before coming to Surry Community College two years ago to be an instructor. She teaches Spanish along with courses in the Community Spanish Interpreter program. She has also taught English as a Second Language at Surry. Hudson received an undergraduate degree in Spanish Education and a graduate degree in Romance Languages - Spanish Teaching from Appalachian State University. She has studied abroad in Spain and has traveled to Mexico and the Dominican Republic. With the increasing population of Hispanics/Latinos in the state and nearby localities, there is a growing need for bilingual speakers who are certified as Community Spanish Interpreters. The Hispanic/Latino population in North Carolina is 8.9 percent, and locally, the Hispanic community is even larger 10.5 percent in Yadkin County and 9.9 percent in Surry County, according to the 2013 US Census. In 2000, Hispanic/Latinos accounted for only 4.71 percent of North Carolina s population. Surry Community College instructors Jennifer Jimenez and Laura Hudson promote the Community Spanish Interpreter certificate as a way for students to make themselves more marketable in job searches. Adding the Community Spanish Interpreter certificate to your twoyear degree is a good use of your time because employers want to see what s different or better about you from all the other hundreds of applicants. Employers want to know what you have beyond the basics, said Jimenez who was previously employed as a pharmacy technician where being bilingual gave her an advantage over other applicants. The certificate proves the student s fluency and that they are skilled as an interpreter, Hudson said. A lot of businesses and organizations are looking for someone who is certified because employers are realizing that just because someone is bilingual doesn t mean they can interpret. The Community Spanish Interpreter certificate complements many programs nicely in the medical field including Nurse Aide, Nursing, Medical Assisting and Medical Office Administration. Anyone going into the medical area could benefit from this certificate because that is where a large need is for interpreters, as well as in the legal arena. Also, insurance, accounting, business and social services are areas where there is a need. Viticulture students and construction students at Surry Community College take Spanish classes for the workplace that are catered to their particular areas. The need for Spanish speakers is everywhere. Other areas needing Spanish speakers include Cosmetology, Paralegal, Automotive, Accounting, Business Administration, Early Childhood, and Criminal Justice, which are all offered at Surry Community College. The need for Spanish Interpreters is high in many areas, Jimenez said. Many businesses are discovering that they can cater to the Hispanic population and gain more customers by having bilingual employees, especially in the service areas. In the medical field, interpreters need to be certified in order to follow HIPAA laws, so working interpreters are now coming back to school to become certified. We do a lot of role playing where someone is the patient, doctor and interpreter, Hudson said. We also look at the different Hispanic cultures and study how different Spanish-speaking countries use different words. Even native speakers learn how other Hispanic cultures say certain things, use different words for the same meaning and speak with different accents. It s also important as an interpreter to be aware of these differences because you may be translating for Hispanic speakers from Mexico, Guatemala or El Salvador. The Community Spanish Interpreter program requires a fluency test, and instructors encourage students to not be afraid to take the test. We look at the overall performance and mastery of the grammar upon completion of the test. It s not that tough if you have been taking Spanish and already have been around the language, Jimenez said. The certificate requires six classes Culture & Civilization, Review of Grammar, Introduction to Translation, Introduction to Spanish Interpreter, Analytic Skills for Interpreting and Community Interpreting. Spanish 111 and Spanish 112 classes should be taken before the certificate for non-native speakers who can also successful in the program. For more information on the Community Spanish Interpreter certificate, contact Chairperson Danajean Mabry at (336) or [email protected]. You may also visit Jennifer Jimenez has worked and volunteered teaching English as a Second Language and is a volunteer interpreter for the Surry Medical Ministries. She earned an associate s degree in Spanish and Liberal Arts from Isothermal Community College. She received a bachelor s degree in Spanish from Gardner-Webb University and a master s degree from Winthrop University in Spanish. Jimenez taught high school Spanish for five years before coming to SCC in Previously, she was employed as a bilingual pharmacy technician. Jimenez has studied abroad in Alajuela, Costa Rica and San Jose, Costa Rica. She used to visit Mexico as a child at Christmas, whereby travel was the gift from her parents versus traditional presents. 3
6 In The Spotlight Paralegal Degree Offers Many Career Options 4 The Paralegal Technology program at Surry Community College can take people into a variety of career paths. Jonathan Semones of Mount Airy and Beverly Johnson of Dobson both graduated with degrees in Paralegal Technology from Surry Community College and now have successful careers outside of an attorney s office. Jonathan Semones is a mapper in the Tax Mapping Department in the Surry County Courthouse. He spent about three decades in the hosiery industry working until the company closed its doors. He qualified for retraining through the Trade Act of 1974 s Trade Adjustment Program, which provides aid to workers who lose their jobs or whose hours of work Jonathan Semones graduated from Surry Community College with a degree in Paralegal Technology. He is a mapper in the Tax Mapping Department in the Surry County Courthouse. and wages are reduced as a result of increased imports. The program paid for tuition, books, supplies and mileage while students also received unemployment checks. Semones