I. Degree Requirements A. Unit Requirement A. University Requirements A. General Education Requirements A. Major Requirements 3
What is a unit? Units Measure of credit awarded for successful completion of a course 1 unit is approximately 3 hours of work per week both in and out of class How many do we need? 180 or 184 minimum units to graduate (determined by General Education) 1/3 General Education, 1/3 Major, 1/3 Elective 60 units must be Upper Division General Education Major Electives Need minimum of 12 units per quarter Need to average 15 units per quarter for graduation in four years Course Numbering Class Standing 1-99 Lower Division 0-45 Freshman Upper Division Sophomore 200+ Graduate Junior Senior 4
Which Classes to Take? Here are some things to consider when making your decision: The College of Letters & Science recommends units for an entering student. Consider the transition both academically and personally. First quarter is a time to explore. You have plenty of time to fulfill your graduation requirements. Try for a range of courses, some requirements and some electives. Many students do not take courses for their major until their 2 nd or 3 rd quarter (excluding science/engineering majors). 5
Minimum Cumulative Progress (MCP) Letters & Science and Engineering students are required to successfully accumulate a minimum number of units each quarter. Progress is measured by units earned in courses taken after matriculation at UCSB. See the MCP tab on GOLD to view your MCP progress

Major Requirements To check which courses are required for a particular major, consult the major sheets: or the General Catalog: Science and fine arts majors are encouraged to begin taking introductory major courses in their first quarter. All other majors (humanities and social sciences) may begin major coursework sometime during their first year. Meet with the Undergraduate Advisor in your major department when you arrive on campus. 20
I. Degree Requirements A. Unit Requirement B. University Requirements C. General Education Requirements D. Major Requirements 21
II. Course Selection A. Resources for Course Selection Gaucho Online Data (GOLD) General Catalog Letters and Science Academic Requirements B. Guidelines for Choosing Courses 22
Course Selection Resources Gaucho Online Data (GOLD) Read descriptions of courses offered in the current and subsequent quarters Determine the requirements each course fulfills as well as prerequisites for each course Search for classes Build a schedule General Catalog Information about each academic department Requirements for each major View all courses ever offered at UCSB Letters and Science Academic Requirements (LASAR) Review General University Requirements View lists of courses that fulfill General Education Requirements 23
Guidelines for Choosing Courses Be sure not to select a course for which you ve already earned AP/IB credit or done transfer work. Check GOLD to see if you have met all prerequisites. Select lower division courses only (#1-99). Search for a variety of classes, and consider taking any course that sounds interesting to you. Create a schedule that allows you to fulfill General Education as well as elective units. If taking math or language, make sure your placements are appropriate for the courses you select.
III. Registration Information A. U-Mail Account B. Pass Times for Registration C. Tips for Registration D. Course Registration Information E. Fee Payment & Deadlines 25
U-Mail Account Official account with the university. All university correspondence is done through U-Mail. An active U-Mail account is required to log in to the GOLD system. To set up your U-Mail account visit: Click on U-Mail Identity Services Write down username & password as these will be your UCSB Net ID & password to log in to GOLD and several other university web sites. 26
Pass Times for Registration GOLD (Gaucho Online Data) UCSB Net ID & Password Three registration appointment times known as pass times Check GOLD under the registration information tab to find out pass times for each quarter Pass 1 -Register up to 13.5 units Pass 2 -Add up to19 units Pass 3 -Add up to max allowed by your college -Schedule adjust -Change grading option Priority for pass times is based on number of units earned Late registration fee of $50 will be assessed if you do not register by the end of pass 2 27
Registration Tips Register early during your pass time for best priority. A good schedule is one that is balanced (variety of subject matter, requirements, requirements and electives, or requirements, electives, and major courses). Courses with a discussion section require that you enroll through the section. GOLD must show space in both the lecture and the section. Early morning and evening courses and discussion sections usually have the greatest number of spaces available. Have desired courses prioritized and written down. Try for only 1-2 special subject writing requirements. Check for time conflicts. GOLD will highlight conflicts for you but you must make the change yourself. Before you log-off, check your final exam schedule on GOLD. Try for no more than 1-2 per day.
First Quarter Course Registration Prepare in advance by: Watching the GOLD demonstrations related to course selection Reviewing course descriptions on GOLD and selecting a number of lower-division courses that sound interesting to you Checking prerequisites for math and writing classes Schedule Adjustment You may adjust your schedule anytime during your assigned pass time Or, during Pass 3 Some courses require an approval code to add after the 5th day of instruction 29
Fee Payment & Deadlines Fee Payment Quarterly fees must be paid by September 15 th, December 15 th, and March 15 th after these dates a $50 late fee applies and your enrollment in classes may be cancelled Financial aid and BARC account status may be checked on: my.ucsb.edu. Final Deadlines to Make Changes: Add deadline: 15 th day of classes Drop deadline: 20 th day of classes Grading Option deadline: end of the 7 th week of the quarter a $3 fee may apply 30
IV. GOLD Demonstration Log on to GOLD and click on the Help link to view demonstrations (demo) on how to use GOLD The most helpful demonstrations for course registration will be: Find courses demo Add class demo Class schedule demo Registration Info demo The demonstrations can be viewed using Closed Captioning if preferred.
