1 MediaContact: The2014RacialandGenderReportCard: CollegeSport byrichardlapchick withjohnfox,angelicaguiao,andmaclinsimpson PublishedMarch3,2015 EXECUTIVESUMMARY Orlando,FL March4,2015 The2014CollegeSportRacialandGenderReportCard(CSRGRC)was issuedtodaybytheinstitutefordiversityandethicsinsport(tides)attheuniversityofcentralflorida (UCF).ThereportshowedthattherecordoftheNationalCollegiateAthleticAssociationanditsmember institutionsworsenedforgenderhiringpractices,racialhiringpracticesandthecombinedgrade.itwas theworstracialandgenderreportcardissuedamongallprofessionalleaguesandthecollegesinthe pastyear. CollegeSportreceivedaC+forracialhiringpracticesbyearning78.5points,downfrom82.3pointsin the2013csrgrc.collegesportreceivedacpforgenderhiringpracticesbyearning69.4points,down from75.9pointsinthe2013csrgrc.thecombinedgradeforthe2014csrgrcwasacwith74.0 points,alsodownfromanoverallc+with79.1pointsin2013.itwastheworstcombinedgradeever issuedinthecollegergrc. RichardLapchick,theDirectorofTIDESandtheprimaryauthoroftheCSRGRC,said, Itwasextremely discouragingthatthisyear scsrgrc showedfurther deep overalldeclines. Thedropintherace and gendergradesemphasizedanareaofcontinuingandalarmingconcern.collegesportstillhadthelowest grade for racial hiring practices and is now tied with the National Football League for gender hiring practicesamongallofthecollegeandprofessionalsportscoveredbytherespectiveracialandgender ReportCards. Lapchicknoted, Itwasespeciallybadnewsthattheopportunityforpeopleofcoloramongmen sand women sbasketballheadcoachesdeclinedsignificantly.forthe2014season,22percentofthemen s DivisionIbasketballcoacheswereAfrican7American(downfrom23percent)and23.8percentwere coachesofcolor(downfrom24.8percent).theall7timehighwasin ,when25.2percentofall theheadcoacheswereafricanamericanand26.2werepeopleofcolor. ForDivisionIwomen sbasketballinthe season,african7americanwomenheadcoachesheld 10.6percentofthepositionsandAfrican7Americanmenheld3.7percentofthepositionsfora combinedpercentageof14.3percent,whichwasasignificantdecreasefromthe20.6percentreported in ThenumberofheadfootballcoachesofcolorattheFBSleveldecreasedfrom15inthe2013reportto 14atthestartofthe2014season.Nearly89percentwerewhite. The2014reportfeaturedseveralothersignificantareasofconcern. Whitescontinuedtodominatethe headcoachingranksonmen sandwomen steamsinallthreedivisions,holdingbetween85.2percent and91.3percentofallheadcoachingpositions. The2013reportwasthefirsttoincludeagendergradeforallDivisionIheadcoachesformen steams anddivisioniheadmen sbasketballcoachescategory,inresponsetofeedbackonourreportsfrom scholarandactivistmollyarenberg. Whileithasbeencommonpracticeformentocoachwomen steams,itisrareforawomantocoacha men steam.thiswasaccountedforinthegradesforcoachingforthesecondtimeinthecsrgrc. Womenheldonly38.2percentoftheheadcoachingjobsofwomen steamsindivisioni,34.8percentin DivisionIIand43.9percentinDivisionIII.Womenheld47percent,48.5percent,and51.2percentof assistantcoachingpositionsofwomen steamsindivisionsi,ii,andiii,respectively. Whitesheldtheoverwhelmingpercentofathleticsdirectorpositionsduringthe yearat87.7 percent,91.5percent,and94.5percentindivisionsi,ii,andiii,respectively.womenmadeuponly9.6 percentofdivisioniathleticsdirectors. AllFBSconferencecommissionerswerewhitemenin2014.Therecordforcoaches,athleticsdirectors andconferencecommissionerswascompletelyunacceptable. Athletic!Personnel!Report.Thesereportswereusedtoexaminetheracialandgenderdemographicsof NCAAheadandassistantcoaches,athleticsdirectors,associateandassistantathleticsdirectors,senior womanadministrators,academicadvisors,compliancecoordinatorsandmanagersforbusiness development,fundraising,facilities,marketing,ticketsales,mediarelationsandanarrayofassistants andsupportstaff. The2014ReportCardfeaturedupdatedracialandgenderpersonneldataattheNCAAheadquartersas wellasforuniversitypresidents,athleticsdirectors,headfootballcoaches,footballcoordinatorsand facultyathleticsrepresentativesatthe126institutionsinthedivisionifootballbowlsubdivision(fbs). Inaddition,thisyear sreportcardupdatedthesectionspertainingtoconferencecommissionersand

