Computational methods to explore syntactic-semantic interface: the case of the Italian verbs Tutor: Alessandro Lenci Summary: My Ph.D. study is concerned with experiments on the automatic induction of Italian semantic verb Classes using k-means, a standard clustering technique, to the task of verifying if it is plausible to find a tight connection between the meaning components of a verb and its syntactic behavior. The theoretical foundation has been established in extensive works on semantic verb classes such as (Levin (1993)) for English and (Schulte im Walde (2002), (2003), (2004), (2006)) for German: each verb class contains verbs which are similar in their meaning and in their syntactic properties. Founding my work on this hypothesis, I have conducted a corpus-based study on La Repubblica corpus, one of the leading corpora freely available for the Italian language, to subsequently obtain an automatic classification of a sample of Italian verbs. Using probability distributions over verb subcategorisation frames and nominal fillers, I obtained an intuitively plausible clustering of 200 verbs into 40, 24 and 10 classes.

2 The automatic clustering was evaluated against independently motivated, handconstructed semantic verb classes. A series of post-hoc cluster analysis explored the influence of specific frames and frame groups on the coherence of the verb classes, and supported the validity of the syntactic-semantic hypothesis. 6 Fundings and Competitions: In September 2010 I received fundings from Region Umbria, to support a project conceived by myself called Strumenti linguistici a sostegno degli studenti non italofoni: la creazione di un corpus del lessico accademico dell italiano parlato (Linguistic tools in support of non-native students of Italian L2: the development of an academic spoken Italian Corpus), developed at the University for foreigners of Perugia. In September 2011 I won the competition proposed by the SIG (Società Italiana di Glottologia), called Un nuovo look per la SIG (A new look for the SIG). I presented a new logo and a new site for the Society, that will be soon at your disposal online. Collaborations and actual Positions: After my degree I collaborated with Prof. Lorenzi to the project DLM, that aims to construct a collection of metalinguistic data. The project involved a lot of Italian Universities such as that of Perugia, Macerata, Bologna, Catania, Cosenza, Palermo, Udine, and Napoli. Starting from 2010 till October 2012, I worked as researcher at the University for Foreigners of Perugia, where I was involved in two different projects: the first one called Linguistic tools in support of non-native students of Italian L2: the development of an academic spoken Italian Corpus, and the other called APRIL. They were particularly related in the development of linguistic tools for non native speakers of Italian language and of e-learning tools and strategies. The aim of this research was to identify and classify, towards computational methods based on the usage of corpora and statistical tools, the academic spoken Italian lexicon. The academic lexicon is tightly linked to the learning and didactic activities with which students daily come in contact with during lessons, exams, conferences and so on. A right and immediate decoding of some lexical units such as contesto (context), teoria (theory), approccio (approach), or some articulate expressions such as introdurre un concetto (to introduce a concept) or trattare un argomento (to deal with a topic), is a fundamental step to proceed successfully throughout the academic career and then to get into the working world. This is concerned first of all with L2 students, that have to discover a different social and linguistic context. The corpus developed in this research is an opportunity given to foreign students to exercise on lexicon and to increase their lexical performance. But this is also a useful tool for teachers, who can prepare specific course material focused on this particular linguistic register. I built the corpus balancing data in two ways:

7 - horizontally, dividing the thematic areas of affiliation of the collected texts (humanistic/economicjuridical/scientific); - vertically, sharing the different communicative situations considered relevant for the project (lessons/oral exams/conferences). The so collected corpus has been then annotated and lemmatized using TreeTagger, a computational tool useful in textual annotation, developed by the Institute of Computational Linguistics of Stuttgart. After having developed the Academic Spoken Italian Corpus, our aim has been to realize a frequency list of the Italian non-technical words, widely used in the academic oral communication. The list was directly connected with the need of expand the academic lexicon of the non native students who learn Italian as second language at the University. On the other hand, we developed a lexical database, called LELE, that has been integrated in a LMS platform and used to realize an online environment for linguistic teaching. Actually I m a researcher at the University for foreigners of Siena, where I m involved in the project CLODIS, for the development of a multimodal oral corpus, designed for teacher training, the analysis of the interaction in an Italian L2 classroom, the identification of some relevant semiotic markers (such as gestures, setting, role of the participants in the communicative and didactic exchange). Didactic Experiences: Since November 2011, I m a contract Professor at the University of Perugia, where I teach semiotics, general linguistics, psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics. Foreign Languages: Advances knowledge of German, English and French, both oral and written. Computer Knowledge: During my Ph.D. I ve improved my computer knowledge, especially in the following domains: - statistic treatment of textual data; - clustering; - distributional semantics; - development of sites; - multimodal treatment of data; - html programming.
