NORTH CENTRAL MICHIGAN COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP Through the NCMC partnership, students enrolled in the Young Americans Performance Certificate can opt to concurrently enroll in up to 12 credits each semester through NCMC. Students will not duplicate courses; all courses will be taught by Young Americans faculty in our California classrooms or in a hybrid format: online and classroom segments. Students are encouraged to take additional courses to earn an Associate of General Studies Degree (AGS) from NCMC. BENEFITS In the course of two years you can earn 48 credits of YA course work taken through NCMC. Additional course work may be taken directly through NCMC online. These credits will appear on a NCMC transcript and be eligible for transfer to other educational institutions. Access to federal financial aid (grants and student loans) as a full time NCMC student. Financial aid is available to qualified students enrolled in 6 or more North Central credit hours. By taking an additional 12 credits of General Education courses directly through NCMC or another accredited college, students may earn an Associate of General Studies Degree. These credits can be taken online at any time or in person after leaving the YA program. ASSOCIATE OF GENERAL STUDIES DEGREE (AGS) The AGS is the most flexible degree option through NCMC and is earned by many students who wish to transfer to a college or university to complete a Bachelor s Degree. To earn an AGS, a minimum of 60 college-level credits is required. In addition to the 48 credits* you ll earn while participating in the Young Americans Performance Certificate program of study, an additional 12 credits must be taken directly through NCMC or another accredited college or university at any time before, during, or after your time with The Young Americans. Due to NCMC s accreditation guidelines, at least four credits must be taken from another institution other than North Central. AP credits and dual enrollment credits can be counted in this category. Many courses are offered online throughout the fall, winter and summer NCMC sessions. The degree requirements are as follows: ENG 111: English Composition I - (offered at YAs*) ENG 112: English Composition II - (offered at YAs*) COM 111: Speech or COM 170: Interpersonal Communication - (offered at YAs*) 3 credit hours of Humanities - (offered at YAs*) 3 credit hours of Social Sciences - (offered at YAs*) 3-4 credit hours of Natural Sciences - (offered at YAs*) 3-4 credit hours of math - (offered at YAs*) Electives - (30 credits offered at YAs*) Potential elective courses include: Art History, Intro to Marketing, Basic Photography, Intro to American Government., Principles of Management, Children s Literature, etc. (Pre-requisites may be required.) * Course selections offered at YAs are subject to change.

Students with questions about courses to choose as electives from another college or university to fulfill AGS degree requirements should contact Paula Welmers at or is preferred due to time zone differences. REQUIREMENTS 1. The Young Americans partnership program with North Central is a selective requiring that you have minimum scores in order to be admitted to the program. We will use the highest of any of the requirements listed below to determine your placement. Both minimum scores for each test are used to satisfy the requirement: H.S. GPA ACT SAT COMPASS COMPASS COMPASS Cumulative GPA 3.0 ACT Reading SAT Reading COMPASS E-Write 6 COMPASS E-Write 7 or 8 COMPASS Writing ACT ENGLISH SAT Writing/ENGLISH Reading Reading COMPASS Reading U.S. Citizenship (dual citizenship is acceptable - TOEFL required [min. score Paper 550, Computer-based 213, Internet-based 79]) 3. Completion of NCMC enrollment steps and acceptance into NCMC. 4. Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Steps to follow. HOW IT WORKS After you have been admitted to North Central, the YAs will submit your enrollment to NCMC each semester on your behalf. If you are participating in this affiliation, the tuition is then split between the YAs and NCMC. Billing is made for YA classes and NCMC classes separately: you will pay the YAs directly and NCMC directly. NCMC tuition is based on residency and number of contact hours for which a student is enrolled. It is approximately $2,500 per semester for 12 credits; additional mandatory fees and costs for textbooks will apply. YA tuition varies depending upon which enrollment option you choose. If you are applying for financial aid, once your award or loan amount has been determined, NCMC will first deduct your NCMC charges from your award and then any remaining funds will be disbursed to you approximately 5 weeks after the NCMC semester begins. The excess funds can then be used for YA tuition, housing, school supplies and additional living expenses.

1. Begin Applying for Financial Aid a. Go to b. Click apply now for pin c. Print pin application confirmation page d. Go to e. Complete FAFSA application NCMC Code is: o Approximately one week after the FAFSA is submitted via the Internet or four weeks after a paper application is submitted, the student will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR recaps the information submitted on the FAFSA. Review the information for accuracy and submit any changes on-line at the FAFSA website. o If the student provided an address on the FAFSA, the Federal Processor will communicate with the student via . If no address was provided, correspondence will be by mail. Note: NCMC will communicate with you via your NCMC Mymail (Gmail) account. Financial Aid and Business Office notices will only be sent to this account. Note: If you have already completed a FAFSA application for another institution you need to log back into your FAFSA online application and add a school using the NCMC code of Your information will then be sent to the NCMC financial aid office. 2. North Central Michigan College will request additional documents if: i. The student is selected for verification. The student will be required to submit the required documentation and a verification worksheet. The SAR will contain a message if the student has been selected for this process. ii. Other information is needed to establish eligibility or to verify application information. iii. Respond immediately to all requests for information. Application processing is stopped until the student s file is complete. 3. Once the student s file is complete, it will be reviewed and eligibility will be determined by NCMC. Files are reviewed by NCMC in the order completed. All students are notified via their NCMC Mymail (Gmail) account of their eligibility. 4. Inform the NCMC Financial Aid office of changes to any family or financial circumstances, such as loss of employment, death or disability of a family wage earner, divorce or separation. A reevaluation of financial aid eligibility may occur. 5. Keep demographic information current with NCMC Student Services and the Federal Processor. 6. You may also wish to explore loan options through NCMC or private institutions such as your bank. Visit for more information. Just remember you only qualify for these programs based upon your enrollment at NCMC. Your status with The Young Americans College of the Performing Arts will not qualify you for these aid and loan programs.