decided to go back to school and take advantage of this great opportunity. I had been a machine mechanic for 27 years. I wanted to do something totally different. I was really burned out, he said. Going back to school at 48 years old was not originally in Semones life plans. He graduated from Mount Airy High School in I resented the idea of going back to school, but I knew I had to go and excel if I wanted to retrain to go into a different career, he said. After making high scores on the placement test, Semones found out that he would not have to take any remedial courses, which gave him self-confidence. That was a boost. I had been dreading it so much, and then I did well on the placement test. I thought maybe I can do it, he said. I had been out of high school for 30 years. I did feel uncomfortable at first being with students who were fresh out of high school. I knew I couldn t go home to mama if I didn t make it. What surprised me was that my life experience and work experience had prepared me for college. I was more responsible, and I had definite goals. I was focused. The term real property in the Paralegal Technology curriculum piqued his interest. I looked at Paralegal Technology and saw real property was included in the course lineup. That was the terminology that made me look twice, he said. I had always found property interesting the buying and selling of property and dealing with deed research and boundary issues. My wife had inherited a piece of property, and I did a lot of research at the register of deeds office trying to find answers about the boundaries. I had to trace information back to It was almost like an obsession for me to find the answers. Semones was able to maintain a 3.8 GPA while in the program and only stumbled a little bit with keyboarding and text entry. I forced myself to learn the keyboard without looking, he said. It was hard. The teacher covered the letters on the keys. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. I really struggled, but I passed with a C. Now, Semones is happily working as a mapper in the Mapping Department at the courthouse, which is also where he did a workbased learning internship as a student when he did research on properties with clouded ownerships. I had a great experience at Surry Community College. It was convenient, and the instructors were great. The library had good resources for papers and databases online. I ended up liking the challenge of college even though I didn t necessarily invite the challenge into my life. Once I got into it, I enjoyed it. Semones graduated from Surry in December 2009 and was hired at his current position in May Semones spends his days examining deeds and making sure they are recorded properly. He also answers questions from citizens and assists appraisers and attorneys with information. I have landed right where I should have. I love it. I am very satisfied. It s a love affair this job was made for me, and I was made for it, he said. It s challenging, and I am providing a service for something that is needed. I make crucial decisions that pertain to how property in Surry County is mapped. Ensuring that the property is recorded correctly prevents a lot of problems for landowners down the road. Beverly Johnson started taking classes in Nursing at Surry Community College and then decided it wasn t the correct career path for her. She wanted to be an attorney, so she took classes in Criminal Justice. She met her husband and decided to get married, so her plans for law school changed. Johnson always liked the legal field, so she started taking Paralegal Technology classes at Surry and earned a twoyear degree in the discipline and graduated from college in While she was in college, she did a work-based Beverly Johnson graduated from learning internship at the local Surry Community College with a degree in Paralegal Technology probation office, which was an and owns Chappell Insurance with eye-opening experience for partner Keith Wilmoth in Dobson. her. After graduation, she worked as a paralegal doing lots of title searches, wills and administrative work. She wanted to do more specialized paralegal work, but did not want to commute to Winston-Salem. She started selling insurance for Farm Bureau where she worked for 10 years as a licensed agent. The Paralegal Technology degree got me in the door at Farm Bureau, Johnson said. I used the experience from my classes to read and interpret insurance policies, which are written by lawyers. 7 In The Spotlight Paralegal Degree Leads to Job With Two Years of Study Wilborn Rives is the lead instructor for the Paralegal Technology program at Surry Community College. He is a Mount Airy native who graduated from N.C. State University in 1972 with a bachelor s degree in Politics. He worked in the private industry for 10 years before going to law school. He graduated from Wake Forest Law School in 1985 and practiced law in Surry County for 12 years. Rives has been teaching full-time at SCC since the paralegal program s inception in The Paralegal Technology program offers Surry Community College students a way to get an associate s degree that will lead to a job in many different areas including law, insurance, banking, local government and real estate. After obtaining a two-year degree in Paralegal Technology, students can sit for the North Carolina Paralegal Exam and become credentialed for the rest of their life if they maintain the continuing education requirements. Former attorney Wilborn Rives is the lead instructor for the Paralegal program. Surry Community College has the unique benefit of being in the county seat and having the courthouse accessible to our students. We really use the courthouse as a lab, Rives said. We have always had great support from our local judges, attorneys, clerk of court, register of deeds and tax office when we visit the courthouse. These people not only take time out to help our students when we visit during class, but also provide many of our work-based learning opportunities. Many students ask Rives if they can get a job by majoring in Paralegal Technology. This curriculum certainly prepares students for jobs that can lead to really good career paths. It