16 First, what is meant by health? More than the simple absence of disease It is the ability to realize aspiraaons, to have the personal and social resources, and physical capaciaes, to meet potenaal. This definiaon can be applied to an individual, or a group of people.

17 What is meant by public health? Organized community efforts to protect, promote, and restore the people s health. It is a combinaaon of the sciences, skills, and beliefs to maintain and improve the health of all people through collecave and social acaons. Public health can refer to: social insatuaons a discipline a pracace Roots of the discipline are in social jusace and equality

18 What is meant by health dispariaes and health equity? It is a difference in which disadvantaged social groups systemaacally experience worse health or greater health risks than more advantaged social groups. Social advantage refers to relaave posiaon in the social hierarchy determined by wealth, power, or presage.

21 Types of Public Health Degrees BA/BS: The undergraduate degree in community/public health prepares students for working in the health field Most students go on for graduate work MPH: Master in Public Health degree is the professional pracace degree Most common degree in government organizaaons Allows you to lead disease prevenaon programs, grants management, community educaaon programs & policy work PhD/DrPH: The academic degree offered by Schools of Public Health the doctoral degree gives you the ability to obtain grant funding and teach at the college level