7. Once you have your financial aid secured, complete the attached financial aid certification form and submit it to the YA office. This will be kept confidential and will only be used to help us ensure your student account through YA s is accurate. This will be important if you are obtaining additional funding for tuition through financial aid, as the lender will pay your aid award to NCMC which will then disburse funds to you directly. The YA office will need verification on file that you have financial aid secured that will be applicable to your tuition in order to be flexible on YA due dates if your funding is still in process. If we do not have verification on file of awarded aid you will be required to make all YA payments on the published due dates. 8. The process of enrolling in classes will be sent to you at a later date. DO NOT follow any of the class registration instructions on the NCMC web site unless you are taking online elective courses (please speak with Mike Krauss at The Young Americans prior to enrollment in any NCMC online courses). Once you arrive in California, the YA staff will submit your NCMC registration on your behalf. Frequently asked questions for The Young Americans: When and how will I register for my classes? The YAs will submit your registration to NCMC each semester on your behalf except for elective online courses. If I attended another school after high school should I have a copy of my transcript sent? Yes, contact the school previously attended and request an official transcript. Have the official transcript sent directly from the college or university to the NCMC Registrar at 1515 Howard Street, Petoskey, MI, Once received, your transcript will be evaluated and eligible credits will be transferred. Approximately how much will my North Central classes cost*? The per contact hour tuition rate is $ (out-of-state). Additional fees include a technology fee ($4.00 per contact hour), a registration fee ($3.00 per contact hour), an off campus operations fee ($2.50 per contact hour), and individual course fees. If you plan to take the first semester freshman curriculum set forth by The Young Americans and North Central, your estimated tuition and fees would look like this: Tuition 12 contact hours X $ = $2, Technology Fee 12 contact hours X $4.00 = $ Registration Fee 12 contact hours X $3.50 = $ Student Success Fee 12 contact hours x $1.00 = $ Activity Fee 12 contact hours x $1.50 = $ Building & Energy Fee 12 contact hours x $10.00 = $ Off Campus Operations Fee 12 contact hours X $2.50 = $ Matriculation Fee First semester only = $25.00 $2, *Tuition and Fees shown are from Academic Year and are subject to change

What is an Associate of General Studies degree and what are the requirements? The Associate of General Studies (AGS) degree is for students who wish to earn an associate s degree that may transfer to a college or university. To earn an AGS a student must complete 60 credits. The breakdown of credits is as follows: Communications 9 credits * English 111 * English 112 * Communications 111 or 170 Humanities 3 credits Social Sciences 3-4 credits Natural Sciences 3-4 credits Mathematics 3-4 credits Satisfied by one of the following: * Any Math course above 100 * Business Math 104 * ACT Math score of 21 or higher * COMPASS Math score of 146 or higher General Electives credit hours Electives should be carefully chosen. The necessary classes will be offered on-ground in California, online, or in a hybrid format. Can I complete the 60 credits necessary for the AGS in two years? Yes, but pacing is important, and the credits cannot all be taken from North Central. Due to accreditation guidelines, at least four credits must be taken from another institution other than North Central. AP credits and dual enrollment credits can be counted in this category. AP and /or CLEP test scores or transfer credits can be applied to satisfy the degree requirements. In addition to core curriculum set forth by North Central and The Young Americans College, elective credits will need to be completed. Elective courses can be added in the fall or winter term or taken on their own in the summer at a college close to home. It is advisable not to wait too long to begin taking the electives. How can I check to see if my financial aid has been processed? Login to the Student Portal and click on My North Central. Then, click on the Students tab. From the choices along the left side of the page, choose My Financial Aid. On this page you can check your awards, track documents, and view an award guide. Can I use my financial aid for expenses other than my North Central tuition and fees? Award and loan money will be applied to North Central tuition and fees first. If any monies are remaining, a refund check or debit card will be issued approximately 5-6 weeks after the NCMC semester begins. If you have a Pell Grant, textbooks may be charged against your financial aid through the North Central bookstore. Where do I get my textbooks? Textbooks will be available online for the North Central online classes you take, go to College Store at For the classes in California, more information will be available at the time of registration.

Can my parents/guardians call and ask questions about my financial aid, class schedule, account balance, etc? The Family Education Right to Privacy Act (FERPA) limits what information North Central can share with individuals other than the student. In order to release information to your parents, North Central requires an Authorization of Non-Directory Information Disclosure form on file. Please fill out the disclosure and fax to Renee DeYoung at Be sure to list each individual and sign the bottom. The form allows for two individuals to be listed. If you want to permit more than two people, please attach a second disclosure form. Further questions? Please contact: Mike Krauss Dean of Administrative Services The Young Americans College of the Performing Arts mkrauss@youngamericans.org Paula Welmers, Ed.D., LPC Counselor North Central Michigan College pwelmers@ncmich.edu
