3 BIBLICAL COUNSELING & DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRY OVERVIEW The Calvary Bible Church Biblical Counseling and Discipleship Ministry (BCDM) exists to equip Calvary Bible Church Members in biblical counseling and discipleship care in the life of those at Calvary Bible Church and in their communities. We do this primarily through training and assisting in the NANC certification process. Block One The first block of the Counseling Discipleship Training includes 15 hours of basic biblical counseling courses, and a simple 10-question open book/notes exam. Once all requirements are fulfilled, an application form can be completed and sent to the CBC Counseling Administrator. 1) Complete 15 hours of Block One Basic Training at Calvary Bible Church on Sunday evenings, Biblical Counseling and Discipleship Association (BCDA), or Institute of Biblical Counseling and Discipleship (IBCD). 2) Request and complete the Block One Exam and submit to the CBC counseling Administrator, Shelbi Cullen at scullen@calvarybiblechurch.org. 3) Request and fill-out the CBC Counseling Ministry Application. 4) Schedule an Interview with Edward Wilde, CBC Pastor over Counseling Block Two The second block of the Counseling Discipleship Training and NANC Certification process involves five steps and is designed to finish up basic counseling coursework, Block II exam, and participate in counseling observations. Once all of the requirements are fulfilled the candidate may begin to team counsel with a certified biblical counselor at Calvary Bible Church. 1) Complete 15 hours of Block Two Basic Training at Calvary Bible Church on Sunday evenings, Biblical Counseling and Discipleship Association (BCDA), or Institute of Biblical Counseling and Discipleship (IBCD). 2) Request and complete the Block Two Exam and submit to CBC Counseling Ministry Administrator, Shelbi Cullen at shelbic@calvarybiblechurch.org. 3) Complete 500 pages of required reading from the CBC Counseling Ministry approved list. 4) Complete 10 hours of counseling observations of either a NANC certified counselor at CBC or watch approved counseling DVDs. 5) Complete an 8-week long Practicum Discipleship Class with one of our seasoned counselors. Block Three The third block of the Counseling Discipleship Training and NANC Certification process involves four steps and is designed to help the counselor pass the NANC exam and to finish up the application process for NANC certification. Once all of the requirements have been fulfilled, the candidate will be eligible to serve as a lay counselor for Calvary Bible Church. 1) Complete the NANC Exam Workshop at Calvary Bible Church. 2) Complete the NANC Theological and Counselor s Exam. 3) Complete 500 pages of required reading from the CBC Counseling Ministry approved list. 4) Submit completed paperwork to the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors (NANC) at Block Four The fourth block of the Counseling Discipleship Training and NANC Certification Process involves three steps and is designed help the counselor to integrate what they have learned in blocks one through three and to complete the NANC certification process. 1) Complete 50 hours of supervised counseling at Calvary Bible Church under the direction of a NANC Fellow. 2) Send copies of all counseling case reports to Pastor Ed Wilde. 3) Attend continuing Education Courses for counseling at IBCD, BCDA, NANC or The Master s College. 3 P a g e

10 NANC THEOLOGY EXAM 4 Using essay style writing, please respond thoroughly to each of these statements. Write your answers as though you are explaining them to a counselee, defining all terms clearly and precisely. Use 1.5 spacing. Your answers should be 1 page to 1 ½ pages in length. Support all your answers with Scripture. This is an open book exam. Use a case history, in which you were the counselor, to show the necessity for moving from the performance level to the preconditioning level. 11. Define a complicating problem. Give a concrete example. 12. Define "halo data" and give some examples of halo data for depression. 13. Define and describe the importance of language in counseling. Give examples. 14. Explain the significance of Eph. 4:17-25, and similar passages for Biblical counseling. 15. Describe and diagram how depression develops and is to be alleviated. 16. Define anger biblically. Don t discuss what you would do in giving assignments; rather give actual assignments as you would write them down for the counselee. 18. Describe how you deal with sin in counseling. Use a case history, in which you were the counselor, to show how you dealt with sin. 19. Outline a comprehensive counseling program to help a couple develop good communication patterns. 20. 12 21. Define total restructuring. Describe how it works, using a case regarding homosexuality as the model. 22. Develop a biblical view of emotions. Use both the Old and New Testaments in your answer. How can emotions be changed biblically? 