doesn t have to be in the law field. There are many opportunities for people with paralegal skills, he said. I think some high school students overlook the advantage of a two-year degree. It s a huge financial benefit to be able to go to a community college for two years, earn a degree and get a job and be practically student-loan free when you are 20 years old. The degree complements Business Administration and Criminal Justice if students want to complete two associate degrees while at Surry. Paralegal graduates have also completed four-year degrees in Criminal Justice and Human Services. Students excel in this field if they are detail-oriented and enjoy communicating with people and like to be problem solvers. The program requires good reading and writing skills. The curriculum covers legal research and writing, civil litigation, real property law, criminal law and procedure, commercial law, family law and bankruptcy collections. This is not mundane, routine material. It is interesting, he said. While at Surry, students can join the Paralegal Club that participates in Student Government Activities on campus along with taking an annual field trip that is funded by club-sponsored fundraisers. Rives recommends high school students who are interested in the Paralegal degree to take math, English, social sciences, and fine art requirements through the tuition-free Career and College Promise dual-enrollment program as a way to fast-track into the Paralegal program once they graduate from high school. For more information about the Paralegal Technology program, contact Wilborn Rives at (336) or [email protected]. Continued from page 4 So I was used to the language and style of legal writing. Insurance and law go hand-in-hand. In 2003, she had the opportunity to buy in at Chappell Insurance as a partner, and she seized the opportunity. Then in 2006, she and another partner Keith Wilmoth bought the other partners out. People do not realize the areas that Paralegal can lead into besides working for an attorney, such as dealing with legal documents in the county offices or working in insurance and in business, she said. There are so many different things you can go into. Tort law improved her knowledge of insurance contracts and claims, whereas her paralegal studies helped with life insurance, wills, trusts and estate documents. My classes have helped me in the business world. My education at Surry Community College helped me get to where I am today, and not getting a four-year degree has not hurt me, she said. My education has prepared me to be a business owner in dealing with human resources responsibilities as well. I loved all my classes at Surry Community College. I liked going to school and taking classes that I enjoyed. It was never boring. All the instructors were attorneys, and they were very knowledgeable and able to share real-life experiences in the classroom. I was very interested because each class dealt with real life issues. I recommend Surry Community College. It s local and personal and not too big, she said. Chappell Insurance sells policies for 15 different companies. The staff matches the best policy with the client s needs. I like doing different things every day. It s not cookie cutter. It s interesting and challenging. The favorite part of my job is working with the people and the public. I like assisting people with questions and solving their problems. 8 In The Spotlight Electrician Shortage: Opportunity for Young People Surry Community College student Soloman Allen is wiring an electrical circuit into the main panel. Surry offers a degree, diploma and certificate in Electrical Systems with an electrical track and photovoltaic (PV or solar) track. The need for electricians is expected to grow by 20 percent between 2012 and 2022, according to estimates by the United States Department of Labor, yet the number of young people obtaining electrical licenses is in drastic decline. This is a situation where our country is really going to be in an electrician crisis since the need for skilled and licensed electricians is there, but the number of people coming into the field is less, said Tim Norman, who is the Director of the NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors. Norman, who is a graduate of Surry Community College and a Surry County native, thinks the previous slow growth in the construction industry caused the decline, but now the economy is improving. In 2003, 16,357 electricians were licensed in North Carolina whereas in 2014, only 13,211 people earned licensure, which is a 19 percent decrease, according to research provided by Norman. Another notable figure shows that the average age of the licensee is 53.5 years in 2014, whereas in 2003 the average age was 47. The most staggering fact is that less of the younger folks are coming into the trade. Of the licensed electricians in the state, only 130 are between the ages of 18 to 30 as of 2014 research, Norman said. Nobody is coming in. We feel like maybe some kids are being pushed into four-year programs that look more attractive and do not require manual labor, but then they are having trouble finding jobs once they graduate. Newly licensed electricians are not going to have that problem. Electricians also make a good living with the 2012 median pay reported at $49,840 per year or $23.96 per hour, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. There s money to be made in this industry. It s been very good to me. It s my age group s responsibility to pass the skills down to the younger generation. This is a great opportunity for young people especially when the economy comes back. They need to step in and fill some big shoes then have successful and rewarding careers in the electrical field. Norman received a degree from Surry Community College in Electrical Maintenance in He has an extensive background in the electrical industry having served as a state electrical inspector and a construction engineer/project monitor when he worked for the State Fire Marshals Office and then the Department of Administration and State Construction office. He began working in his current position in April of His agency licenses electrical contractors