TIDESstrivestoemphasizethevalueofdiversitywithinathleticdepartmentswhentheychoosetheir officeleadershipteamsintheirofficeenvironments.initiativessuchasdiversitymanagementtraining canhelpchangeattitudesandincreasetheapplicantpoolforopenpositions.whileitisthechoiceof theinstitutionregardingwhichapplicantisthebestfitfortheirdepartment,tidesintendstoillustrate howimportantitistohaveadiverseorganizationwithdifferentracesand/orgenders.thiselementof diversitycanprovideadifferentperspectiveandultimatelyacompetitiveadvantageintheexecutive officesandontheathleticfieldsofplay. REPORTHIGHLIGHTSFOR2014 UniversityLeadershipPositionsatFootballBowlSubdivisionInstitutions Thenumberoffemalepresidentsatthe126FBSinstitutionsremainedthesameat19from2013to percent(111)ofFBSuniversitypresidentswerewhite.ThereweresevenAfrican7American presidents,sixasianpresidents,andtwolatinopresidents.therewerenonative7american universitypresidents.

Therewere112(88.9percent)whiteheadfootballcoachestobeginthe2014season.Thenumber ofheadfootballcoachesofcoloratthefbsleveldecreasedfrom15inthe2013reportto14atthe startofthe2014season. Latinoheadfootballcoachesremainedthesameatone(0.8percent)from2013.Therewerestill two(1.6percent)asian/pacificislanderheadcoaches.thepercentofafrican7americanhead coachesdroppedto8.7percentin2014,from9.6percentin2013. NCAAHeadquarters! AttheNCAAheadquarters,thepercentofpeopleofcolorincreasedatthemanaginganddirector level,whileitdecreasedattheprofessionaladministratorlevels. Thepercentofwomenincreasedattheseniorlevelsandmanaginganddirectorlevels,whileit decreasedattheprofessionaladministratorlevels. AttheNCAAheadquarters,thenumberofpeopleofcolorandwomeninthepositionsofchief operatingofficer,executivevicepresident,seniorvicepresidentandvicepresidentremainedthe sameatfoureachin2014.african7americansweretheonlypeopleofcolortoholdthesepositions in2014. Thepercentofexecutivesatthemanagingdirector/directorpositionswhowerepeopleofcolor increasedfrom17.1percentin2013to18.1percentin2014.womenaccountedfor44.6percentof thesepositionsin2014comparedto41.5percentin2013.african7americansrepresented15.7 percentin2014,whichwasadecreaseof0.2percentagepointfromthe2013totals.the2014data showedthattherewasonelatinointhesepositions,whichwasanincreaseof1.2percentage points,whilethepercentageofasiansremainedthesamefrom2013at1.2percent. AttheProfessionalAdministratorlevel,thepercentofpeopleofcolordecreasedslightlyfrom20.4 percentin2013to20.2percentin2014.thepercentofafrican7americansremainedthesameat 15.8percentin2014.In2014,thepercentofLatinoandAsianrepresentationdecreasedfrom1.8 percentand2.8percentin2013to1.4percentand2.7percent,respectively.thepercentofwhite administratorsincreasedfrom79.6percentin2013to79.8percentin2014.thepercentageof womeninadministrativepositionsdecreasedfrom56.5percentin2013to53.1percentin2014. 5 5 P age StudentPAthletes Duringthe2014season,43.4percentofallNCAADivisionI,II,andIIIstudent7athletescombined werefemaleand56.6percentweremale. Ofallstudent7athletesinDivisionIfootballattheFBSlevelduringthe2014year,52.9percentwere African7Americans,42percentwerewhite,twopercentwereLatinos,Asian/PacificIslanders represented2.1percent,andonepercentofmaledivisionifootballstudent7athleteswereclassified as other. Ofthetotalstudent7athletesinallofDivisionIfootball,46.9percentwereAfrican7Americans,41.3 percentwerewhite,latinoswere2.4percent,asian/pacificislandersrepresented1.8percentand Native7Americansrepresented0.4percent.Student7athletesidentifiedastwoormoreracesor other totaled6.8percent. ThepercentageofallDivisionIfootballstudent7athletesidentifyingaspersonsofcolorhas increasedsignificantlysince from50to58.7percent.in2014,thepercentageofwhite footballstudent7athletesatthefbslevelwas42percentwhileitwas41.3percentforthedivisioni levelaltogether.thedivisionitotalnumberhasdecreasedsteadilyfrom whenitwas50 percent.theincreaseinthenumberofstudent7athletesidentifyingastwoormoreracesor other mightexplainpartofthedecreaseinwhiteathletesfromrecentyears. Only6.1percentofDivisionIheadbaseballcoacheswerepeopleofcolor:3.2percentwereLatino, 1.4percentwereAfrican7American,1.1percentwereAsian/PacificIslander,and0.4percentwere classifiedasbeing twoormore races.

OVERALLGRADES CollegeSport s2014combinedgradeforracialandgenderhiringpracticeswasacwith74.0 points,downfromanoverallc+with79.1pointsin2013.
