3 Introduction The purpose of The Distinguished List is to record and recognise the achievement of those Latymerians who have made a distinguished contribution to their chosen field of endeavour, either professionally or through community service. Criteria Examples of the current criteria used in selecting Latymerians for inclusion in the Distinguished List are set out below. These are, however, only guidelines; the indicator is not so much the position or title held as the distinctive and outstanding nature of the individual s achievements. ACADEMIC Professors, Head Teachers, eminent academics MEDIA Editors & national media correspondents THE ARTS Well-known Musicians, Actors, Authors, Artists, Sculptors and personalities in broadcasting, film and the theatre. Established personalities in the fashion/creative industry HONOURS Fellows of the Royal Society; Presidents of Distinguished Societies; Peers; Knights. Those honoured with national gallantry or civil awards. COMMERCE Board Directors of substantial companies (FTSE 350 or equivalent private companies may be a guide); or Directors of equivalent overseas companies. THE CITY Board directors of major financial institutions. Eminent figures within Lloyd s, the Stock Exchange and other City institutions. PROFESSIONAL OR TRADE BODIES (EXCLUDING HEALTH SEE BELOW) Members of the governing body of a recognised professional institution or trade body (e.g. Law Society, ICAEW, CBI, British Retail Consortium) ENTREPRENEURS Those who have clearly been successful by making appreciable financial returns from their entrepreneurial efforts. MILITARY AND UNIFORMED SERVICES Those reaching Brigadier / Commodore / Air Commodore rank or higher. Chief Constables & Assistants. Equivalent status in the Fire and Rescue Service. POLITICS, GOVERNMENT AND THE CIVIL SERVICE MPs, MEPs, Senior Civil Servants (e.g. Under Secretaries). Lord Lieutenants. Holders of eminent positions in Local Government DIPLOMATIC Ambassadors and High Commissioners. ii

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Those responsible for innovative or outstanding achievements in engineering, manufacturing, information technology, research and other scientific fields CHURCHES AND OTHER FAITH COMMUNITIES, CHARITIES, NGOS Senior positions of influence and responsibility HEALTH SECTOR Senior health professionals ONES TO WATCH Up and coming achievers and personalities amongst those who have left within the last 15 years. Placed on a confidential list and reviewed every five years for possible transfer to the Distinguished List Procedure Responsibility for the selection of those whose names appear in the Distinguished List rests with the Latymerian Council. Any Latymerian may nominate another Latymerian for inclusion in the next edition. International nominations are welcome.