in the state and keeps up with the continuing education hours required to maintain electrical licenses. Norman hopes that by reaching out to community colleges and high schools, he can get the word out about the demand for electricians. Surry Community College has an Electrical Systems program that offers an electrical track and a photovoltaic (PV or solar) track. Students receive apprenticeship hours by taking classes at Surry Community College. A degree, diploma and certificate are offered in each area. The certificates are available for high school students through Career and College Promise, which is a dual enrollment program where students can earn high school and college credits tuition-free. Students can obtain 50 percent of their apprenticeship hours while at college earning a degree, said Joey Boles, who is the Lead Instructor of Electrical Systems Technology. Students also have the option to get a dual degree in electrical and photovoltaic, which makes them more marketable. North Carolina offers 10 different classifications of electrical contracting licenses. I would recommend going for the unlimited license classification. Then, you can do any electrical job you want, regardless of the contract price, Boles said. For more information about the North Carolina Sate Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors, go to at To learn more about the Electrical Systems Technology program, contact Joey Boles at (336) or [email protected] or Chairperson Jason Randall at (336) or randallj@surry. edu. You can also visit to learn more. Student Clay Morris is working on grounding for circuits. Electricians are in high demand and make an average of $49,840 per year. 6
9 In The Spotlight SCC Graduate Enjoys Intrinsic Rewards of Teaching Anna Jessup of Pinnacle is a graduate of Surry Community College and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She enjoys teaching prekindergarten at Pine Hall Elementary and is licensed to teach birth through sixth grade. She is pictured leading children through story time. Making a difference in the lives of children is why Anna Jessup wanted to become a teacher. Teaching is the profession that creates all others. I know that I make a difference in these kids lives each and every day whether I give them hugs that they don t get at home, or I inspire them to become future scientists, teachers, or even astronauts. This is such a rewarding profession. Jessup earned a degree from Surry Community College s Early Childhood Education program and then transferred to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to get a bachelor s degree. She now teaches pre- Kindergarten at Pine Hall Elementary School in Stokes County. As a teenager, she was inspired to go into teaching when taking Early Childhood classes at West Stokes High School. I knew right then that that s what I wanted to do. I had always loved children. I took parenting and child development. I liked the classes and learning about kids. Then I took Early Childhood I and II. We went to King Elementary to a pre-k class. My heart just knew that this is where I was supposed to be. It didn t feel like a job. Jessup started attending Surry Community College during the fall of 2010, and she graduated in May of Thanks to the articulation agreement between Surry and UNCW, I was able to finish in four years. The transfer process was very easy, she said. Surry helped prepared me for UNCW. I knew I needed to work hard if I wanted to go to a good university. I felt very prepared and confident when leaving Surry to attend UNCW. Jessup received a bachelor s of arts in the Education of Young Children from UNCW in May She is licensed to teach birth through sixth grade. As a pre-k teacher at Pine Hall Elementary, Jessup is enjoying her daily journey. The children are all so sweet. Every day is an adventure. That s what I love the most about it. I don t know what is going to happen or what the kids are going to say, she said. I have a lesson plan, but I veer off of it depending on their interests. If they get fascinated about a bug on playground, I ll change the lesson plan to include insects. Her recent class had nine children, and she explained that children like to learn in different ways. The biggest challenge is to make sure the instruction is differentiated for children who are at different levels, she said. We also learn manners and good behavior and doing things because it s the right thing to do. Jessup is proud of her students who have all made great progress this year. She noted one student who had cried a lot at the beginning of the school year and is now happy. It s just amazing to watch them grow and mature and watch them learn new things every single day, Jessup said. Those are the rewards of the job it s not just a paycheck. My job is very rewarding. I just love what I do so much. She recommends Surry Community College s Early Childhood program. I love Surry Community College. I was scared to death first starting out. Then, I just felt at home there. The faculty was always friendly and willing to help. They even helped me with my transition to UNCW. I liked the small campus at Surry. SCC has a special place in my heart. Also, going to Surry Community College before UNCW was a good plan for Jessup as it is for other students. Surry helped prepared me for UNCW. I knew I needed to work hard if I wanted to go to a good university, she said. I felt very prepared and confident when leaving Surry to attend UNCW. I ~ Anna Jessup knew that I would be successful because I was prepared academically for the workload. The Early Childhood program at Surry Community College is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The program is offered online or seated. A two-year degree is available along with a certificate in Infant and Toddler Care. Students can complete credentials in NC Early Childhood and NC Early Childhood Administration while at Surry. The Early Childhood Degree program prepares students for careers in childcare centers, developmental day programs and public schools. Coursework includes child development; the physical and nutritional needs of children; care and guidance of children; and communication skills.