23. List several reasons for terminating a counseling case. Answer this for cases terminated because of spiritual change (growth) and spiritual hardening (failure to comply). 24. Is there any place in biblical counseling for casting out demons? In your answer, include your position on demonic activity in the post-apostolic era and the biblical methodology of dealing with it. 25. What does it mean to minister the Scriptures in counseling? Contrast a ministry of the word model and a professional medical model. 26. Write a short paragraph on each of the following: healing of the memories, visualization techniques, 12-step and other recovery programs, self-image. 15 COUNSELING CONSENT FORM Please read the following form CAREFULLY. You will be asked to sign this form to indicate that youhave read and understood this form. BIBLICAL COUNSELING: We are offering to provide you biblical counsel ; the process is referred to as biblical counseling. Biblical counsel is given to help you meet the challenges of life in such a way as to please and honor the Lord Jesus Christ. Our desire and prayer is that the Lord help you grow in spiritual maturity and prepare you for usefulness in His body. The counsel we provide is biblical; that is, according to scriptural principles since God s Word states that He has provided, through His promises, all that believers need for life and godliness (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:3-4). We see scripture as sufficient in these areas. Our counsel is religious in nature, conducted under the authority and leadership of Calvary Bible Church. in accordance with this conviction, our counselors are not trained as nor are they licensed as psychotherapists or mental health professionals. We do not make referrals to those who provide what is generally referred to as psychotherapy, such as licensed psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, or similar persons. This does not mean that we will not cooperate with professionals who provide services such as medical, financial or legal services. However, our cooperation will only be provided within the context of biblical counseling. Our counsel is not intended to replace the services of a medical doctor when organic problems are present or medication has been prescribed. The decision to obtain such assistance must be made by you with the help of appropriate professionals. We have no obligation to assist you in the work of obtaining assistance from medical professionals, nor do we claim to have any particular expertise in determining whether or when the assistance of medical professionals would be appropriate. FEES: Biblical counseling is part of the pastoral ministry of Calvary Bible Church ( CBC ). You will not be asked to pay any fees expressed or implied. You may, however, be requested to purchase a limited amount of materials, such as a book. CONFIDENTIALITY: We will appropriately keep confidential the information you entrust to us. However, that does not mean that your information will be kept confidential in all circumstances. Because you are seeking pastoral, biblical counseling, we want you to understand that there may be times when it is necessary to share such information with others. Examples include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. When a counselor is uncertain as to how to address a particular counseling issue, he may seek advice from a pastor or another counselor. 2. When a counselee threatens harm to another person, it may be necessary to intervene in order to prevent such harm. In the case of spousal or child abuse, or other crime, the law may require a counselor to reveal this information to appropriate authorities. 3. If, in the course of counseling, the counselee is confronted with a particular sin, yet refuses to repent of it, it may be necessary to get the assistance of other pastors or counselors to encourage repentance and reconciliation (Proverbs 15:22; 24:11; Matthew 18:15-20). We will disclose only such information as is necessary in accord with the Scripture, and only to those biblically required to be involved. If you are a member of another church, it will likely be necessary to contact the pastor or other leadership of your church. If you are a member of CBC, this information will be used in accordance with the process spelled out in Matthew 18:15-20 and our By-Laws. WAIVER OF RIGHT TO JURY TRIAL ARBITRATION: The Lord prohibits believers from bringing lawsuits against one another (1 Corinthians 6:1-8). Therefore, in order to hold fast this teaching,the leadership of CBC has found it necessary to require all counselees to agree that any dispute with acounselor or with CBC will first be attempted to be settled by mediation. If mediation fails, you agree that you will resolve any and all claims against CBC or against any counselor of CBC by binding arbitration conducted according to the Rules of Procedure of the Institute for Christian Conciliation (copy available on request). The arbiters may be the elders of CBC or, if the dispute involves an elder or elders, a member of Christian Conciliation Ministry.
